21 Sep 98 - 03:29 PM (#38826) Subject: wind in the willow(s)??? From: Daniel Hi out there ! I just returned from Ireland to Germany and I still have a song in my ear that an irish guy sang one evening. The only thing I know is the name of the song: The wind in the willow (or willows?). Now I was searching for a recording of the song, but I didn´t find anything. Who knows the words to the song and who can tell me which artist made a recording of it ??? I´m waiting... Daniel |
21 Sep 98 - 04:30 PM (#38835) Subject: Lyr Add: BREAD AND FISHES (Alan Bell) From: Songbob From DigiTrad: BREAD AND FISHES (Alan Bell) 1. As I went a walkin' one mornin' in spring, I met with some travelers in an old country lane. One was an old man, the second a maid, And the third was a young boy who smiled as he said: CHORUS: We've the wind in the willows, and the birds in the sky. We've a bright sun to warm us, wherever we lie. We have bread and fishes and a jug of red wine To share on our journey with all of mankind. 2. I sat down beside them, the flowers all around, And we ate on a mantle spread out on the ground. They told me of prophets and princes and kings, And they spoke of the one God who knows everything. CHORUS 3. I asked them to tell me their name and their race, So I might remember their kindness and grace. "My name is Joseph, this is Mary, my wife, And this is our young son, our pride and delight. We travel the whole world, by land and by sea, To tell all the people how they might be free." CHORUS 4. Sadly, I left them, in an old country lane, For I knew that I never would see them again. One was an old man, the second a maid, And the third was a young boy who smiled as he said: CHORUS @religion filename[ BRD&FISH Tune file : BRD&FISH It's been recorded by Tommy Macom and Liam Clancy, among others. |

It's also in one of those Bridie and whoever song books around in the '70s LTS |

02 Jul 02 - 09:22 AM (#740669) Subject: RE: Tune Req: bread and fishes From: Jeri The timing in the DT tune sounds a bit off. If you removed every single dotted half note, it would sound right to me. Here are the dots from Yet Another Digital Tradition. (It's still the DT, so it's the same tune Masato linked to above.) |
03 Jul 02 - 12:48 AM (#741169) Subject: RE: Tune Req: bread and fishes From: Liz the Squeak It is also published in a book - possibly 'Acclaim the King' or one of the 'Songs of the Spirit' books. Any good music shop should be able to help, or try a church or cathedral bookshop, especially if that church has a large choir. I'm sorry I don't have access to mine at the moment or I'd give you a ISBN to use. I do know it's in one collection of folk songs, if I could remember the author (brain says Cyril Tawney, but don't quote me on that) you could try a search for an anthology of theirs. Good luck. 04 Jul 02 - 04:41 AM (#742013) Subject: RE: Tune Req: bread and fishes From: Dave Bryant There is another verse which is omitted in the DT version (and in many published versions), it goes in the penultimate position. We're travelling to Glaston through England's green lanes, To hear of men's troubles, to hear of men's pains. We'll travel the whole world by land and by sea, To show all the people how they can be free. The song is based on the legend that the young Christ travelled to Glastonbury with his uncle and this extra verse (by Alan Bell) helps to establish the fact. |

04 Jul 02 - 12:26 PM (#742287) Subject: RE: Tune Req: bread and fishes From: Murray MacLeod I have Alan Bell's recording of this song, on which he does a fine job. The song of his which I really like, however, is his parting song, which I believe is called "Here's to You". It is the best farewell song I have ever heard. Murray |
18 Jan 13 - 03:32 PM (#3468196) Subject: Lyr Add: BREAD AND FISHES (Alan Bell) From: Jim Dixon I listened to this recording on Spotify and made corrections to the version in the DigiTrad database. Most importantly, two lines were missing from that version, making verse 3 awkwardly have 6 lines. (Alan Bell) As sung by Alan Bell on "The Definitive Collection" (2005) 1. As I was a-walking' one morning in spring, I met with some trav'llers in an old country lane. One was an old man, the second a maid. The third was a young boy who smiled as he said: CHORUS: With the wind in the willows, and the birds in the sky, There's a bright sun to warm us, wherever we lie. We have bread and fishes and a jug of red wine To share on our journey with all of mankind. 2. So I sat down beside them, with the gay flowers around, And we ate from a mantle spread out on the ground. They told me of peoples and prophets and kings, And all of the one God who knew ev'rything. CHORUS 3. So I asked them to tell me their names and their race, That I may remember their kindness and grace. "My name is Joseph; this is Mary, my wife, And this is our young son, who is our dear life." CHORUS 4. "We are travelling to Glaston, through England's green lanes, To hear of men's troubles, to hear of men's pains. We travel the wide world, for the lands and the sea, To tell all the people how they can be free." CHORUS 5. So sadly, I left them in that old country lane. I know that I never shall see them again.
