Mermoz was France's Earheart - early pilot, flew off into oblivion.

HYMNE À MERMOZ

Mermoz, ton courage
Mermoz, ton grand coeur
Pour nous tu resteras
L'exemple vivant qui guidera no pas
Mermoz, quand l'espace
Te prit dans ses bras
Ton message il nous laissa
Avec audace
Mermoz, faire face!

T'élevant au dessus des brumes de ce monde
Tel un archange rayonnant
Traçant dans le ciel ton inlassable ronde
Toujours plus haut t'élevant
Surmontant toutes tes faiblesses
Ignorant désespoir et peur
Tu restes un exemple
Pour notre jeunesse
Qui t'admire et te rend honneur
Mermoz, ton courage
Mermoz, ton grand coeur
Pour nous tu resteras
L'exemple vivant qui guidera no pas
Mermoz, quand l'espace
Te prit dans ses bras
Ton message il nous laissa
Avec audace
Mermoz, faire face!

English gloss: Mermoz, your courage, Mermoz, your great heart, for us you will remain a living example, guiding our path; Mermoz, when space took you in its arms, it left us your message: Perkily, Mermoz, face up! Lifting you up above the smog of this world, like a shining archangel, tracing your tireless way through the sky, lifting you ever higher; overcoming all your weaknesses, never knowing despair or fear, you remain an example to the youth of today, who admire and honor you...Mermoz, your courage, Mermoz, your great heart, for us you will remain a living example, guiding our path; Mermoz, when space took you in its arms, it left us your message: Bravely, Mermoz, face up!

That title should read "Hymne à Mermoz" - but I guess you can't put accents on capital letters in html.

Hi, Mrr - nice song.
Apparently, it has to be À
Note the semicolon at the end, and the grave in lower-case letters. And it's nice that you didn't try using special characters like graves in the thread title, because Joe might get upset....

HYMNE À MERMOZ. (ampersand pound sign 192 semicolon produces capital A grave). Why shouldn't they be used? The word is mis-spelled without the accent.

Umlauts and a few others offer real problems. Ö without the umlaut mark means that an "e" must be added after the "O" when the word is put into English; Peña must be spelled Penya if the tilde is left off. These are just two of the rules for transliteration into English that must be followed in printing.
Cañon is one that offers no problem since we have the equivalent word canyon, but many don't have direct equivalents.

Actually, in French, it is NOT correct to place accents on capital letters, so it wasn't too bad that I couldn't. Also, yes, Joe, I know better than to try to put them in the title!

Penya is the correct spelling if you're Catalan...

Found a nice little biography of Mermoz... but it's in French.
