Help: Folk/blues scene in San Francisco?

Hi all! I'll be visiting San Francisco in the middle of August. I was wondering if there are any nice places to go for a folk music fan. Any nice coffeehouses or recordstores?

Other reccomendations for a first time visitor is also appreciated!

Cheers

You can check out the online version of The Folknik, the newsletter of the San Francisco Folk Music Club. However, it looks like they haven't updated it since February. So I'd look up the San Francisco Folk Music Club in the white pages, or stop by the club at 887 Clayton St. (that address may be wrong...I was last there billions of brain cells ago). There are a few Bay Area Catters: Bev and Jerry, and radriano come to mind. Lots of wonderful music there in the other City by the Bay.

Aloha,
Mark

If you are a musician, be sure to stop by Lark in the Morning music store in the old Cannery building. We stopped in San Fransisco very briefly a few years ago and it was the one "must see" place on my list. If you are not familiar with them, CLICK HERE .

Mark:

It's 885 Clayton. And we don't exactly live in the Bay Area. We're about 250 miles south but from where you are we guess that's pretty close. Other 'catters in the Bay Area are Charlie Noble, Chanteyranger, and Melanie.

Georgios:

For folk venues in the bay area click here or here or here

Hey, we just realized that we'll be passing through the Bay Area in the middle of August, too. Keep us posted and maybe something of a mudcat nature will materialize.

P.J. and Dave Swan, Sourdough, Toadfrog, BSeed, and Riggy are also in the area. (and I think Amos is - that right?) Keep us posted on what dates you'll be here, Georgios, and I'll post events from the Folknik for those dates, if you don't find current info for it. What kind of folk/trad music are you most interested in? If you like Irish, there's the Sunday night session at the Starry Plough Irish Pub in Berkeley, across the bay from San Francisco. Riggy, P.J., and myself are regulars there. August 6th (which might be too early for you) there is a chantey sing aboard a schooner in San Francisco, where me, Melani, Radriano, Toadfrog, and Riggy can be found. It's also across the street from the aforementioned Lark In The Morning store. For blues, the newspaper San Francisco Chronicle has club listings.

I have an ex-boyfriend who moved to San Francisco about three years ago. He plays in Dixieland bands, and also plays solo at bars and coffeehouse showcases and the like (mainly performing the old labor-union songs and some blues). I'll give him a call and see what SF-area folk and blues venues he recommends.

Hey, I have it on good authority that Charley Noble lives in Maine, although there's rumors he's planning a Bay visit in early September.

Thanks everyone! I'll be in SF Aug 15-25

Schooner::: I'm interested in delta blues and the american folk tradition of balladeers like woody guthrie, pete seeger and ramblin jack. (and all kinds of protest, cowboy and hobo songs)

I guess it's because I remember you folks from Camp Harmony. Right? Or has my ginkgo deficiency really taken over?

Aloha,
Mark

Mark:

Yes, Camp Harmony. And we still go every year. Have been for 25 years. For the last fifteen we've been coming 250 miles. Before that, all the way from L.A.

You need to come again. Van Rozay came from the aloha state a time or two until he moved back to the bay area. See you at New Years?

We'll try for some sort of 'cat get together.

While in the area ndon't miss Down Home records in El Cerrito. It's the home of the Arhoolie label, and a retailer of all the folk and blues vinyl, tapes and CD's you could want. Show up there with lots of time and money.

Oops. I didn't do too well on line breaks. San Pablo is the street, El Cerrito the town.
