Lyr Req: Back in the Old Sunday School

This may be a tough one, but I learned it as a kid from a Regal Zonophone 78. It was 1930's cowboyish in style with country male harmonies.

The chorus went something like "...we promised to love one another, learning the sweet Golden Rule, .......... back in the old Sunday school.

I have no real idea whether it was of US or Australian origin, but they also sang Ragtime Cowboy Joe.

I am pretty sure I have it, but at the moment, I cannot think who might have done it, so I don't know where to start looking. I will think on it for a while and maybe it will come to me.

Go to phonographs.com, then click on accessories, then click on sheet music. They have the sheet music for sale for $3.00 plus shipping and handling.

After 4+ years my thanks go to Dale, but I was never confident that I would be buying the right sheet nusic - the advertised title is slightly different.

I now know that this was recorded by the Beverly Hillbillies in 1932/4 and yes, after 40 years my memory was correct that the other side was Ragtime Cowboy Joe.

Anyone have the lyrics please? I could whip up the melody from memory, but probably not the harmonies. This song was my earliest memory as a kid of close male harmonies, so it's very dear to my heart.

As an aside, I rarely get to hear male folk harmonies in Australia, even though there are any number of fantastic female groups and ad hoc performances. Are all the males too busy playing fiddle and DADGAD parlour pieces?

Regards, John

According to http://www.rootsandrhythm.com/roots/New_Releases/newsletter124_country.htm, "Back in the Old Sunday School," performed by The Fabulous Beverly Hill Billies, is included in the Various Artists' collection "Traditional Country Music Makers, Vol. 8: The Gospel Way," Magnet #MRCD008, and the CD can be purchased from that web site.

And according to http://www.millersville.edu/~archives/archweb/manuscripts/scoreB.htm+%22Back+in+the+Old+Sunday+School%22&hl=en&ie=UTF-8, the authors were Phillips H. Lord, May Singhi Breen and Peter De Rose, and it was published as sheet music in 1932.

Well, I don't know anymore than I did four years ago. It has never "turned up."

Other recordings I found mentioned besides what Jim found were by Dan Robert's Hometowners and The Pickens Sisters. None of these seem the least bit familiar to me, so I guess I was wrong when I said I thought I had it.

My grandfather used to sing this song to me and my siblings and cousins around 1957.
One cousin was inquiring about the song as she has a paper with most of the lyrics written by our late grandfather.
I found (ukulele) sheet music online by Mai Singhi Breen, see link:

You can also purchase CD by The Original Beverly Hill Billies at:

From the "May Singhi Breen Collection of Ukulele Solos" (New York: Robbins Music Corporation, 1955)—see the URL above:

BACK IN THE OLD SUNDAY SCHOOL
Phillips H. Lord, May Singhi Breen, Peter De Rose
New York: Leo Feist, Inc., 1932, 1955.

When we held our hymnbook together,
Back in the old Sunday school,
We sang ev'ry song,
Learned right from wrong,
Back in the old Sunday school.
I remember the time
Your hand clasped in mine,
Learning the sweet golden rule.
They taught us to love one another
Back in the old Sunday school.

[WorldCat.org indicates this is only the chorus; there is a missing verse beginning "Living in dreams of my childhood".]

I think this allows one to locate the work in a library nearby.

It was also done by the Delmore Brothers, but I can't locate that on YouTube. I'll get to the lyrics when I can he said, hoping someone beats him to it.

WHEN WE HELD OUR HYMNBOOKS TOGETHER

When we held our hymnbooks together
Back in the old Sunday school
We'd sing every song, learn right from wrong
Back in the old Sunday school

I remember the time, your hand clasped in mine
Learning that sweet golden rule
They taught us to love one another
Back in the old Sunday school

Living in dreams of my childhood
Back in the long, long ago
That little white church in the wildwood
That's where I'm longing to go

When we held our hymnbooks together
Back in the old Sunday school
We'd sing every song, learn right from wrong
Back in the old Sunday school

I remember the time, your hand clasped in mine
Learning that sweet golden rule
They taught us to love one another
Back in the old Sunday school

Living in dreams of my childhood
Back in the long, long ago
That little white church in the wildwood
That's where I'm longing to go

When we held our hymnbooks together
Back in the old Sunday school
We'd sing every song, learn right from wrong
