08 Jul 02 - 01:36 AM (#744194) Subject: The sun is up, the day is clear.... From: GUEST,Andy We have a recording which we can't identify. Lyrics start as in subject, then - 'the dog is barking at the door' and go on to describe leaving 'Paddy's shamrock shore' bound for Helsinki. Also on album version of Hard Times Come Again No More. Any ideas on the artist(s)? |
11 Jul 02 - 11:38 AM (#746546) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The sun is up, the day is clear.... From: Jim Dixon This isn't very clear. Do I understand correctly that you have a tape copy of an album, and you can't identify the album or the performer(s)? Or did the tape come from a live performance? Please try again. Quote a line or so from each song. Give us the exact words if possible. Make it clear whether your quotes come from the same song or different songs, etc. Describe the performance: male voice, female voice, several voices? What instruments? Are the songs all Irish? It's likely we can help if you give us more information. |

22 Jul 02 - 05:01 PM (#752614) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The sun is up, the day is clear.... From: GUEST Sorry haven't been able to get on line for a while. Yes it's a tape of an album which we can't identify. It is a male singer, sometimes more than one voice, and the instruments sound like violin, tin whistle and guitar? They could be Irish. Songs in the order as follows (I think it's all by the same group)
"O come on you lads of high renown
...her name is Mary, but I cant make out all the words on this track.
when I came to an alehouse along the highway opened the door and I called for a quart and as to the payment, I gives it no thought Chorus:
whack fol the day. For all in me pocket was one penny..." The others we can't identify. Here are some of the lyrics from the songs
"The sun is up, the day is clear, The dog is barking at the door, It won't be long before I leave and I won't see you no more. And as I reach ??? pier Find the boat and all the gear Me mind goes north to where I'll find myself some day. Three short months... The Summer months and that is all Then I'll say goodbye to Paddy's Shamrock Shore. I'll take a plane to London town And moving over Amsterdam Head on north until I reach Helsinki's shore." 5- "I met her on a moor one day... Ride lassie ride..." 6- Instrumental 7-"Hard Times Come Again No More" It sounds like it's a vinyl recording so it may be fairly old. |

25 Jul 02 - 08:25 AM (#754328) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The sun is up, the day is clear.... From: Jim Dixon I had a go at transcribing the lyrics from that mp3 file. I think I got most of the words. The ones I missed are represented by (...). I think they mostly involve Irish place names, which I'm not very good at. Doubtful words are marked with (?). Maybe others can fill in the blanks.
VERSE 1: Oh, the sun is up. The day is clear. The dog is barking at the door.
CHORUS 1: Three short months in..., the summer months and that is all.
VERSE 2: All summer long I sang that tune, fished for salmon and lobster, too. (Repeat CHORUS 1)
VERSE 3: And moving north, I made my way. I spent some time...
CHORUS 2: So farewell to ... to Dublin town, my comrades all (?),
(Repeat CHORUS 2.)

09 Jun 21 - 01:47 AM (#4109425) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The sun is up, the day is clear.... From: Joe Offer Thanks, Rivo. That's the hint I needed. The album title is Korkleg (click), by the Finnish folk band Korkkijalka, mostly known for playing Irish folk music. The band was founded in 1982 as "Shandrum". In 1984 the band, led by Kari Reiman, played in a theatre play called "Richard's Corkleg" by Brendan Behan. Record label Hi-Hat wanted to release the soundtrack, but demanded that the name of the band should be in Finnish, and this is how Shandrum changed into Korkkijalka. Since the early 90s, the band has only done some occasional gigs. But I still can't be sure which song is the song requested in the original post, the one Jim Dixon transcribed. I'm guessing it's "Moving North." I see that Kevin Burke of the Celtic Fiddle Festival played on this album. -Joe- Tracks:
