Alcester festival - Sunday concert

Hello. I'm new to Mud Cat so I'm not sure quite how this works yet, but I wanted to say how much I enjoyed Alcester this year, and to ask if anyone was at the Sunday night concert (last weekend) and heard The Wilsons (I think that's who they were - five men singing beautiful harmonies?). I want to know what their last song was called, and if anyone knows where it comes from and/or what it's about? It's been haunting me ever since! Cheers!! (-:

p.s. the chorus went something like 'shut the coal house door boys, there's bones/blood/bairns inside' Brrr..

They were the Wilsons, and the song was Alex Glasgow's Close The Coal-house Door, and you'll find the lyrics and other information on the song in the thread: Close The Coalhouse Door

The first time that I ever heard "Close the Coalhouse Door" it was being sung by the Wilsons - and that was at Keele Folk Festival in about 1966 !

Thankyou!! It's a fantastic song. If a little chilling!

I KNEW there were more Mudcats around at Alcester! You never signed the Mudcat sheet - or have you literally just joined? If so welcome to the 'Cat.

I first heard the song as part of a very moving theatrical production about mining in the 70's at Leeds Playhouse. I'd love the chance to see it again.

Is anyone else out there old enough to remember the superb steam radio programme 'The Northern Drift' I'm sure I remember hearing Alex Glasgow perform the song after the Aberfan disaster - despite time it has not lost the ability to be moving! - a fitting tribute

As you're new, Little Spiky, welcome and thrice welcome.I'm very new here, it's a bit bewildering but fun. There are some funny people, but if you avoid the subjects of Nic Jones, Israel or the origin of Irish songs you'll get on fine. Have fun!

Cheers! I have literally just joined, which is why I didn't sign the Mudcat sheet at Alcester. I'm already having fun though, I'm so impressed at how well this thing works! Tanfastic!!

You used to be able to get Tanfastic in chemists back in the 60's to give you an instant tan without going in the sun.

Usually ended up with orange stripes!

Welcome to the Madhouse Mudcat.

WassaiL! V (who had such a good time at Alcester that he never got round to going to a concert or signing the Mudcat sheet)

Sadly I missed the sunday night concert, but Alcester was indeed very good this year - the new venue down at the fire station has a certain something.
