TROUBLE IN THE FIELDS
Nanci Griffith

Baby I know that we've got trouble in the fields
When the bankers swarm like locust out there turning away our yield
The trains roll by our silos, silver in the rain
They leave our pockets full of nothing
But our dreams and the golden grain

Have you seen the folks in line downtown at the station
They're all buying their ticket out and talking the great depression
Our parents had their hard times fifty years ago
When they stood out in these empty fields in dust as deep as snow

(chorus)
And all this trouble in our fields
If this rain can fall, these wounds can heal
They'll never take our native soil
But if we sell that new John Deere
And then we'll work these crops with sweat and tears
You'll be the mule I'll be the plow
Come harvest time we'll work it out
There's still a lotta love, here in these troubled fields

There's a book up on the shelf about the dust bowl days
And there's a little bit of you and a little bit of me
In the photos on every page
Now our children live in the city and they rest upon our shoulders
They never want the rain to fall or the weather to get colder

(repeat chorus)

You'll be the mule I'll be the plow
Come harvest time we'll work it out
There's still a lotta love, here in these troubled fields

Some years since I last heard this, but I have the feeling that the second line in the lyrics above is not exactly as I remember it.

"When the bankers swarm like locust out there turning away our yield"

Can anybody confirm that these are the correct words ? I am thinking of the version as recorded on "A Woman's Heart", by, if I remember rightly, Maura O'Connell.

Murray

Must be on "A Woman's Heart 2", Murray- not on the first one, and I can't lay my hands on the second one just now.

Should be "tearing away our yields." Same error in Cowpie. Lyrics and Chords also on Cowpie.

"But if we sell that new John Deere"

Is that right? And if so, someone explain it to me please.

I've heard it time and again, and it's a terrific song - but it's only just occurred to me that I haven't a clue what that bit means.

McGrath - John Deere manufactures tractors, farm equipment and the like.

And there was I sort of thinking is was "John, dear", and trying to work out what "a new" was. Did they have "gnus" on Western farms maybe? (Well, there used to be camels in Arizona one time I seem to remember.)

Gno it wasn't a gnu.

A John Deere is a wilder beast altogehter.

I'm looking for the lyrics and guitar chords for 'Trouble in our Fields'. Sara Harmer has covered it but i think it's a Nancy Griffith tune. Was unable to find it in the search.
