01 Jul 02 - 08:01 PM (#740393) Subject: RE: BS: Three Shockers in the News From: Helen I see your bid of 3 stories plus one and raise you this one: http://www.abc.net.au/news/justin/nat/newsnat-2jul2002-5.htm Posted: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 1:11 AEST Gang-rape of teenager ordered as punishment for brother's sins A teenage girl was gang-raped in central Pakistan last month as "punishment" meted out by a tribal jury for her brother's alleged affair with a woman of a higher tribe, police said. A Panchayat, or tribal jury, ordered four men, including one of the jurists, to rape the 18-year-old girl on June 22 in the village of Meerwala. Meerwala lies 610 kilometres south-west of the capital Islamabad. District police chief Malik Saeed Awan said authorities were informed of the publicly-ordered gang-rape several days after the incident. He said four men took turns to sexually assault the girl inside a room. She was then ordered to return home naked before 1,000 onlookers. The rape was to avenge the "insult" caused to a family of the Mastoi tribe by the girl's brother's alleged "illicit affair" with a woman of a higher social standing. The girl and her brother were from the lower Gujjar tribe. The Panchayat had threatened that all women in the accused's family would be raped unless the 18-year-old submitted herself to the public gang rape. Awan said police were taking action against members of the Panchayat. Lawyers visiting the tribal area on Sunday urged the authorities to prosecute the rapists and the jury. |

02 Jul 02 - 12:06 AM (#740510) Subject: RE: BS: Three Shockers in the News From: GUEST,mg The woman killing her children and the rape is something that is everyone in the world's business and we should take whatever legal and political action we are capable of on things where people are killed or hurt. I don't think we can dictate to people what they should and shouldn't eat...we can let them know that many people are appalled at this, we can boycott etc..we can insist on humane treatment of the animals...but unless we want Hindus saying we can't eat cows and Muslims and Jews saying we shouldn't eat pork and old-fashioned Catholics, sort of like me, saying we shouldn't eat any of them on Friday, and vegetarians saying we should eat them period..this is a cultural thing that we will just have to let offend us and realize that some of our foods and habits offend others. As for the car salesman, I wish America would give him the right to do that, as I wish they could give athiests the right to charge more for people they disagree with and let people shop around for the best price for their belief system. But I predict he won't be allowed to do that. We have to pick our battles and I don't see these events as any where near equivalent to each other. mg |

02 Jul 02 - 12:31 AM (#740515) Subject: RE: BS: Three Shockers in the News From: Helen Mickey191, I'm hoping that the teenage sister does a bit of homework on the Lorena Bobbitt do-it-yourself method and then has a practice session on her brother. Well, at the very least, she should try it out with a rusty knife, preferably saw toothed, on the jury. After a bit of practice she may be able to do it more humanely (???) on her brother. (wicked grin) I'm too gobsmacked by that news article to even try to go into the complexities of it all. It opens a panorama of ethical, social and moral issues for me. And then there is the story in this week's New Scientist about wives in India being horribly burnt, often fatally, so that the husband can keep the dowry. And it's happening to about 25,000 women per year, and the husbands are getting away with it. Does it never end? Helen |

02 Jul 02 - 04:15 PM (#740908) Subject: RE: BS: Three Shockers in the News From: Little Hawk Bad things happen every day in the world. So do good ones. Which does the news media tell you about? And why? Money. Sponsors. Market share. That's why. Today was a beautiful day here, everything went great, and most of the people I know were content to live and let live. Well, gee, who's gonna tune in for that? As for that used car salesmen...LOL! What is going to prevent the local atheists from just buying a car from someone else? As if they would buy it from him... Anyway, he's on the wrong track. If he really means what he's saying, he should offer religious people a $10,000 discount! Man, you'd see a lot of so-called atheists "getting religion" all of a sudden... :-) Just long enough to buy the car. Money rules. Want to prove it? Offer people a choice between God...and all the money they can carry away. See what they do. A casino pulls in fifty thousand people in the time it takes a church to pull in 50. So who or what is the god of choice out there these days? - LH |

03 Jul 02 - 02:12 PM (#741612) Subject: RE: BS: Three Shockers in the News From: Coyote Breath Besides, some members of the Lewis and Clark, Corps of Discovery reported that they found dog quite tasty and a welcome change from bison. The woman getting her hair done... probably just a case of being dumb about basic physics and the passage of time. The "punishment" in Pakistan? How very horrible (as is the burning of wives for their doweries) I can't grasp the "logic" of a culture that accepts that sort of thing. The accidental bombing of wedding party? Ghastly, and inexcuseable. But Little Hawk is absolutely correct in his assesment of the presentation of these stories. If it bleeds, it leads. Money IS the true motivation for the presenting of this kind of news. With the exception of the news from Pakistan and the acts of burning wives in India, we don't NEED to know about these sad events. The fact that both India and Pakistan have The Bomb and have aspects of their respective cultures which clearly demonstrate a lack of concern for the value of human life is very scary and somethng we SHOULD be made aware of. To what end, I truly don't know. :( CB |

04 Jul 02 - 08:58 AM (#742121) Subject: RE: BS: Three Shockers in the News From: Butch My Boy Scout troop cleaned a National Park last weeek . In my town the local vol. fire department spent three hours cutting a car apart with hand tools to say the life of a woman who had gone over a 50' embankment. The firemen had to rig lines just to get to her and work for three hours in 95* heat. An not a paycheck among them! All volunteer. In our local bank this week a 72 year old man had a serious heart attck, a local woman performed CPR on this stranger until EMS could arrive. Where are we going as a race? Depends where you look! |

I'm sure they had one in Seoul not that long ago, so I can't imagine that they will have another one soon. Maybe the news report was talking about the World Cup, recently held in Korea and Japan. Even then, it is out of date as it is finished now. Anyway, apart from cultural squeamishness, what is the problem with eating dogmeat? I might protest about cruelty towards dogs being used for meat, but unless you are vegetarian, what is the problem in eating dogmeat per se? The French eat horse, don't they? |
