It showed two photos side-by-side on the cover. In the left hand photo, Edwin is dressed in an outlandish uniform that looks like a cross between Napolean's get-up and the guards at the Witch's castle in Wizard of Oz. He is snarling and surrounded by flames, and holds a cutlass. In the right hand photo, Edwin is dressed in a white jumpsuit and flowered shirt, holding a daisy and giving a peace sign, a blissful look on his mug. |

They looked cool back then, but now they just look like childish squiggles. Some of the music was great - the "art" just sucked. AAAAARRRRGHHHH! This happens occasionally, and I STILL do not know which key it is that makes it happen! Blast! Anyway, that is one incredibly rare album, Jack, and I agree that it has a pretty awful cover, but I don't think it's the worst EVER. Face it, there's some stiff competition out there. Think about heavy metal groups, rockers, alternative bands, rappers, and tacky Christian singers, not to mention country music and Culture Club! Did Jim and Tammy Fay Bakker make some albums? If so, I bet they'd be serious contenders. (BTW, you were wise not to put the great Shatner's name in the thread title...well done.) For worst album cover ever...well... I just finished reading his recent book, "Get A Life", and I have never had so much fun reading anything else in the last 10 years at least. It's a great book. I recommend it without ANY reservations to anyone who has the good sense to read it, jokes about Big Bill notwithstanding. No one has a better humour about William Shatner than Shatner himself, which is one reason why the book is such a delight to read. I am rapidly becoming a real Shatner fan instead of just a humorous imitation of one, and I always liked the Star Trek shows, even though the original one was QUITE corny a lot of the time. Despite the corn, it was also absolutely new and unique in its perspective, and layed the groundwork for finer things to come in the arena of Sci-Fi....like Next Generation, etc. I think Bill Shatner is great, and he knows as well as anyone that he is not exactly among the world's greatest actors...unlike Patrick Stewart, who is undeniably very, very good whether onstage or onscreen. - LH |

Regarding John & Yoko, I don't find that picture offensive particularly. It's just a bit...unusual. There's nothing erotic about it, nor any intention that way in the first place obviously, which is kind of refreshing in these times. I'll tell you what I find offensive...all the stupid soft pornography in advertising, women's fashion magazines, movies, etc. Then there are the men's magazines which go beyond soft pornography to totally soulless vulgarity and absolute obscenity. John and Yoko were eccentric, John was sometimes egomaniacal and insecure, but they were a big improvement on Madison Avenue as far as I'm concerned. In their own confused way they were actually trying to improve the world. How many big business people try to do that? Regarding Cream and the "Wheels Of Fire" album (probably inspired by a certain Dylan song)...AGREED! That awful, awful psychedelic art...oooog! I couldn't stand it even back then. But I like the way the lads look with their long hair and baroque clothing styles! Lovely. It was a time when the past was still honoured...they could almost be French musketeers or something like that. I loved the way young people looked then, and I still love it now in retrospect, for all the silliness of the time. Nowadays (in general) they mostly just look like ghetto punks from Los Angeles or somewhere similar..no romance, no style, no celebration of life, but lots of metal objects stuck through their anatomy. It's nihilistic and very sad. LEJ, etc - I also am scrupulously avoiding the mention of the word S**tner in thread titles. I think you know why. Fortunately, Big Bill is so big that I am sure he will keep showing up here and there regardless... :-) - LH |

As if it's not bad enough tripping over the tripe at flee markets and record stores, I gotta flash to a news channel when the ads come on TV. How these images sell anything to anyone is beyond me. If it's low budget cover rendering they want, any adolescent attempt would be more interesting. I concur with SharonA regarding the White Album. I didn't understand the hoopla then and don't get it now. Sure the music needs to stand on its own, but passing up album art (and it was much bigger then) is like missing breakfast. There was once a Stratford (Ontario, Canada) area band called the Wheezing Dogs who issued one with sparkles glued to the outside. Had to be thrown out to avoid getting them all through one's collection. The record sucked anyway. As an aside, one of my alltime favourites is Steeleye Span's "Now We Are Six". Itself a picture frame as viewed from both sides, too bad the record wasn't their strongest. Peace, Mooh.

Circus freaks prowling the street on the cover, and the only mention of the band is a tattered handbill tacked to a door. It was quite a groundbreaking concept at the time. One of the more interesting...Electric Mud by Muddy Waters. On the cover, Muddy is wearing a barber apron, holding his guitar, and his hair is freshly processed and luxuriant. Inside, Muddy is sitting in a barber chair in the midst of getting his process done, looking into a mirror in which there is also a reflection of a huge, gaudily painted ceramic cobra. Weird, but appropriate. And be careful with the S___ references, Lonesome Hawk. A word to the wise is sufficient. |

"Blonde on Blonde" - An incredible picture. Talk about alienation. It still gives me chills when I look at it now. I mean, look at his eyes....whew! And Kansas did one with John Brown on the cover that looked really wild. I liked it a lot. John Brown gave people chills too. Clinton - Yeah, the Jethro Tull one is a beauty! I literally shuddered when I--a quite impressionable 7th grader--saw the picture of him on the album. The guy was no more than a joke on the "Johnny Carson show" to me, but after seeing his face on the close up album cover scared me. I thought he was some kind of pervert who would attack & molest kids. Then about a year or two later, on a dare, I wrote to him asking for an autographed photo. I actually got it, and made fun of it, tossing darts (no wrapping fish). |

Back when I was buying my first records one of the biggest pleasures was to study the cover while the disc was spinning. More often than not, it was the first time you'd seen what the artist/band actually looked like (which somehow was never how you expected them to look) and, if you were lucky, all the words to all the songs would be there too! I suppose that the music industry was more about the music then.I remember hearing songs by Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor, Diana Ross and the Supremes, on my little one-wave-band radio and having no idea who these people were or what they looked like but I knew what they sounded like and that was what mattered. Seeing their faces on the album cover was a bonus and occassionally the photos gave a clue as to "who" the artist was but you had to like the music first to have bought the album. I'm sure the first test for todays music stars is more likely to come in the photographers studio than the recording studio and if you can pass the first part then you're 75% there. I think I might have a rummage round the attic and dig out my old album collection. Now.......where did I put that old turntable.................. |

Crumb's "art" in general...but I have to admit that the cover on "Cheap Thrills" was among the classic covers of ALL time, and it was perfect for Janis & Big Brother...just the right vibe. Normally speaking, I detested the way Crumb drew women...it made me sick...but his style suited that album just fine, and the music was pretty memorable too. There was an album by some very popular band with a picture of a very young naked red-haired girl holding a silver miniature airplane in her hands...I nominate it as among the 20 or so worst covers ever. - LH |

Just think of those best-of albums of The Byrds and Fairport where they had the "family histories". There was never any thought to making a good cover. Along the top of the cover was the announcement in big letters that the album was in STEREO, long after all albums were stereo and it could be taken for granted. The song list was also printed on the front, along with the title and the artist's name, all of which covered up the photo of the performer. On the plus side, they were consistant, all the covers look the same and are easy to spot at flea markets from a distance. |

But I still basically ignored them back then. It was singers and/or songwriters who deeply interested me. I never bought an album or went to a concert in order to hear a guy play the guitar...I went to hear the singing. I just love both lyrics and singing, that's all. I liked Hendrix, because some of his songs actually were kind of neat on the lyrical and vocal side. - LH |

He admits that it's "pretty cheesy". He did insist though, that it's NOT the absolute worst. "Believe me, if I had had intentions of having the WORST cover of all time, I would have had Leonard there on one side of me, wearing his pointed ears and looking deeply serious, and De on the other side in a tutu. A pink one. I believe then it might qualify as the worst, and I mean the absolute, gut-wrenching, bottom of the barrel WORST. If you've seen De in a tutu, you know just what I mean. Yes, I agree that the camera tripod is incredibly tacky, and the haircut is dated. What can I say? We were working with a...limited budget. If I had it all to do over again...I wouldn't. My nominations for one of the worst and most boring covers of all time was the Kingston Trio Capitol Years CD box set. If you had no idea who they were, this cover would not make you pick it up to even look at it. Art work on the inside showed them and was colorful and bright, just the oustide sucked. Form way back, I pulled out Groover's Pradise album by Doug Sahm with R. Crumb rip-off styled art. It's sorta fun to look at if you knew the area, Austin, TX, back then. Ohterwise, it's pretty bad. |

I also think Dylan's 'Self Portrait' sleeve is a classic but then I think the record is one of his best, too - but maybe that's another thread. Anyone want some? |

Shatner-mania can be forgiven as charmingly low-brow, Dylan-mania is understandable since songwriters do not get any better, but you'd "rather listen to the words and singing" than catch a series of notes that flip your heart upside down and strike a bolt of lightning through your brains??!! I am strictly an acoustic player (cain't do that 'lectric stuff), but the two players mentioned are the absolute cream of the crop in that field, so I had to shoot off my mouth. When you're checking out Clapton, see if you can find "Bernard Jenkins", with John Mayall on piano- it's so tasteful, and so powerful at once. BTW, I'm with Rolfyboy6....that Pat Boone cover is frightening! |

The best Beatle album cover was Rubber Soul, I think. Such a beautiful photograph. The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour album cover was a cheap, crummy, disaster (not in the same league as the unreleased Beatles 65 cover with the dead babies). Amazing how everything associated with that period in Beatlemania is so bad. Meanwhile -- "Their Satanic Majesties Request" is certainly one of the unintentionally funniest album covers. The worst Dylan cover (Whew, where to begin), probably Empire Burlesque. Cheap, cheap, cheap. The back cover has probably the worst picture of Dylan ever (which is saying a great deal), at least until his recent "Vincent-Price-Back-From-The-Dead" phase. yours, Peter T. |

I figure people would either love them or hate them. I'm sure they succeeded in their basic objective...getting noticed, and selling. Peter - Well, "Dark Eyes" is excellent, yes. In my opinion so are "Tight Connection To My Heart", "Trust Yourself", and "When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky". That's 4 really good songs. Some of the others are pretty turgid...but I like the way they sound nonetheless. It remains one of my favourite Dylan albums. I hated it when it first came out, but loved it by a few years later. When it hit the U.S. they were all rounded up to have the covers replaced while new ones were being readied for the manufacturer. A few were distributed with a new cover pasted over the original. A friend had one of those and carefully steamed off the replacement cover to reveal the original. It was a color photraph of the Beatles wearing white lab coats all spattered with blood. They were holding knives and cleavers and there was raw bloody meat all over the place. There were also dolls in various stages of dismemberment. Ringo was standing or kneeling behind those seated in front giving us “the bird” except he had placed the severed head of one of the dolls on his middle finger. I did a quick search of the Net but didn't find it. I'm sure someone somewhere must have scanned this a put it up for everyone to see. This would be my nomination for worst album cover ever. - Mark |

It still ranks with "Phosphorescent Rat" by Hot Tuna as one of the most disappointing records I ever bought. Country Gazette's "A Traitor In Our Midst" has a truly weird cover. So does Hot Tuna's live record (blue and yellow swirls). To this day I have no idea what the title of that record is. |

I wish i had bought it in the record Store in Goldberg when i saw it. There is no information that i could find anywhere about it. But a few German friends gave me a theory as to its origins. They say a local artist may have made it as a joke/art project and put it up for sale as a prank/experiment. It was about 200 DM for the album because of the specially made cover. It was a Scorpions Album (Love at first STing) i think. Instead of the Lady with a scorpion in front of her it had a dog (Doberman) in front of her performing fellatio. It was a very hot looking album cover and no doubt could not ever be sold in record stores. If anyone has any info about this cover please post something about it on a Scorpion fan website or official site. Thanks. |

(And the Beatles "butchers" cover--so why make fun of the "White Album" concept which replaced it--didn't it? in retrospect the whole thing looks like a planned 'manufacture a legend' kind of thing, thought up by Lennon in a cynical moment and passed to his pr people to pull off. Let's say they were tired of the relatively wholesome image they had developed...and wanted to shock the "in-crowd" but still end up selling a lot of records...) But to get back to Blind Faith, I absolutely loved that band, an early version of the "supergroup"--a combination of well-known players from other bands. Great great arrangements, playing, vocals. The lyrics were the weakest link--had they been stronger the album would have been in top-ten rock albums ever. The pedophile-fantasy cover is certainly an arresting image in more ways than one--I would say it is not so much BAD design, technically, as very, very disturbing, especially in its context of "buy this record". For those who haven't seen it, there is nothing overtly sexual in the picture, it exudes a combination of innocence and oddness. Certainly didn't belong on an album cover but neither would the work of Robert Mapplethorpe or any of a bunch of other controversial but talented artists. ...y'know, I just thumbed through a shelf of album covers lookiong for something just plain bad. The worst I found was the Allman Brothers' hokey gambling motif "Win, Lose or Draw", a saloon table scene surrounded by a cliched psychedelic border. My larger conclusion was that I sure miss album covers, most of them were pretty good. A five-inch square CD only gives you room for a glorified logo. It was always a nice touch, especially for a locally popular band or performer, to get a cover done by a local artist who really understood something about their music and how to portray it. And Nicole's got a point, as usual. Whether you loved or hated Aqualung, you sure remembered what it looked like... W-O |

The cover is (presumably intentionally) gross but the music is superb. Lindley is a sponge and this album combines a lot of different influences with reggae right up there. I've enjoyed his subsequent albums but this one has never been bettered, IMHO. |

My favorite bad album cover was by Lyonesse, a French-based Celtic band with Breton, French, Italian and Cornish members (Trevor Crozier was in the group). Their first album was the same turquoise color as el rayo-x, but featured a blurry, hideous black and white photo that obscured every band member's face. Mireille Ben, who was the lead singer, is sitting in the back, and the guitar's headstock is right in front of her face. I can't find a jpg of the whole cover, but the photo is here. It's the first image down. |
