Well, better late than never!

1: Collection: A large collection of CDs, tapes, minidisks, MP3s by email has built up in my office in San Diego. From this cornucopia of music I am putting together a set of selections representing all facets of the myriad Mudcat chorale.

2. Selection: In a table in the thread before this one, Section VII, I showed those preferences I had decided on to date, with a lot of TBDs. In addition a lot of songs came in on tape and still have to be captured digitally which I am doing slowly but surely.

3. Art work -- we have a pretty nice draft of the cover and volunteers standing by to finish the art work when the text and production list for each of the several CDs is readied.

4. Production: I am waiting to hear the results of Max' discussion with Dick about their preferences, but one storng contender is farming theproiduction to an online house such as Mixonics.

5. Distribution: Dick may take care of the orders processing, or we may work out some other way to do it -- this is TBD.

The long pole in the tent right now is me, I 'm afraid, because the real world keeps raising its ugly snout and preempting my time. But after mid-August I expect that will improve. Barky goes to college and some simplification of my job is forthcoming where I will get to shed some of my duties, thank Gawd. So our progress should pick up nicely by Fall.

Guess that's about it.

Very best,

A

Observant of you!

Well, Jed Marum signed on to send in some music! That's great news!

I had hoped to have the tapes-to-disk work done by now and I haven't, so essentially there are no other major new pieces of news! But the overwhump tasking from the 3D world which has been draining all my spare time is pretty close to being wrapped up, and this task is the very next priority. Nothing would make me happier than to get knee deep in music again.

I do apologize -- it's been a very lumpy few months for many reasons.

But you are all very much not forgotten, and thank you for the nudge!

Amos, my music is now on a smart card but I don't know how to get it into my computer to send to you. Can't I load it to Real Jukebox somehow and then send it? I don't know how to transfer the smart card to cassette and my CD burner is still not installed but Nathan has one in his computer. Any suggestions?

Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD VIII: Azure Morning Tunes!!
From: Amos

I assume the smart-card is a USB device of some kind. If so, the driver for it could be loaded on Nathan's machine and the file uploaded and burnt to CD on his machine. I don't think I can upload the data from a smartcard directly, although it depends on what it is. What is the device the smartcard fits into?

Okay gang. The overwhelming tide of 3D noise has started to decline, and I have a little time to do what i love instead of what i must. The daughter is holding her own nicely in her first away semester at college, the dragons at work have either been slain or gone off to more interesting victims, and the Mudcat CD has risen again to the top of To Do List 1,234,967!

NEWS: First, the trick of moving tapes to CD has been resolved with reasonably decent quality. Those who sent in their material on tapes are being transferred to digital form as we speak.

Second: ANY SUBMISSIONS FOR INCLUSION ON THIS CD SERIES MUST BE IN THE MAIL NO LATER THAN CLOSE OF BUSINESS MONDAY OCTOBER 6th without exceptions. The door is just gonna close, okay? I have been able to leave it open way over schedule because I have been forced into all this serious schedule slippage.

Third: I will be forming up playlists for the CDs once I have them all neatly in the library and backed up. I will publish a complete list. I will then be open for comments, corrections to any errors in fact, suggestions in matters of opinion, and blatant whingeing for a fixed period. Once that window is closed the lists will be finalized,

Fourth: The issue of logistics for production was last scene in dialogue (presumed to have beens tarted) between max and Dick. Soon as I know more I'll tell you all.

That's the current sityooayshun, folks...we're movin!

Motion has begun again after an unavoidable interruption, and marching ahead is we!! I do apologize for the delays but I just don't do Superman as well as I did in my younger years. **bg**

(Besides, he's really mean when he gets drunk, I am told!)

One thing I'm wondering... would it make sense to do an mp3CD for those of us who listen to music on the ol'computer?
That'd get more songs on a CD, though there would be quality loss... Otherwise there'll be quite a few audioCDs to make. We never definitively answered that, if I recall correctly.

You guys are a herd of bloody angels, no mistake!!

Thanks, everyone. I have spent the day working tranfers from mindisk and tape and trying to tweak sound files with buzzz so they sound like sound files without buzzz. Funny and trikly busines, but I learn with every file.

But we are definitely getting there. If the final CDs sound a notch less than pure commercial CD, blame it on my affecton for raw material...and my weakness for the heart of an unamplified, unfiltered, untrained, and unengineered folksinger singing his heart out for public consumption. Crackle and pop or no.

Love ya all,

A

Amos, that buzz was authentic fret noise - took me ages to get it to sound right!!!!

Personally, I'm happy for the collection to sound like raw material. I'd much rather that than an over-sanitised production.

Amos, I forget to tell you that I have a backing chorus of September crickets on my contribution (on your doorstep today?). So can you leave them on the track, please? Thanks!

No. Unfortunately, khandu's CD is not finished. What Amos has received is a rather raw recording of a rather raw live performance of one rather raw song.

Alas, I do not have any music on the web. Perhaps soon.

At the present rate, it seems I will be 60 before I finish my CD (not really that long!). But the day it is done, I will certainly post it on the 'Cat.

Also, on that day, I will fulfill my promise to send a copy to a particular Mudcat member (whose CD I listen to and enjoy often)! :-)

Thanks for the interest!

Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD VIII: Azure Morning Tunes!!
From: Amos

Sorry if I gave a false impression about a "CD" -- I meant the medium, not a "full CD of songs". However, my imnpression is that Khandu can do and is definitely worth waiting for.

As far as I know we are now in the "Sort and normalize" phase of the initial work plan I laid out so long ago. Although we are well behind schedule, we are definitely still within the budget -- meaning volunteer hours and postage only to date, plus the costs of a lot of disks and tapes distributed across all those who sent stuff. For which, my eternal gratitude!

I should be able to provide an initial breakout list soon for the CDs I am proposing. Meanwhile Mudcat Management is reviewing options on how to manage the logistics of production, payment and delivery. So we should hear more on that.

Right now it is looking like a series of four CDs, estimating about 80 minutes playtime per CD. WOW!! What a great concatenation of fine singing that is!! By the time you've heard it all once you'll have forgotten what the first cuts sounded like. And of course, as you get older, you forget more, faster. So in effect this one series is a lifetime supply of good music!!! How about that!! Wodda boggin!!

Pity we don't all have DVD players!! But we are on track and moving ahead as fast as discretionary time will allow.

So don't despair!! They SHALL be there!!

Warm regards,

A
