21 Jun 02 - 06:57 AM (#734194) Subject: Anyone been to Croatia? From: GUEST,Bagpuss We are going to Croatia for a couple of weeks this summer, and are having a hard job sorting out our itinerary. There are just too many places and islands we would like to go to and not enough time. Has anyone been, and if so do you have any "must see" places that we really shouldn't miss out? So far we have decided we must see Dubrovnik, and the Plitvice Lakes national park and are thinking about Vis, to see the Blue caves. Probably going to do a week or so island hopping by ferry and then hiring a car for the rest of the time. Bagpuss |

From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull It looks like almost all the UK catters haved lived in Hull at some point in their lives, I wonder why this is! I take it you were at The University of Lincolnshire & Humberside, or whatever it is called today, it seems to change it's name at least once a year! |
21 Jun 02 - 07:50 AM (#734225) Subject: RE: BS: Anyone been to Croatia? 21 Jun 02 - 07:54 AM (#734227) Subject: RE: BS: Anyone been to Croatia? From: GUEST,Bagpuss Talking of name pages (in an effort to keep this thread at the top until someone who has been to croatia sees it) - did you know that before Newcastle Poly changed to University of Northumbria is was going to be called City University of Newcastle upon Tyne. They even had stationary printed up before someone pointed out why this would not be a suitable name.... |

21 Jun 02 - 08:00 AM (#734232) Subject: RE: BS: Anyone been to Croatia? From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Well at least the beers cheap! I've spent many a night in the Chico Mendes Bar & the John McCarthy bar, (IPA at £1 a pint!) What did you study at L & H? It wasn't Applied Social Sciences was it? |
21 Jun 02 - 08:02 AM (#734233) Subject: RE: BS: Anyone been to Croatia? From: Noreen (I've never lived in Hull, though my ex-husband was born there....) Not a lot about Croatia I'm afraid, KT. I believe Dubrovnik used to be very beautiful, but got knocked about a bit. It will be a fascinating trip. Tell us all about it! Noreen |

From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull More name stuff - there is no such place as Huberside (Hull is in East Yorkshire) but we have a BBC Radio Humberside, Humberside Police And Humberside Fire Brigade , The local Ambulance service is called TENYAS (Tees, East and North Yorks Ambulance Service). |
21 Jun 02 - 08:15 AM (#734238) Subject: RE: BS: Anyone been to Croatia? From: GUEST,Bagpuss John, I worked as a research assistant in Psychology. Noreen, from what I have read, Dubrovnik has been rebuilt to its former glory. It's one place thats definitely on my list. |
21 Jun 02 - 08:46 AM (#734245) Subject: RE: BS: Anyone been to Croatia? From: Snuffy I have actually been to Croatia. We spent a couple of weeks up & down the Dalmatian coast, with a brief journey inland (to the lakes, I think). Didn't get as far as Dubrovnik, but Split was quite impressive. But as this was back in '68, I don't think much of it would be relevant now! Hope you enjoy it. WassaiL! V |

You've got the start of a good parody there! Bagpuss, would love to hear about your trip when you get back! |

21 Jun 02 - 06:48 PM (#734460) Subject: RE: BS: Anyone been to Croatia? From: michaelr I've been there a couple of times. The Adriatic coast is gorgeous; coastal towns to see: Split, Rijeka, Senj, Dubrovnik (they've patched it up pretty well, I hear). There's an island off the coast called Korcula, where you can see Marco Polo's house. Montenegro is incredible! Plitvice Lakes (actually in Slovenia, I believe) are magical. A lot of the hinterland is very beautiful and wild, and other parts are parched and drab. Have a great trip! Cheers, Michael |
21 Jun 02 - 06:54 PM (#734463) Subject: RE: BS: Anyone been to Croatia? From: michaelr A word of caution: The Balkans are volatile due to cebturies-old sociopolitical and ethnoreligious resentments, as well as a prevailing dark, brooding temperament, combined with a weird, bloody-minded machismo. Be cautious, and don't take sides in political discussions! An excellent novel to read: "Montenegro" by Starling Lawrence (Berkley Books, 1998). |

21 Jun 02 - 07:26 PM (#734488) Subject: RE: BS: Anyone been to Croatia? From: john c I went camping there a couple of years ago and it was fabulous. I was on the island Cres and stayed on the campsite at a place called Valun. A beautiful campsite, right on the beach. The village itself is virtually traffic free (there´s a bus there once a week!) and has one tiny shop and 3 superb restaurants. Especially great if you like seafood. Highly recommended!! J. |
21 Jun 02 - 07:37 PM (#734495) Subject: RE: BS: Anyone been to Croatia? From: GUEST Croatia had more avid Nazis per square foot than Berlin had (or has). The Eastern Church in Croatia smuggled more Nazis to South America at the end of WW II, than Freddy Lakes' airline could ever carry. Ask about the Oustershoup (spelling?)...their version of the Iron Guard (Roumania), Brown Shirts etc. Why anyone would want to go to that f*****g place is beyond me. Larry Parish |

21 Jun 02 - 07:58 PM (#734506) Subject: RE: BS: Anyone been to Croatia? From: artbrooks Herself and I were in Croatia quite a while ago-1972. We hitched down the Dalmation coast and spent a couple of days in an old hotel in Dubrovnik. The most memorable part of the trip (apart from the ride in the back of the beer truck...yum!) was that they were in the middle of a smallpox scare and we had to show our vaccinations to get a room anywhere. As has been said, I don't think our experience is particularly relevant to today, but I remember the views down into the water from the side of the coast road as being very spectacular. |
