20 Jul 02 - 01:39 PM (#751649) Subject: Kendel's return performance From: jets Well, he was in great spirits when I spoke to him before the performance. His speaking voice was as I remembered it. His singing voice, he said, was unpredictable. He could start off in one key and in the middle of a song, his voice would change to another key. So he gets on stage. Sitting on a stool with that big guitar on his lap, he starts off with "I Just Don't Look Good Naked Anymore." Did a credible job. Told a joke and then informed the crowd that he had a drinking problem as he pulled out a water bottle and took a long drag on it. The problem it seems is that he has been reduced to drinking water. From that point on, I am sorry to say, It was all downhill. I think it was after the fourth song his voice was gone and he had to give it up and let his backup performer finish the set, but by golly, he gave it all he had. The audience gave him a tremendous ovation. What a great trooper. Joe PS The above occurred last night at White's Beach Bluegrass Festival in Brunswick, Maine. |
20 Jul 02 - 02:16 PM (#751658) Subject: RE: Review: Kendels return performance From: Mudlark I think it remarkable that Kendall was able to do so much, such a short time after surgery. I'm sure just seeing him, and being there to witness such a valiant effort, was worth the price of admission....Way to go, Kendall! |

20 Jul 02 - 04:26 PM (#751707) Subject: RE: Review: Kendels return performance From: Rick Fielding Hi Kendall.....well, tonight I'm makin' my PC (post cancer) debut, and other than having a very sore stomach (where the stitches are starting to heal...OUCH!) and about 50% of my normal strength (it's comin' back gradually) I should be able to struggle through it. Good thing we're tough ol' veterans eh? Cheers Rick |
20 Jul 02 - 04:42 PM (#751711) Subject: RE: Review: Kendels return performance From: Jeri Break a leg, Rick. (At least it won't interfere with your pickin'!) Kendall, ya got guts. You sound like you've improved a bunch since Old Songs, less than a month ago. I'll raise a shot of Poland Springs (water) to you and toast to continued laryngeal healing. |

21 Jul 02 - 04:38 PM (#752083) Subject: RE: Review: Kendels return performance From: Rick Fielding Well I sang three songs..."Lonesome Traveller", "Swing Low Chariot" and "Divin' Duck Blues" at a well attended memorial for an old friend who passed away a few months ago (Ray Woodley). Bloody hell, it felt good to be doing what I do again. Kedall...Hope we can sing a few songs together before too much time passes. Cheers Rick |

22 Jul 02 - 06:30 AM (#752295) Subject: RE: Review: Kendall's return performance From: kendall I've never had any serious problems before, so, I'm impatient to get on with it. I know that the older you get, the longer it takes to heal, but, I always think it doesn't apply to me. Just goes to show what I've been saying these past few years, "I'm not the man I used to think I was." |

23 Jul 02 - 12:06 AM (#752820) Subject: RE: Review: Kendall's return performance From: Art Thieme And just last evening, I, too, at the award ceremony talked about in another thread, sang a short little song and "picked" my jewsharp. It was my first time on stage singing since 1997. My voice? Well, I sang like a bird---or so I was told. (Something between a duck and a chicken.) But I also tossed out a few jokey tales and puns & then quit for lack of saliva from medications I take. Kendall and Rick, Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seems we all picked the same moment to get back in the saddle and ride----but NOT QUITE YET into the proverbial sunset !!! Onward... Art Thieme |
23 Jul 02 - 12:30 AM (#752825) Subject: RE: Review: Kendall's return performance From: Kaleea Several years ago, I went to hear Luciano Pavarotti, the great Tenor in concert in St. Paul, Minnesota. The critics complained that his voice was not what it used to be 30-40 years ago in his early years of mega stardom. The purists complained that he should not have performed in the St. Paul Civic Center Arena where such things as professional wrestlers (like Hulk, Macho Man, etc.) "performed", and that he should not use microphones for himself & the orchestra & the other singer, as this is not the way serious music should be sung, etc. And the people in the audience (& I) loved every moment of his performance! So earlier this year, they held "Pavarotti on the Plains" and I went once again to hear him in concert. And the people in the audience (including myself) loved every moment of it, and cheered for encores until he absolutely had to leave for the rest of the evening's activities. Why? Because we have loved him & his music for many years, and because we appreciate his contributions he has made to music, not to mention the fact that he brings this kind of music to the people--where we are. Sometimes it's not about the purists, or the critics/reviewers. Sometimes it's about the love of the music--and the musician. Hey Kendall---If I were anywhere near you, I'd love to hear you perform!! & my hair is not as dark as it used to be, and my figure is not what it was when I was a teenager, and I have arthritis now, and can't play instruments like I used to, and I can't memorize volumes of music like I used to be able to, and . . . |
23 Jul 02 - 02:14 PM (#753181) Subject: RE: Review: Kendall's return performance From: Stilly River Sage Rick and Kendall are both extremely fortunate--they have an activity they love that will serve as the vehicle to motivate them to recovery. Recuperation may not be as fast as you both want, but when compared to others who have had the same illnesses but having no such artistic outlet, I think you'd be surprised at how you are headed to excellent health much more quickly than your peers. 23 Jul 02 - 02:30 PM (#753194) Subject: RE: Review: Kendall's return performance From: MMario I think I would rather hear Kendall or Art read from a phone book then listen to many of the "megastars". I know I felt d*mned privileged to listen to Rick, Jed and Mick 'put together' a number during last years Getaway - even though I don't think I ever heard it all the way through. I've heard Kendall put more humour into clearing his throat then some people manage in an entire show. |
