Thoughts on new Linda Thompson CD?

Local folk radio played 3 cuts from this -- titled *Fashionably Late* -- last Saturday. Richard is on at least one cut, as well as two of their kids. I liked what I heard. Anybody gotten it yet, and have an opinion?

mag', I just heard an interview of her, plus some cuts from the CD on today's Weekend edition on NPR. I liked what I heard, too, plsu they said she is going to tour the US with her son and possibly her daughter.

They don't have the audio up, yet, but it should be by tomorrow. Interesting interview.

thanks,

kat

Just got the CD. Only had time for one listen, so these are very early impressions:

Half the songs were co-written by Linda and son Teddy, who does most of the guitar work on the album. Two songs by Linda, one by Teddy, one by Linda and Rufus Wainwright (!), and one by Lal Waterson.

Richard's influence looms large over the project, even though he only appears on one cut. There are at least two songs where it seemed obvious to me that "oh, they're trying to write a Richard Thompson song" -- the master's imagery and way with words, and generally dark outlook, are pronouncedly present.

Musically, the album sounds very nice. Linda's voice is a bit rougher than we remember, not as pretty and smooth, but overall quite good.

I may post a more detailed review later. For now, there's reason to be glad she's back, and if she tours, I'll go see her.

Cheers,
Michael

I heard that same NPR interview, and yes it sounded intriguing. In another interview (print), she warned her old fans not to expect her to sound like she used to, having had such problems with her voice, plus age change the voice. Still sounded pretty good to me.
