Lyr/Chords Req: The Glory of Love (Billy Hill)

04 Aug 02 - 11:36 AM (#759601)
Subject: That's the Glory of Love
From: GUEST,Mark Young

I can't find the lyrics (or chords) to this song. I also can't find "Five foot two, eyes of blue".

Surprised they aren't here. Is there another search site/ engine that has a lot of these songs?

Thanks,

Mark

Hi, Mark - Mudcat is primarily a folk site, although we do our best to answer all requests. You'll find "The Glory of Love" here (click) at Lyrics World.

Five Foot Two is there, too.

Hope that does the trick for you.

You can also find these with chords at The Guitar Guy, along with the words and chords of many other standards.

Mark, Lyrics World does not have the chords, so I hope Joe will forgive me for posting the lyrics with chords here.

Also, I thought the song was too short, so I wrote some extra lyrics. (You could easily do the same, of course.)

THE GLORY OF LOVE
Billy Hill ©1926; Additional lyrics by Jeanene Pratt ©1997

                    G                   D      D7     G
You've got to give a little, take a little
                    G7           C           AM7    G
And let your poor heart break a little:
                            D                   D7      G
That's the story of,    that's the glory of love.

You've got to laugh a little, cry a little
Before the clouds roll by a little
That's the story of, that's the glory of love

.      C                         Am7
 As long as there's the two of us,
                        G           D7          G
 We've got the world and all its charms;
         Cm                                                   A
 And when the world is through with us,
                        A7          D          D7
 We've got each other's arms.

You've got to win a little, lose a little,
And always have the blues a little;
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

Additional Lyrics:

You've got to sow a little, reap a little
And lose out on some sleep a little;
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

You've got to stand firm a little, bend a little
And be a real true friend a little;
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

When skies may not be fair for us,
And dreams just won't come true,
As long as we'll be there for us,
Love will see us through.

You've got to frown a little, smile a little
And go that extra mile a little;
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

You've got to coo a little, whine a little,
And even walk that line a little;
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

You've got to be strong a little, weak a little,
And turn the other cheek a little;
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

When troubles seem to multiply,
The future is in doubt,
Together, darling, you and I,
We can work it out.

You've got to ebb a little, flow a little
And, more than all else, grow a little;
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

BTW, one artist who had a major hit (if not THE major hit) with this song was Sophie Tucker (The Last Of The Red-Hot Mamas) in 1925. (So that 1926 copyright date may have been the copyright from a later arrangement.) (It was from sheet music with her picture on it that I got the lyrics and derived the chords I posted--although I simplified them a little from those posted at Guitar Guy.)

John Martyn recorded an excellent version of The Glory of Love. So that must make it a folksong, doesnt it´??

Here are my chords, I think that they work a lot better than the Guitar Guy chords, they are pretty close to Genie's, but marked measure for measure, so they might be a bit easier to play through--and the additional lyrics are swell Genie, you have a gift!!

D7||G G6 /Am7 D7/G G7/C Cm7/
G G6/Am7 D7/G G/D7 D7/
GG/D7D7/GG7/C Cm(7)/
G G6/Am7 D7/G G/D7 D7/
(bridge)
C C/Am7 Am7/ G D7/G G7/
C C/Cm7 Cm7/G E7/Am7 D7/

G G6/Am7 D7/G G7/C Cm7/
G G6/Am7 D7/G G/G G||

(The D7 is a pick-up--one measure between slash marks, play 4 counts or downstrokes for each measure, 2 for each chord--)

Thanks, Ted.

(For anyone who's confused, my name is Jeanene and my mudcat handle is "Genie.")

In case you were wondering, the chords I posted actually are in the right positions. That is, some chord changes at the end of a line occur before the first word of the next line.

Your chords look good, Ted. I'm sure the 6ths add depth to the musical background. The GG chords looked unnecessarily complicated to me.

That is just the convention for writing jazz charts, Genie--generally there are two chord changes per measure, so you write two chords per measure, even if they are the same chord--it eliminates the need for unnecessary thinking--the charts are blocked out, measure for measure so you don't need to know, hear, or even think about the melody to play through the changes--

Good convention, Ted. The notation system used in Rise Up Singing drives me crazy, BTW.

FWIW, I guess I read the sheet music wrong (could've been a kind of beat-up copy). The copyright date on this song is 1936, not 1926.

YouTube has recordings of THE GLORY OF LOVE by

Big Bill Broonzy, with some very nice guitar work

Jimmy Durante - a poor quality video probably taken from TV or Kinescope, but Durante, as always, is charming enough to make it worthwhile.

The Five Keys from 1951 – not quite doo-wop, but close.

Dean Martin also from TV

The Platters

Otis Redding

--and many others.
