Can anyone help please with just one word in the lyrics - I sing a word that makes sense but sure it's not the word written by Harvey Andrews "as they.........their lonely lives, they took their axes & their knives". Would like to get it right - cheers

Hi, Carole - I e-mailed Harvey (an occasional Mudcatter), and maybe he'll drop by. In the meantime, you may be interested in taking a look at The Harvey Andrews Website. -Joe Offer-

"STONE AND WOOD"
Written in the 11th century church in my village of Gnosall in Staffordshire, England.

Here in the quiet parish church
I sit alone and gently search
For the souls of those who's need
Was the seed for all I saw
Puzzled by their lonely lives
They took their axes and their knives
Etched their hope, carved their dream
To make it seem they understood

Chorus
Stone and wood, wood and stone
Candles lit by those alone
Coloured glass, whispered word
Do they pass unheard, unheard

Here in their rows on Sunday morn
On benches that their backs had worn
They sang the hymn, the chanted tune
That told them soon, so very soon
Bended knee their burden's rest
Cup of wine, the wafer blessed
Solemn prayer, the last Amen
Then once again into the light

Seasons round and round again
Young man's lust to old man's pain
Young maid's sweet to old maid's sour
Till the final hour ahead
In the churchyard here they lie
They know the answer now, but I,
I sit here and listen still
And always will, until, until

Thank you so much Harvey - it means a lot to me to keep to the correct lyrics if possible. I have sung Stone & Wood for quite a while, it is one of my favourite songs and one that so many people fall in love with. It reminds me of the hours I have spent in Warnham church (Sussex)tracing through papers while researching our family history. The words of the last verse are especially wonderful. Thank you for writing & recording the song & putting mer right with the words. Carole xx

PS & Thank you Joe

Thank YOU Carole for singing the song. It's one of my own favourite lyrics, and , as I always say, a song not sung is a dead song.I remember distinctly it being delivered (they arrive like E mails you know) as I walked round our local church and I knew I had to get it down quickly so it was actually written on two blank pages torn from an old hymn book with the pen attached to the visitors book. I then had to walk home quickly humming the tune and get it down on tape.

not to seem greedy - but is there anyone who can post the tune? (With Harvey's permission, if that would be all right with him?)

Sorry, haven't the facilities to do that myself. It's on my C.D. "25 years on the road" (next year is the 40th!!)However, if you'd like to contact me personally and send a tape I'll be glad to record it for you to sing if you don't wish to get the c.d.

Harvey, it's obviously a bonus track on the CD, as it's not on the LP. Pity!
