29 Jul 02 - 11:55 AM (#756418) Subject: Cork, Aug 11-14 From: sian, west wales I'm giving myself a mini-break in Cork from 11-14 August, staying in Cork and maybe day-tripping out to somewhere on the 13th. So, a couple of questions: Anyone know any good music pubs? and Anyone know of any good music shops (instruments)? All info. gratefully received. Also, all prayers. I'm flying with the new Air Wales company who, earlier this year advertised for stewardesses, "5 ft 3 in. or shorter and able to swim." Fingers crossed, sian, west wales |

Can't remember the name, but it's good. Retrace your steps and cross at the lights, the folk club is the next pub on your left ( The Corner House? ) on Coburg St. Enjoy !! Roger |

I was wondering if anywhere - in Ireland or anywhere else - there might be a combined musical instrument shop and a pub or bar.
I imagine the licensing laws in England would get in the way of that - otherwise wouldn't it be great if Hobgoblin or someone like that could run such an operation. (As it is I gather that the PEL restrictions even potentially get in the way of people in music shops trying out the instruments they are selling or buying properly, because it can turn into a performance, and we can't be having that.)
But in some more enlightened country on this matter - and that means just about everywhere, now the Taliban have been shifted), maybe it's been tried. |

From: GUEST,greg stephens For music, there's always the Lobby on Union Quay.If it's not happening there(which it probably will be) they'll know where it is.And next door to the Lobby is Charlie's. Monday night is a must, Hank Wedel and Ray Barron will be playing there. Introduce yourself to Ray and say Greg sent you, and ask him if Two Time Polka are playing a gig anywhere. And make sure you have a look round the English Market (nothing to do with England, or music, but a great place.Buy some cheese) |

Call in there and check the notice board for sessions and gigs it should be your first port of call as they'll be up to date on the scene |

From: beachcomber In reply to McGrath and creep a little further on this thread, I had a small restaurant for some 10 years where as well as food (customers were mainly tourists and holidaymakers) I also sold CDs of local artists. I played them while people ate (at a suitable volume ) and it was a very successful side-line. Among the artistes whose recordings I "stocked" were Liam Clancy, Bobby Clancy, Aoife Clancy, Traditional band "Danu", The Butterfly Band, Two-Time Polka (as mentioned in an earlier posting) Ray Barron and Hank Wedel and Brian O'Reilly and Loudest Whisper, all were pleasantly surprised by the extra sales. Beach. PS I just wonder if McG was ever in the town of Borris, Co.Carlow where one of the last "General Stores cum Pub" still flourishes or in Miss Nugents in Kiledmond, same county, a smaller version of the same type of establishment? |

From: Dave & Julie If you can, try Da Barras pub (back room) in Clonakilty (further west along the coast from Kinsale). But if you want a taste of "real" West Cork, you'll find a good example at the Central Bar in Enniskeane (midway between Bandon & Dunmanway) on a Saturday night (but check & phone first - it's a bit of a trek). And remember, in Ireland nothing starts before 10.30. And please if you're going to Cork, don't just stay in the city - tour westwards for the holiday experience of a lifetime. Suggestions: Inchidoney beach at Clon, Lee Valley, Inchigeelagh, Googanbarragh Lake, Bantry, Glengarff (Sat night session at pub on Dowlings camp site a mile down Beara peninsula road - say hello to Mike from Grimsby) & Garnish Island, Baltimore, Sherkin Island - how long have you got?
