I think, from memory, that the final alternative chorus may have been written by Nerys Evans, Ted's lovely wife ... This song never fails to move me to tears - either hearing it or trying to sing it ... Also, being an ex-diver (hobby), one can have a slight understanding of what kind of a death it was to die. The memory of the Diver's Cemetery in Broome lingers a long time too ... Just one of many fine songs from the pen and heart of Ted Egan. RJB |

He sang the song, and had Nerys planted in the audience to sing the chorus in Japanese at the end. Tremendously effective. Come to think of it, it's a shame Nerys doesn't sing more. |

Since then it has been a favorite of mine. But now I know who was singing it. There is a Ted Egan site somewhere - but I have it bookmarked at home, not on this work machine. I did post it a year or two back, in a thread about Ted's efforts to get a film made based on his song The Drover's Boy. You could do a 1- or 2-year search for "Drover's Boy" (OK ... so could I!). If you are after songs of Harry Robertson, this recent thread covers the territory: Harry Robertson Song Book (click) I have Harry's original LP and the accompanying songbook (and the new CD) ... as well as a few other songs of his, occasionally published in Australian folklore journals: (possibly) Singabout, Tradition or Stringybark & Greenhide. The current champions of Harry's work are Lyn and Evan Mathieson who pushed the CD through the National Library and are trying to get more onto another CD. Ted has always be very scrupulous in his content and dealings with different cultures in song - and often consults with local representatives of the people of whom he sings. This song would have been used in his Faces of Australia series of recordings and accompanying books, but I do not have a complete collection. Regards, Bob Bolton |
