Great song, though. Skipjack |

It's a CD-ROM and has not only the lyrics and chord charts (in the correct tunings) of ten of Dougie's songs (including Caledonia and Turning away) but also video footage of Dougie demonstrating the fingering and chord techniques. Even I managed to get the intro to Caledonia, so it must be good! It's about twenty quid and a bargain at that. JB |
31 Jul 02 - 02:03 PM (#757621) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Turning Away - Dougie MacLean From: Bullfrog Jones I've seen him play it live and he plays Clinton's chords all the way through, but two frets up (capo'd at the 2nd fret). It gives a nice drone feel with the open strings. BJ |

12 Feb 10 - 11:44 PM (#2837844) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Turning Away (Dougie MacLean) From: GUEST,Mashkioya I've been trying to figure this song out on the mandolin, and it's just not working. I've tried using Em, C, and D, but from what I can tell in this YouTube video, he sings it in the key of F# minor, which doesn't make sense with those chords. Here's the video: Turning Away - Dougie MacLean with Kathy Mattea Is the version you all are referring to in a different key? |

18 Feb 10 - 02:22 AM (#2842677) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Turning Away (Dougie MacLean) From: GUEST,stew L Try DADGAD tuning (Low to High). It works for me with simple fingering. After seeing Dougie in concert this year I'm fairly certain he plays very little in standard tuning. After tuning in DADGAD use the following fingers to play the chords: D= fret the 3rd string (G) on the second fret - I use my middle finger C= fret the 5th string (A) on the third fret - I use my ring finger Em= fret the 5th string (A) on the first fret - I use my first finger This sounds good both fingerpicked or strummed. DADGAD can be tricky but with some experimenting you can find a lot of nice embellishments. Give it a try. Oh, I capo on the 4th fret but that's only to get it into a key I can sing it in. Second fret sounds right to me. |

21 Apr 10 - 03:33 PM (#2891565) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Turning Away (Dougie MacLean) From: GUEST,Liverpool Beard From what I can gather from the video: All the chords are two tone power chords with the bottom strings ringing free, capo 2nd fret: (Chords as if without capo) Chorus - E, C, D, E, D, C Verses - E, D, C, D, E (I add in a minor on the chord sometimes for effect) |
