BS: What do you think will happen in Israel?

21 Jun 02 - 02:04 AM (#734101)
Subject: what do you think will happen in Isreal
From: tremodt

I am beginning to think that the Palistine will win the conflict through terrorist activities

Sharon cant stop them no matter what he does

This is what happened in Northern Ireland Brits never thought they would have to deal with the IRA, or Sinn Fein

Thatcher thought she would beat the IRA but she did not

What do you think

ron

Has anyone seen Humphrey the Rabbit lately? He's a very nice rabbit with brown furry ears and I haven't seen him for days.

Why do I get the feeling that Ron is tring to start an argument here? Lets just ignore this thread, or talk about bunny rabbits instead.

Quite right. I like bunny rabbits. Has anyone heard from Humphrey?

I think the lizards are actually more of a lime green, rather than turquoise....and they sort of shimmer

Rich and Bagpuss, the thing is in this case that the originator of this thread only starts political threads, basically asking the same question(s) repeatedly and causing the same arguments to be rehashed and entrenched positions to be restated ad nauseam.

Some of us have got rather fed up, that's all.

And have you ever had a ray smile at you? They're just as sweet as bunnies, though not as furry...

So, essentially, only people who post music related articles are allowed to start political threads?
Or more distressing, only political threads that meet some unstated criteria?
I don't like these restrictions.
Here's what a search of the database using the word "Israel" revealed. Lots of political discussion here!

Rich, did you read my full sentence, or stop at the first comma? My point is that these political threads (are)basically asking the same question(s) repeatedly and causing the same arguments to be rehashed and entrenched positions to be restated ad nauseam

If you want to debate the subject with RO1SIN I'm not stopping you, and I would have ignored this thread as I do the others.

I do find it difficult to understand however, why someone would hang around this (largely) musical place but not take advantage of the music, preferring to wind people up on political topics totally unrelated to the music. (Clicking on the author's name above his initial post will bring up all his postings- you decide.)

Right, I'm off to get ready for Alcester Folk Festival. :0)

I love, love, LOVE folk music, and I'm interested in Israel, but I don't have time for another thread about it right now. I posted on the subject yesterday in the "Who are the terrorists" thread, and that wore me out and used up all my free time. (The list of threads above doesn't include that set of threads, with "terrorists" in the title, which are almost entirely about the middle east.)

Halló all, maybe two things have to be done, first " a war " witch is not a good thing to do, and number two Arafat goes away from the steering wheel and they get someone else to do the jop. But remember there are groups that are boming in Isreal and they must been stopped, if not then we are gonna see a long road of trouble and it´s been a long enough. Anyway what do I know about this , I just wish that this people can get some peace very soon. I thank god what we are lucky to do not have these proplems around us here In Iceland. We have it damm good still we complain about everything around us. I hope that the Palistin and the Isreal people will live in peace. All the best from the north Atlandic , Skarpi Iceland.

The following was forwarded to me, I haven't corrected any of the spelling nor the punctuation, nor the factual details, which could all use a little editing. But it's on the subject of the thread, and currently making the email rounds. I wouldn't bet the rent against Israel (from here on this is by someone else, not me, I'm just the one posting this). *************************************

I thought this was a great perspective from a friend's cousin who lives in Israel..........read on and smile!

I am not the least afraid to go any place, by bus or to a mall. I didn't change or stop doing ANYthing I used to do before this mess began. People tend to forget that twice the casualties from terror get killed on the roads! More people still die from heart attack, cancer, and other things; they just don't show them on TV.

Don't misunderstand me, there is a war going on, it's not pleasant, but lets face it.. WE HAVE NEVER BEEN BETTER!!!! It's only TV and media that make people think it's the end of the world coming. Only 60 years ago!! They were leading Jews to their death like sheep to the slaughter! No country, no army. 55 years ago!! Seven Arab countries declared war on the small Jewish state, only a few hours old!! We were then 650,000 Jews! Against the rest of the Arab world! No IDF, no mighty air force, just tough people with nowhere to go (Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, attacked all at once).

The country the U.N. "gave us" was 65 % desert. The country started from scratch! 35 years ago!! We fought the three strongest armies in the Middle East, and wiped them out in six days. We fought against different coalitions of Arab countries, with modern armies, and masses of Russian soviet weapons, and still won!!!

We have today a country, and an army, and a strong air force, and hi-tech economy, exporting millions, Intel-Microsoft-IBM develop their stuff here, our doctors win world prizes for medical developments, we made the desert flourish, selling oranges and vegetables to the world.

Israel has sent its own satellite!! In space (three satellites all together!!), we sit proudly with the U.S. (250 million people), Russia (200 million people!), China (1.1 billion), the Europeans --France-England-Germany (350 million), as the only countries in the world to shoot something into space!!

Israel is today in the world nuclear power family with U.S, Russia, China, India, France, and England. (We don't admit it, but everyone knows...) To think that only 60 years ago, we were led, shameful, with no hope, to our death!!

We crawled out of the burning ashes of Europe, we won our wars here with less than nothing in our hands, we built an "empire" out of nothing. Who the hell is Mr. Arafat to make me scared? Terrified? You make me laugh!

Passover was last month, let's not forget what the story is all about. We overcame Pharoah, we overcame the Greeks, the Romans, the inquisition in Spain, we overcame the pogroms in Russia, we overcame Hitler, the Germans, the Holocaust, we overcame seven other Arab countries at once, we overcame Saddam. Take it easy, folks, we will overcome these ones too.

No matter at what part of human history you try to think of, for us, the Jewish people, our situation has never been better!!! So let's lift our heads high, and remember: any nation or culture that tried to mess around with us was destroyed to the ground - while we kept going!!! Egypt? Anyone know where their empire disappeared to? The Greeks? Alexander of Macedonia? The Romans? Anyone today speak Latin? The Third Reich? Anyone heard any news about it lately?

And look at us, the nation from the Bible, from slavery in Egypt we are still here, speaking the same language!! Right here, right now.

The Arabs don't know it yet, but they will learn there is one God. As long as we keep our identity, we are eternal.

So, sorry for not worrying, bitching, crying, or being scared, things are going o.k. here. They surely can go better, but still, don't fall for the media junk, they won't tell you that there are festivals going on, people keep on living, going out, seeing friends. Yes, our morale is low, so what? It's only because we weep for our dead while they enjoy the blood (and this is the same reason why, we will win, after all).

You can forward this e-mail (if you choose) to the whole of the Jewish community in the United States, and the world. They are part of our strength and it might help some of them to keep their head up high. Tell them there is nothing to worry about. Tell them to think BIG and to see the whole picture.

"See you next year in Jerusalem."

If you click on the name at the top of a post (after From:) you get to see the previous posts made by the person posting; and sometimes a quick shifty through the posts adds up to a good reason to talk about bunny rabbits instead.

(Of course it only works with people who use a name, GUESTs or members. Click on naked GUEST and the back posts still come up, but it's pretty pointless.)

The British havent tried to defeat the IRA. They have been trying to keep the peace between two sides in an Irish civil war. If they were trying to defeat them we would invade Ireland, and that would not be the will of the British people or our Gov.

I think one thing we can do is to lobby for the safety of everyone, and insist on security but also on fair treatment. Another thing we can do is to be watchful for statements that are triggers. The statement about oranges in a post above is a trigger. The Palestinians grew oranges; they were world famous. They exported them. They did not need other people to tell them how to grow oranges. They have lost their orange groves along with their olive orchards. They still grieve for these orchards. Their grandchildren who have never seen them still dream of them. They aren't going to get them back, except perhaps in token amounts, or in some sort of historical preserve, but we can still understand their grief. Can't we?? I'm Irish...people never forget land that they have loved. I personally know and worked for someone this happened to (back to the oranges). If we can be watchful of things like this that sound ok on the surface, but really are insulting, we can move forward a bit. I know this was not intentional; it is looking at something through our own lenses...mg

How can you be "Irish" if you were both born in and live in the US? My great grandmother was Irish (born in Cork) but after she came here she insisted that she was American.

By law, you are American since you were born here unless I am missing something. Please do tell.

22 Jun 02 - 09:30 AM (#734701)
Subject: BS: Who's "Irish"?
From: Celtic Soul

Butch...

The definition is simply different for most here in the States. The US does not have one national identity. One of the greatest things about the US is the fact that it is the world in miniature. Cultures of origin thrive here, and without as much divisiveness as you find in some other places (though, admittedly, it does exist).

I work in a business that is highly multi-cultural. We all celebrate one anothers culture of origin. Their are 3rd and 4th generation Hispanics and those who only just became citizens. We have Asians of many different countries, some having immigrated here, and some who's parents or Grandparents did. None of us has divorced ourselves completely from the lands that birthed us (or our Grandparents).

We all have a few things in common. A love for this country, *and* a love for our ethnic origins.

I am Scots-Irish/American, and proud of it. This makes me something very different than someone born in, and living in Ireland, but it also makes me something very different than someone born here in the USA of Italian descent, Mexican descent, Viet Namese descent, etc.

Ones culture does not somehow disappear when one moves to a new land. In fact, ones culture does not get bred out even after many generations.

It is excessively cumbersome to say that I am German-English-Irish-French-Etc., especially since one part has been in the US since at least the 1750s and others didn't come until the 1890s. "American" is an adequate appellation.

The important distinction, Art, is that is OK for you. For many of us who were raised in an environment steeped in the cultures of origin, it is very important to us to retain our cultural identity.

Well said, Mick, and I second it.

Art, I'd say that it *is* simply a matter of choice here in the USA. Which is another great thing about living here. I get to have that choice, and I can respect your choice not to as well. That, I think, is the very spirit of a multi-cultural nation.

Oh, and to bring this around to the subject of music, my cultural origins have had a great impact on the music I perform. I used to sing Russian Gypsy music. It just *felt* wrong, though it was beautiful, and I loved it. What felt wrong for me was that I did not culturally connect with it. I didn't have any history with it. I much prefer singing music of the British Isles. This may make me a "Plastic Paddy", but hey...it's what I feel genuinely connected to.

We break for a newsflash from WSSBS:

*** Humphrey the Rabbit has been spotted near Bolsover, Ontario, in the company of one of those silly Osama Bin-lookalikes. They were canoeing down the Trent Canal together.

If anyone has forgotten, Al-Queda released thousands and thousands of Osama Bin-lookalike androids last year in order to make the search for the real Osama difficult, if not impossible. They appear to have succeeded in that aim.

Osama Bin-lookalikes look exactly like Osama Bin-Laden. They hang around donut shops and other public places, and make rude jokes about George Bush. There have been so many of them hereabouts that everyone just ignores them now. Fortunately their batteries are mostly running down now, and you may find one frozen in its final position. If so, cart it away to the junkyard, please.

It's so tedious...

But the appearance of Humphrey! Now, that's exciting! Stay tuned for further details. This has been a WSSBS on-the-spot newsflash, from Leslie Fernwinkel, small but vital reporter. ***

Carol, I am very sorry to report that the famous Rombos' McGill with the mysterious figure in the door which was mounted on the wall at the back of Rombos' Restaurant in beautiful downtown Orilla (the jewel of Ontario) has....DISAPPEARED!!!

Yes. It's gone. Completely vanished. I discovered this myself just a few days ago.

I have no explanation for why or how this could have happened. IS NOTHING SACRED???

I think it would be timely for you to post a link to what may be one of the only remaining photos of this architectural masterpiece.

No further reports yet on Humphrey the Rabbit, I'm afraid.

It's a good thing we got the pictures, eh!

Can't post a link yet. PhotoLoft has folded and it's taken all of my beautiful links with it. All of the links I've posted thus far are dead. Dead links. Dammit.

However, as we speak, I am just now working on building myself a website at Lycos. It's pretty sweaty work, and I don't know how long it will take, but when I'm done, I hope to be able to post some new links.

Wish me luck...

P.S. See what I mean? Orillia, Ontario, center of the known universe, is flying apart at an shocking speed, hurling bits and pieces of its most precious stuff far an wide into the vast reaches of the unknown! Where will it all end!? *sob*

to answer your question, I think there will be a series of terrible terrorist activities and retaliation. I think the world will step in, declare a very conditional, very supervised Palestinian state, with pretty good international consensus about what needs to happen for the security of Israel and the conduct of the Palestinians. The thugs in Palestine will be demoted and the rest of the population will understand that this is their best and only hope and there is no alternative, much as they would wish it. There will be U.N. troops at checkpoints under strict standards of behavior and they will not degrade and humiliate the Palestinians, who will essentially have to live under martial law for some time but that is probably the best we can do. I would still like to see some continuity between a seaport and the West Bank in exchange for Gaza but I don't know enough to know how i t could be done. Vast immigration out of the Palestinian refugee camps must go on to all of the Arab and free world and Israel will have to curtail its invitations to millions of new settlers to come on down, under threat of cutoff of U.S. aid.

That is what I predict and it is a far prettier scenario that some of the alternatives. mg

The brits thought that They the brits would bring the IRA and sinn fein to their knees

The only way out for Sharon is for HIM to decide to give Palestine statehood becaus he will find out that it is impossible to completely stop the palestines in thjeir terror war

This is only an observation by myself

I do not agree with terrorisim by any one but I think what I am saying is just logic I hate no man isrealis, palestine Irish or British I do not want to argue

I am an Irish bunny, even though I was born an English Gnome, and I resent the fact that everyone thinks that I don't have feelings! The Brits never thought they would be able to cook me but they did. And very nice I tasted as well. I'm not sure if Palestinian Bunnies would be that tasty unless they were Kosher.

I don't know how far it is to San Jose but from Ushant to Scily is 35 leagues.

And no-one is arguing with you Roswell - just taking the piss...;-)

Your logic is good, R01SIN. One cannot indefinitely stop an oppressed people from retaliating against that oppression by merely increasing the level of violence of that oppression...unless, of course, one simply kills ALL of them. I foresee that it will not be possible for Israel to kill all the Palestinians. Nor will it be possible for the Palestinians to kill all the Israelis. An eventual settlement agreed upon by both is thus fairly logical...once they have exhausted ALL other possibilities, of course.

It is typical of human beings to try every stupid solution possible to end a conflict before trying the one sensible solution...a compromise based on mutual respect and goodwill.

Alanbit - If you check the Ontario map, you will find the tiny community of Bolsover, about halfway between Orillia and Lindsay. Bolsover has an entire division road devoted to its existence, with a sign saying "Bolsover". I went out there to have a look at the place, expecting to find a town. I found almost nothing. There are a few houses (maybe 5 or 6), a marina (I think), and that's about it. No post office, no school, no general store, no traffic light, nothing. Some town! I think the brief sighting of Humphrey the Rabbit is in fact the only thing that has ever distinguised Bolsover from an anthill, and I think that the division road sign should be changed to say "Nowhere". We will try to intercept Humphrey at some more northerly point on the Trent Canal...

Gee Little Hawk. Humphrey has made it to Canada! Why, the only Bolsover I had ever heard of before was a mining village near Chesterfield. But I'm worried about Humphrey, because I have been hearing rumours that he was spotted pursuing a cute little Canadian doe down a hole. I am sure that all God fearing Mudcatters will join me in praying that his virtue remains unblemished.

You guys certainly are weird with your bunny nonsense.

Basically Sharon should build the wall and shoot every Arab that comes near it because they have no reason to enter Israel.

These terrorists have no desire to make any kind of peace and the IDF should just go after them. Its the pansies and anti-semites in the State Department which blackmail Israel into meeting with Arafat, the terrorist in chief of the PA.

Wasn't Denis Skinner the beast of Bolsover? Weird coincidence or what? A skinner being mentioned in the same breath as bunnies! Perhaps that's why he was referred to as the beast.

And why should Sharon shoot all the Arabs? Why not let Tracy have a go? I don't thing that there are too many Arabs in Essex anyway...

Hey, come on, Louis! It is asking way too much of Ariel Sharon to expect him to shoot all the Arabs that come near the wall. He is ruthless and effective when it comes to mayhem, no doubt, but he's just one man! One man cannot possibly shoot ALL the Arabs that come near that wall. Even hundreds of heavily armed guards with machine guns could not succeed in killing ALL the people who came near the Berlin Wall. It is extremely unfair to burden Mr. Sharon with such a responsibility.

Furthermore, there are a lot of Arabs and Palestinians legally inside the wall too, I believe, in Israel on a daily basis! Must Sharon also kill them? Give the poor fellow a break, he has a nation to run.

No. It's just too big a job for Ariel Sharon. So, where is Rambo when we need him? Or...maybe we could clone Joe Stalin or Adolf Hitler to do the job. Yeah. Now there were 2 guys who knew how to get the job done when you're talkin' genocide! You follow me, Louis?

My take on things are essentially optimistic. In the short run there will be a two state solution, something that should have happened long ago under the November 1947 UN Partition Plan. There will still be some really tricky sore points -- Israeli settlements in Palestinian territory, the division or nondivision of Jerusalem, and the nasty and violent rejectionists -- but by and large a two state solution will work. Don't expect the Israelis and the Palestinians to be buddy-buddies, but don't be too surprised if you start to see cooperation, especially economic cooperation, between the two peoples if it is to their mutual benefit.

In the long run the recent turn towards religion throughout the world will ebb, provided we see the spread economic development, universal education, and democratic instiutions. When that happens all this now-deadly nonesense about Jew, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, etc., will something to laugh about as we share and enjoy the holidays and customs of each others' ancestors and of our own.

Otherwise we are f---ed big time! And by "we" I do mean all of us.

It is what needs to be done...the situation has gone on so long that the rest of the world has to come in and set limits..like auditing the funds..like saying Arafat and the terrorist thugs and the leachers must go and must not represent the Palestinian people..that there are things we won't allow...and that improvements to everyone's lives can come fairly rapidly...I think it is quite hopeful.
