Medical Center Recalls Body Parts

By JUAN A. LOZANO

GALVESTON, Texas- A medical center whose handling of cadavers has come under FBI investigation said Tuesday that it is recalling body parts sent to research institutions around the country, warning they may carry the AIDS virus or other infections.

The University of Texas Medical Branch said records kept by a former employee are so poor that there is a chance the parts - including feet, knees and elbows - have been used in tissue transplants.

"We deeply regret this has happened. We make no excuses for it," said Steven Lieberman, associate dean for educational affairs.

The medical center ordered the recall because the unpreserved remains may not have been properly tested for hepatitis and HIV before they were shipped.

The remains are primarily used to train doctors in surgical techniques and are not intended for use in transplants. But the medical center said it could not be sure that ligaments, cartilage and other tissue was not used that way.

The medical center called the risk to public health "negligible and probably zero," but said it could not guarantee that transplant patients are safe from infection.

It urged researchers who received parts under its Willed Body Program between November 2000 and May 2002 to send the parts back.

For now, a list of the sites that received the body parts won't be made public because of an ongoing federal investigation of the Willed Body Program, the medical center said.

The parts may have been sent to as many as 60 research programs nationwide. The medical center began notifying the institutions this week, and it said researchers should protect themselves when handling the remains.

"With these precautions, the risks go way down," Lieberman said.

Lieberman said he could not account for how many parts had been shipped out during the 18-month period in question. He said the medical center is not legally required to test the parts for infectious diseases, but such testing is expected within the medical community.

The Willed Body Program received about 300 bodies a year that had been left to science. Typically, the cadavers are used to train medical students and for research. When doctors are finished with the cadavers, any remains are usually cremated and returned to the families.

The Willed Body Program was shut down earlier this year and is already under investigation by the FBI, which is looking into allegations that an employee sold donated remains and that donors' ashes were mingled.

The employee, Allen Tyler Jr., 56, worked in the program for 36 years before being fired May 9. He supervised the handling of donated cadavers and was responsible for shipping bodies and body parts.

Tyler, who has not been charged with any crime, has refused to comment and did not return a message Tuesday.

Medical center officials said they began detecting discrepancies in Willed Body Program records in March. The FBI began investigating in May.
Several lawsuits have been filed against the medical center by family members who lost the cremated remains of loved ones.

you can't catch the AIDS virus from a cadaver.

Are we sure of that Peg? AIDS is a virus and they can live a long time............unlike bacterium who need a live host. I saw this and was just appalled. What a world we live in.

Abracadaver, yew got AIDS? Kin yew spayull aych-eye-vee?

I can only imagine the "authorities" giving the briefing to the "troops" : This is the situation, men: Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to recover all, uh, well, as many of the alleged diseased body parts from cadavers as possible. Be certain that nobody knows what you are doing. Be very discreet. Leave no evidence or fingerprints behind. Gather the body parts as quickly as possible, and don't let the host of the diseased body part see you collecting it. Now, when the host is asleep is often the best time to collect the parts, but take the necessary precautions like having your night vision glasses on BEFORE you cut off the electricity to the host's house. After they have passed out at a bar is good, too. You'll find vouchers in your packets for taking the hosts to some of the more seedy bars where criminals hang out so that it is less likely that people will admit to having been there, and therefore ID you. Try to haul the hosts out behind the bar to avoid some of these pesky little problems like wittnesses. And for goodness sake, be sure you sterilize your machete before each use. We don't need any lawsuits over infections due to lack of proper sterilization procedures! And, men, don't forget to take ALL of your disguise this time like agent Jones did when that guy ID'd him because he forgot his moustache & beard, we don't want any body (sorry, men, no pun intended) . . .anyONE to recognize you guyz who were interviewed on 60 minutes after the last time the Dept. screwed up. And don't screw up this mission like those jokers who let the body parts be distrubuted in the first place. OK, everybody, let,s hit the streets!

Actually, AIDS is a virus that is extremely fragile and doesn't live outside of the human for any length of time, which is why you can't catch it from mosquitoes. So the chances of getting it from a body part that has DIED is slim to none, but a lot of this is shipped still living, so the virus would/could be fine.

Body parts shipped "still living"? How they DO that?

I really think this is panic-mongering. As mentioned above, the AIDS virus is quite fragile. You can't get it from casual contact unless it enters into the bloodstream (which is why you can't get it from a toilet seat but you could possibly get it from kissing). The article says the remains are "unpreserved" so in what way does this suggest anything that is "still living?"

The media loves gruesome stuff like this and after the crematorium debacle a few months' back, this sort of story is even more popular. Think about why the AIDS virus is mentioned in the first paragraph: a negligible risk, when other diseases are MUCH more likely, such as encephalitis...

To misquote Marc Antony!
The evil that men do lives after them. The good is oft interred with their bones...we hope!"

Did you hear about the two sewage workers who fell into a treatment tank ?
They were 'interred' together!

If the tissue was suitable for transplantation, it has to still be living. Which means they got it off the corpse after the patient had clinically "died", but before complete degradation of all tissue had set in. They chill the parts for transport, like they do in cases of heart transplants. If the part is capable of being used for transplantation, I'd say it has a good chance that, if the patient was HIV positive, the specimen has a chance of infecting the host. Perhaps a very miniscule one, but if they could guarantee that it was no risk at all, they would probably not be recalling body parts.
