09 Aug 02 - 06:31 AM (#762471) Subject: Anyone use DVD recorders? From: GUEST,JTT Has anyone here used any of the new DVD recorders? Which do you favour - DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, etc? Did the DVD disks you made play ok on your TV's DVD player? On other machines? What about the region coding? Is it a pain in the a? Did you do anything to get around it - or do you consider that wrong? |

You will learn how to use your computer for DVD copying....you will, most importantly, learn the process for breaking the alogorithems used by the manufactorers to attempt to prevent copying.

From: GUEST,JTT Thanks, Gargoyle, but I wasn't actually talking about copying DVDs onto the hard drive and re-recording them as VCD, or any of those kind of workarounds - I was asking about these new IDE drives you can plug in and use in the same way you use a CD-RW - in fact, they also write CDs. They seem to have two probs, though - they record disks ok but the disks won't play on 'legacy' systems (ie the glossy new one you just bought six months ago to watch DVDs on your TV), and they're region-blocked so they decide only to play or record DVDs from one particular region of the world. |

DVD+R } Both backed by Philips, Sony, HP, DVD+RW } Dell, Ricoh, Yamaha DVD-RAM } A cartridge based Recordable DVD developed by Samsung (I think) Most DVD-ROM units for computers cannot read any of the recordable DVD formats, but it's and evolving standard. If you wait another month or two you may have more options. If you want to record DVDs to work with a specific DVD player, I'd check the specs and see if it supports any of the writable formats. I hear that a lot of the Apex home players can play DVD-R and DVD-RW. And the Samsung DVD V1000 reads everything but DVD+RW and RAM. |
