22 Jul 02 - 06:07 PM (#752663) Subject: RE: Illinois - Lake County Folk Festival From: Art Thieme Alex, Good to have you here. All my best to you and Sine!! Folks this is a grand festival, wonderful folks and I can personally vouch for the superb quality of many of the musical people on Alex' list of performers. SONS OF THE NEVER WRONG are three of my very favorite people. Bruce Roper singer and guitarist and songwriter comes up with some of the most off the wall but brilliant music ideas you'll ever hear. Knowing my tendency to go only for trad stuff, all I can say is I love these three nuts and their music in spite of their being more clever acoustic pop/rock than anything else. Sue Demel is a dynamo of frenetic non-stop dancing, prancing, song-writing energy with an excruciatingly lovely voice who, if truth be known, I really wish I had known in both the being-acquainted-with sense and also in the Biblical sense when I was 20 years old or so. (But I digress.) Deborah Lader with banjo and other instuments brings a folk presence to the trio that I really appreciate. No other way to say it----- I just love these guys. That's all I have time to say right at present----but, darn it, Garnet R. is great as are the Little Potatoes Rich and Jacki, Kat Eggleston (wonderful voice--nice body) and Don Stiernberg (better guitar by far than body)I know even the ones I've not heard are tops too. I hope you'll go if you're in that Northen part of Illinois. Art Thieme (Alex, now sent me the check.) |

23 Jul 02 - 02:00 PM (#753174) Subject: RE: Illinois - Lake County Folk Festival From: GUEST,Alex Hey Art Thanks for the kind words. I agree with your comments on Sons. If you are talking energy on stage you just have to see Tanglefoot - five crazy Canadians (all five sing and play - guitar, fiddle, keys, mandolin and stand-up bass)who leave you breathless just watching them. Garnet Rogers is just the tops in guitar playing and songwriting and his baritone voice is so smooth on the ear. Small Potatoes are personal friends and favorites - pure professionals. Don Stiernberg is one of the best mandolinists in the country and is in great demand as a session player. Kat Eggleston is not only angelic-voiced blonde eye candy, she is a top guitar player (good enough to play in Shinobu Sato's Trio Basho) and a heck-of-a hammer dulcimer player as well. Not only that, but to make all these performers sound their best, we hired Kokomo Sound and Al Watson, the best acoustic sound engineer in the Midwest. Sorry, no check (by the time we pay all these folks we'll be in the pooorhouse). We thought about giving you another "lifetime achievement" award but decided to wait until you had finished achieving. If you can make it up to Lake County, we'll be pleased to comp you in to the festival. We even have an air-conditioned Green Room. Susan, what could be a better birthday present than a trip to a great festival. |

24 Jul 02 - 07:17 PM (#754042) Subject: RE: Illinois - Lake County Folk Festival From: Art Thieme Alex, how is Shinobu doing??? He was a great guitar player--and then stuff happened to his hands. When I tried to contact him it seemed he didn't want to talk about it or much else either. Give him my best regards. Art |

24 Jul 02 - 08:44 PM (#754100) Subject: RE: Illinois - Lake County Folk Festival From: GUEST,Alex Shinobu was teaching but not playing. He was learning to play left-handed when the same trouble happened to his left thumb. Last I heard he was seeing a specialist in Spain. If he ever decides to get back on the road he has an automatic invite to play the club. |

24 Jul 02 - 10:58 PM (#754167) Subject: RE: Illinois - Lake County Folk Festival From: Art Thieme That's very sad. He was not only a good guitarist, he was/is a brilliant and innovative musician. Folks, this thread drift is about SHINOBU SATO. Art |
