I know of 2 people who know there were words written to this patriotic march- but I can't find them. Can you help? Thanks.

As noted on this page about American Patrol, the 1942 movie "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" featured a song called "We Must Be Vigilant", with lyrics by Joe Burke to the tune of "American Patrol". I wasn't able to find the lyrics on a quick search, but maybe that will help point you in the right direction.

Aloha,
Mark

You might try Interlibrary Loan, as the page Mark linked to suggests, or if that fails, try emailing the librarians at Georgia Southern and ask if they know which library "Julie Sikes, Archival Associate I" had identified as possessing a copy. Even if the library that has it won't let you borrow it, they may be willing for a nominal charge to make a photocopy of it for you. The movie is not one of World War II's greater movies. The IMDb page is pitiful in its paucity. The movie is a musical, but IMDb doesn't credit Meacham, and refers to both Edgar Leslie and Joseph Burke as "Composers"...

There's another set of lyrics to this music that appeared in a grade-school songbook used around 1958. The specifics are lost in the mists of my rapidly-failing memory, but I think it described the sounds produced by various instrumnets in a marching band.

Thank you ALL, who responded to my request. You are very kind. I spent hours last fall trying to find the lyrics for an elderly friend- who asked me to find the words for her on my computer. It would be a wonderful 4th of July gift to her if I could print out the words. Thank you for the leads. Debbe

Thank you ALL who responded to my request. I spent HOURS last fall trying to find the words, after a dear older friend asked me to find them on my computer after 9/11. She thinks I can find ANYthing. And so far I have failed. Your leads helped -and I thank you for your kindness. Please email me if you find them. I would love to give them to her for the 4th of July as a surprise. THX

I listened to the Chico Marx and His Orchestra version (rec. New York, March 1942) on the above CD (VJC-1036). It begins: "We must be vigilant, we must be vigilant, American patrol / With arms for the army, ships for the navy ...", but, sorry, I couldn't transcribe the lyrics (one verse). The note given is:
WE MUST BE VIGILANT (AMERICAN PATROL) (3:49)
(Edgar Leslie & Joe Burke, 1942; adapted from "American Patrol"; E.H. Meacham, 1891; featured by Phil Spitalny's All Girl Orchestra; instrumental version by Glenn Miller)

The lyrics may be longer. From Kathleen E.R. Smith, God Bless America: Tin Pan Alley Goes to War (University Press of Kentucky, 2002, p. 22).

WE MUST BE VIGILANT

We must be vigilant!
We must be vigilant!
American Patrol
With arms for the army, ships for the navy,
Let this be our goal.
We must be diligent!
We must be diligent!
American Patrol.

I guess there hasn't been a post here in 6 years, so no one is likely to read this, but I have seen lyrics to American Patrol before. They were on a reel of music on a player piano in my Aunt's cottage up in God's Country.

They started something like this:

The crowds are cheering, hear the welcome greeting,
as the boys come marching down the street.
They're back from the fray, they've won the day,
their victory is complete.
All that cheering as the boys are nearing,
fills their hearts with patriotic pride.
When put to the test they did they're best,
their praise cannot be denied....

If anyone is still interested, I can probably rememeber another verse or two. The lyrics I remember seem like WWI era, so they can't be original.

Dear Jeff,
Are you going from memory?
I was interested in finding the musical score, if possible. Any leads?

We must be vigilant
We must be diligent
American Patrol!
With Arms for the Army
Ships for the Navy,
Let this be our goal -
We must be vigilant
We must be diligent
American Patrol!
Protect our shoreline
To the door line of every native soul.
Behind this cause we must keep rallying -
Let there be no shilly-shallying
and let there be no Dilly-dallying.
American Patrol!

Great tune! Reminds me of my Old Man. He could really whistle this. Seems like great whistling ended with that generation.

As a 12 year old in the forties we sang something like this

We must be vigilant,
We must be vigilant,
Americans at war.
Cheers for the Army
Cheers for the Navy
Cheers for our Air Corps

then we kept on repeating it

It is great to see the history and real words.
Thanks, y'all.

Here's what I hear on the recording by Chico Marx and His Orchestra. It's just a little more than what has been posted above.

WE MUST BE VIGILANT (AMERICAN PATROL) (3:49)
(Edgar Leslie & Joe Burke, 1942; adapted from "American Patrol"; E.H. Meacham, 1891

We must be vigilant
We must be vigilant
American Patrol!
With arms for the Army
Ships for the Navy,
Let this be our goal -
We must be diligent
We must be diligent
American Patrol!
Protect our shoreline
To the door line of every native soul.

We need this solidarity,
Or else divided we will fall;
It means the popularity
Of peace and happiness for all.

Behind this cause we must keep rallying -
Let there be no dilly-dallying
Keep us free from shilly-shallying,
Hark to freedom's call.
On the land...
In the air...
On the sea...
Everywhere!
American Patrol!

This is what I have on my version of Tribute to America CD: Disk 2

WE MUST BE VIGILANT (AMERICAN PATROL) (2:51)
(Edgar Leslie & Joe Burke, 1942; adapted from "American Patrol"; E.H. Meacham, 1891; featured by Phil Spitalny's Hour of Charm All Girl Orchestra; instrumental version by Glenn Miller)

We must be vigilant,
We must be vigilant,
American Patrol!
With arms for the Army,
Ships for the Navy,
Let this be our goal;
We must be diligent,
We must be diligent,
American Patrol!
Protect our shoreline
To the door line
Of every native soul.

We need this solidarity,
Or else divided we will fall;
It means the popularity
Of peace and happiness for all.

Behind this cause we must keep rallying–
Let there be no dilly-dallying–
Keep us free from shilly-shallying,
Hark to freedom's call.

On the land... (We’ll keep the army there!)
In the air... (Here come our planes up there!)
On the sea... (We’ll keep the ocean free!)
We’ll be free (Everywhere!)
Let’s be free (We’ll be there!)

Oooooooooo

O Lord let this be
Our humble prayer to Thee:
Preserve our liberty;
Keep us by Thy might
To conquer for the right
Of all men to be free.
Since first our fathers died
For home and fireside
Our Refuge Thou hast been;
O keep us ever
Brave and strong that
Victory we may win.

Can’t you hear the bugle blowing, calling one and all?
Every mother’s son is coming, anwering the call!

So let’s be vigiliant
We must be vigilant
American Patrol!
With arms for the Army
Ships for the Navy,
Let this be our goal -
We must be diligent
We must be diligent
American Patrol!
Protect our shoreline
To the door line of every native soul.

We need this solidarity,
Or else divided we will fall;
It means the popularity
Of peace and happiness for all.

Behind this cause we must keep rallying -
Let there be no dilly-dallying -
Keep us free from shilly-shallying,
And we’ll reach our goal!

Let’s be viligant,
We must be diligent,
American Patrol!
We will make ‘em hop
And we will never stop
Until we reach our goal!
Let’s keep them rolling by,
Let’s keep them flying high –
The American Patrol!

Hmmm....I had the same question as GUEST,debbe27@aol.com... but I was thinking the 'song' was much more carefree...something about 'waddle like a duck' and 'lost my money at the track....know I'll never get it back' and 'my luck can get no meanier .... gotta go where the grass is greenier; that's where I want to be'

Does that (vague as it is) ring any bells for anyone?
