BS: the latest swindle

07 Jul 02 - 12:19 AM (#743602)
Subject: the latest swindle
From: mack/misophist

I must be either too innocent or too stupid to understand this. Surely it's a swindle, but how? The information requested doesn't seem dangerous enough to be useful to a thief. Would some of the more criminous types here tell me where the gaff is?

Dear Friend,

I am the first son of the late Mobutu Sese Seko, the former President of the Congo Republic. I am presently under protective custody in Nigeria as a political refugee. I got your contact during my search for a stranger that can cooperate with me in this mutual transaction. I want you to note that this business will benefit both of us. However, you must confirm your ability to handle this because it involves a large amount of money. The money (50 million US DOLLARS is my share of my father's estate. I boxed and shipped the money to a security company abroad at the peak of the war/political crisis that rocked my country few years ago. Now the crisis has ended and I need a trustworthy person like you to proceed to the place of the security company in order to clear the fund and invest on my behalf as I dont want my name to be used for now. Note that I will send to you the relevant documents that will enable you take possesion of the the fund for onward investment for our mutual benefit. All I need from you is as follows: 1. A letter of committment (duely signed) that you will keep the transaction strictly confidential. 2. Your confirmation of your ability to handle this. 3. Your IDt or driving licence number for identification to the security company. 4. Your telephone and fax numbers for communication. 5. Your full permanent address. As soon as I get the above information from you, I will disclose to you the name and the country of the security company. I will forward your name and particulars to the security company to enable them contact you accordingly. I will also send to you a LETTER OF AUTHORITY to enable you clear the fund on my behalf. Note that this is a very safe transaction as this money is my share of my father's estate. I am waiting for your response to enable us proceed.

Regards,

Mr. Nzanga Seko Mobutu Seseseko

PS, OF COURSE I reported this.

Folks, get yourself into a good hoax/urban legend site like the one Susan listed or Snopes....Great reading and you can save the space here.

Hi Spaw - glad you showed up - John in Hull thinks the MudCat is a chat-room - set him straight OK, with a PM.

But be nice, maybe he is recovering from a a stroke or something, (could he be drunk? not all the time?) I was led to believe that the Brits had a better school system than ours .... BUT.....given the stuff I've seen here lately, the "Brain Drain of the 50's" didn't leave much behind to reproduce.

So let's see misophist -

You give him your complete name and address, driver's license number, and a sample of your signature.

He sends a change of address (with your signature) to the post office.

Within a week, he probably gets your half dozen lastest credit card offers. If he "accepts" them all for you, at least a couple should come through before your credit report turns to sh...t and the slow ones back off.

Inside of two weeks, you have run up anywhere from $2k to $50k in credit card charges.

and you're not worried???????

John

Hey Gargy- At the top of every page it says " Lyrics Forum & Chat" If you have a problem with this, maybe you should bugger off and start your own site, where you could keep the rest of the chatters out.

Sorry about your eyes (but it was meant for Catspaw only)

John....let me ....let you....in on the "big secret." The joke has gone on long enough...and I sense your frustration.

The "gods of the mudcat" ... the "joe clones" have set up a "VIRTUAL SHELL" of the real Mudcat....that means it "looks" like the real thing but....it is not.

It is a place they direct the real A**HOLES....people like You and ME. We can't interact with the "nice people" and that's why you don't see their posts here...right now....its because we are in the "make-believe-world" of the Mudcat "Virtual Shell." Actually, it can be great fun for the others (who can switch between screens)as they watch two weirdos "duke it out" in the center ring.

It was a brillant solution to the chaos that ruled before.

Don't take is personal. Its just the way things are.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

That story gargoyle wrote about the virtual Mudcat Shell is so devious and scary that it's almost believable. Maybe it's true! I was wondering why most of my more brilliant posts never show up here, seemingly vanishing into some black hole... Obviously they have gone to the REAL Mudcat site, while my stupider comments are directed to this one!

What do I do about it???

Which one am I on now, the real Mudcat or the virtual Mudcat?

JUST WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!!!???? AAAAAAARGH!

Interestingly enough I checked both sites. Ended up wasting some time. Well not really the sites are interesting. Couldn't find anything on the swindle. However a Google search on "Internet Scams" turned up these to useful sites. The SEC has some good advice on how to deal with scams. Scambusters 10 types of swinsles and how to spot them.

Cheers!

Jack, those two are also quite good. Snopes I like a lot, but I'm used to searching it and search engines are all a bit different. The page on Snopes is HERE and there is another page of different examples where the Congo and several exact lines from the email are listed under examples (must be about 25 different ones).

I've always been a bit suspicious of this John from Hull. the basic persona is quite coherent and convincing, vaguely jovial cretin liable to fits of drunken gibberings, living in a state ofconvivial gormless innocence, and totally ignorant of almost everything. Yet he consistently comes up with the most vicious, studied afterthought put-downs that you could imagine. A total master of understated invective. I think that is the mask slipping, the Machiavellian monster showing his true face, his vanity momentarily preventing his maintaining the adopted character. i think we possibly have soemthing in the nature of a Moriarty-type super-criminal among us.
