02 Jul 02 - 08:16 AM (#740637) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: parody of Barrets Privateers From: Uncle Jaque There's one we hear from time to time around the campfires of a Civil War Reenactment known as the "Atrocity Song"; it might even be on the Digitrad DB. It contains such fond sentiments as "Rape the women; kill the people; throw the babies from the steeple" and that sort of thing. |

02 Jul 02 - 09:49 AM (#740683) Subject: Lyr Add: GARNET'S HOMEMADE BEER (Ian Robb) From: delphinium A parody of Barrett's Privateers popular in Canada is Ian Robb's "The Last of Garnet's Home Made Beer" (I heard it at a local gig a few months ago). Garnet is, of course, Stan Rogers' brother - fiddler, singer, and man of many talents... Lyrics are available on several web sites, here they are:
GARNET'S HOMEMADE BEER
GARNET'S HOMEMADE BEER Time: 2/2 Tenor: D Bass: C
Oh, the year was Nineteen Seventy-eight
CHORUS:
Oh, Garnet Rogers cried the town
This motley crew was a sickening sight
Well we hadn't been there but an hour or two
Now Steeleye Stan was a frightening man
Stan took one sip and pitched on his side
So here I lay in me twenty-third beer |

02 Jul 02 - 12:28 PM (#740763) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: parody of Barrets Privateers From: Joe Offer Did you guys ever find the Mickey parody? It's (Click). I admit I've sung it a few times, but only for audiences that aren't too discriminating. -Joe Offer- Although the song is in the DT and has been posted here from various Websites, I find that the lyrics from the Steve Briggs Stan Rogers Website are superior transcriptions. So, here are the lyrics from an archive copy of the Briggs Website: The Stan's Songs Parodies PageAt the request of Ariel Rogers, I've taken off all but Ian Robb's parody. Ariel says of Stan and his lyrics: "...(many people don't realize) how important his lyrics were to him. He sweat blood and burned the midnight oil for a lot of those pieces. They were a part of him. While highly funny, even Stan wasn't all that crazy about 'Garnet's Home Made Beer' and thus never encouraged it's being sung." The Last Of |
02 Jul 02 - 06:20 PM (#740987) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: parody of Barrets Privateers From: Celtic Soul My fave parody comes from my Bandmate, Skivvy: Oh the year was 1778, how I wish I was in Shurbrook now. Barret was smashed like a bowl of eggs, and I just made halifax yesterday, the last of Barretts Privateers. That's it... He does something similar with "American Pie" as well. |
02 Jul 02 - 08:12 PM (#741043) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: parody of Barrets Privateers From: Little Hawk So, he's a minimalist... I wonder what he could do with "Stairway to Heaven" or "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands"? Or how about his version of "War And Peace"? - LH |
02 Jul 02 - 09:11 PM (#741078) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: parody of Barrets Privateers From: Celtic Soul Oh, I am quite sure he could work his special brand of magic on them one and all. You'd have to hear them to appreciate it though. He has excellent comic timing that is lost in the writing. "A long long time ago, and that'll be the day that I die" |

16 Aug 03 - 09:03 PM (#1003406) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Barrett's Privateers (Parody by Ian R From: GUEST,Steven Horii I have heard a parody of Barrett's Privateers done by a group of women singer songwriters. I don't recall they lyrics, but I believe it was about a contemporary sailing outing and made light of yuppies. If anyone knows who performed this version and/or what the lyrics are, I would like to know. I did some searches of CD jackets of the Four Bitchin' Babes but could not find anything that sounded like the parody. |
