BS: Happy Birthday Art, Ole Buddy!

Yes, I know, we can't do a Happy birthday thread for everyone. But then, you aren't everyone,Art. When I think about all we've gone through,it Thiemes like Old Times. Your essence continues to add fragrance to my life. I was just thinking today that all the arrangements I do on my own songs are mine, which makes me the Lone Arranger. Have a great day, June 9. If I'm off a day or two (hopefully I got the date right this year,) just celebrate as much as you want, as long as you want.:-)

Naw, Bat Goddess and I have already claimed June 9th! Sorry, Art, but as much as you might like to join the illustrious Gemini Squad here at Mudcat, you're stuck with the Crabs. Try to make the best of it anyway, and have a great birthday!!!

Poor Art. Not only do they get the day of his birth wrong but then add insult to injury with "Your essence continues to add fragrance to my life" and a reference to his crabs. Or is this in the tradition of the Spaw birthday thread? Say nothing nice and allude frequently to poor hygiene..

Screw that. Happy Birthday, Art.

Happy birthday Art! You were the first to welcome me to Mudcat (sorta) I asked if anyone had a date for an event, and you offered to take me as YOUR date. Gave me an idea what to expect at Mudcat! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Now Sins my dear, I would personally say nothing derogatory about Art. Any man who can tell the same lame jokes over and over as much as I do and then still have some respect around here, gets nothing but my admiration! Anyone who can start a thread running into the hundreds of posts because he's PO'ed and decides to make his point with sarcasm definitely gets my respect. I do it and all I get are flames..........Moreover, anyone who would take the trouble to send me a tape...not of singing mind you....but of some 92 year old fart really telling it like it was and opening me up to a different past......Well he gets my respect too. And finally, anyone who has contributed so much to this place and to my own personal well being while fighting his own battles without fanfare, will always have my respect.

Happy Birthday Art.....and many more.....very many more!

Pat

Youse guys and gals are pretty amazing. Thanks kids. It's the old #61 this go around. And Jerry, my essence continues to add fragrence to Carol's life as well. This life truly is a gas----to repeat yet another joke. Do hope you got my phone message.
Well, Pat, I repeated them jokes year after year on stage----so why should I quit now? The new ones don't seem funny to me lately---but most here know that the old artifacts are, traditionally, my favorites. Can't teach an old dog new math. See you tomorrow after some shuteye.

Mr. Earl-----Many trains carried live canaries whenever they could. If a train had a difficult time getting up a grade the brakeman'd bang on the side of the car the birds were housed within with a 2 by 4. The birds would instantly take to the air and lighten the train enough for the spinning driving-wheels to take the whole thing over the hump!Honest.

but the cost of canaries was so great back then, that they achieved the same effect by feeding the brakeman/conductor on beans and cabbage and having him stand on the rear caboose platform!! The trick was in the timing...(It is a little known fact that listening to an old brakeman tell about this is how the idea for JATO (jet assisted take-off) for the Air Force came about!)

...or sometimes on tough grade, like Horseshoe Curve in Pa., if a helper engine was not available, they'd boost steam pressure by getting two guys like Bill & Art to exhale into the valve gear.

Of course, all these tecniques became obsolete when someone (Jay Gould's daughter?) realized that if you put larger wheels on the caboose, the train would always be goung downhill, and no coal at all was required.

Since the topic of canaries and gasses has arisen in this thread.... it came to mind.......I have been told that they used canaries in the coal mines to detect when the explosive gasses down deep in the mine had reached a level of danger.......the canary would die.....and the miner would get the hell out!!!

Do you suppose those canaries were freed from forced labor...??? Or was there just a run on canaries in 1903?

I suppose you could say the canaries were freed, but this particular group was traced in the Appalachian mountains for years following the wreck. Eventually forming into 7 groups, most had a hard time surviving in the wild. One surviving group was traced to a nesting site across the Cumberland Gap where they had migrated. Most of the local folk enjoyed having these unique birds in their hills. The main nesting area was on the Clinch River northwest of Knoxville. However, the mercury contaminating the river along with the proximity to Oak Ridge, where the birds were often seen feeding, caused mutations and eventually death to the almost the entire flock. The only known descendant of these birds can be seen today on Sesame Street at PBS.

I've mentioned here before, as Pat probably has taken note of, that when I was on the Mississippi R. singing, an entire tow went aground on a sandbar. The barges were filled not with canaries but with pigeons. Those tows always had a deckhand on board who was expert with a bullwhip. He would crack his whip enough times to get the birds flying. That would most certainly lighten the load, the tow would reverse it's screws and the whole mass of barges would get unstuck from the grounding. This was one of those pretty well-known pigeon tows that some pediatrists treat.

Judy and Dennis, It was great having you stop by on your last music tour to the wild west. Folks, Judy is alluding to a friend of mine who, when quite drunk, kept bothering a woman at a party. He kept yelling, "Do lemons have legs?"---and right in her ear. Finally she told him, "Listen you sot, I'll tell you this one time only. Lemons do NOT have legs !! He walked away telling her, "Oh, then I must've just squeezed your canary into my drink."

(Pat will now note where and when I previously posted this tale.)

Thanks again for the b-day greetings----but I've never figured out how to use one o' those particular bathroom fixtures.

Thread Name: History Needed -- Song "Barges"
Subject: RE: History Needed -- Song

On the Mississippi River a group of barges filled with pigeons went aground and the entire tow was stuck fast blocking the river traffic. The Capt. was adept with a bullwhip and he'd crack his whip and get the birds to flying. That lightened the load and they easily backed off the sandbar. Of course, that was a pigeon-tow.
Barges filled withy Tic-Tac candy would be a tic-tac-tow.

Hammers would be a hammer-tow, but they'd need to be removed surgically!

Actually Art, I should have been more accurate in my above reply. To be perfectly pedantic about it all, you also told the story a few months later on December 29, 1998. And as you will note, I was on your case even even then!

Catspaw (as opposed to Cat's Maw---Ised to think a pap test was to figure out who the father was)
As I mentioned here once somewhere else, on the Misssissippi River, barges ("We don't need no stinkin' barges!!") were often filled with live pigeons. When the tow (term for several barges pushed by a towboat) went aground, a guy would crack his bullwhip & get the birds to flyin'--- that lightened the load enough to get 'em floatin' on their way. These were famous from Lake Itasca in Minnesota all the way to the dead zone below New Orleans as PIGEON TOWS.Sometimes hammers were transported that way too---hammer tows. Even tic-tac candy...

My 500 pound uncle once dropped a safe he was moving & broke his foot. We had to call a toe truck to get him to the hospital!

Jean,

That club was called THE BLUE RIVER CAFE in downtown Milwaukee. It was formerly a bank and the huge pillars made seeing the stage easily quite hard to do. Thank you for reminding me about that. I'd forgotten. But Pat'spaw serves as my memory around here more often than not. He's quite a fellow and one o' these days I'd like to meet him and tell him that to his face----but I'd probably forget to do that.

Jean, was that where we shared the bill when I met George? Somehow Charlotte's Web in Rockford, IL seems right for that. Or maybe the La Crosse, Wisconsin festival?------Whatever, it was an amazing honor to work with you and to get to know you both. Your music taught me what the tradition was all about.--And George's BIG BEN story --- well, it's classic and singular in it's own right !!??

Thanks for giving us the dulcimer and all the varients. You made me feel like I knew all of you in those hills around Viper, KY. It's really a kick and a half to find you now at Mudcat.

Love ---Art
P.S.---Sandy, I'll wear the Folk Legacy GREEN MAN cap proudly. Thanks to Caroline, yourself and the guys for including me in your huge adventure.
