Songs about fire

Subject: Songs about fire... need help
From: Branwen23

Hi, all. I'm working on a compilation cd of songs about fire for a special project. I need about ten more songs to complete my list. Here are the songs I have already:

We didn't start the fire
Disco Inferno (burn baby burn)
Fire down Below
Heaven's on fire
The fireman
Fire and Rain
Smoke on the water
Hotter than hell
Blaze of Glory
Beds are burning
Light my fire
Fire on the mountain
Fire on the bayou
Burnin' down the house
Great balls of fire
Hunka Hunka Burnin Love
Touch me, turn me on & Burn me Down
Smoke gets in your Eyes
Standing outside the fire
Burning for you
Smoke from a distant fire

I'm looking for songs that most people would recognize, such as classic rock, popular country, etc. Anything that could refer to fire, a house burning, smoke, etc.

You suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Branwen

I think it was Mark Graham who wrote a hilarious song called 'It Was on Fire When I Lay Down on It'. I'll see if I can find it.

I'm really looking for stuff that's pretty mainstream; I'll need to download the files for the cd from a program like Morpheus or Kazaa.

And this one should qualify...

O'LEARY's COW
Recorded by: Johnny Horton
Written by: Dave Stone, Ray Winkler & Leroy Morris

CHORUS

October eighteen seventy-one
That's when this great big fire begun
The windy city was a ball of flame
And O'Leary's cow was the one to blame.

The firemen fought for days on end
They could fight the fire but they couldn't fight the wind
The wind fanned the flames and it started again
And nobody knew if it ever would end.

She kicked up her heels without a hint
Kicked the lantern over and away she went
The world couldn't help but be amazed
How one little cow started such a blaze.

The rich and the poor were both alike
Fightin' and prayin' for their life
Then at last the Lord looked down
And He sent a little rain to the windy town.

The aftermath was a sight to see
The loss of life and property
The people said it was a shame
But O'Lear'y's cow still caught the blame.

CHORUS

and there's THE BROWN's

He Will Set Your Fields On Fire

and the OLDIE about The Schoolhouse Fire

The "Old Mother Leary" reference reminded me of one I heard when I was but a teenager:

"Late one night when we were all in bed,
Old Mother Leary took a lantern in the shed.
Cow kicked it over, and this is what she said,
"There'll be a hot time in the old time tonight!"

I just remembered a song that Teresa Brewer recorded back in the early 1950s called "The Moon Is On Fire." It's a kind of latin beat and I still think it's a pretty good song, as pop songs of that genre go. This may not help you in your quest if you're not familiar with the song, but I just thought I'd throw it onto the wood pile, as it were.

Burn Down the Mission (Elton John)

What's the traditional song..."Ladybug, ladybug, fly away home...your house is on fire and your children will burn." Always scared the heck outta me when I was a kid.

Lots o' good suggestions above; gotta add how much I love "Settin' the Woods on Fire" by Hank Williams. Mary Kay Place did a great version of it on her album as the country singer character on "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman." What was her name? Loretta?

He loved to burn down houses just to watch the glow,

My favorite arson blues was composed for my working draft of the Housing and Neighborhood Organizing Songbook after I remarked that there was lots of arson in evidence but no songs:

Original Words & Music by Paul Emery © 1982
Adapted by Charlie Ipcar - 1993

Arson?s Just Business

Baby, you won?t believe it,
How someone could come around;
Take our house,
Just burn it down;
Old landlord?s standing by the fire trucks,
Over there with the police,
Over here the kids are standing in a puddle,
Hell, it?s nighttime in the streets.

They all say they?re sorry,
But there?s nothing they can do;
Happens all the time, LA, Chicago,
New York, it?s nothing new;
They all got insurance
And that?s the lucky thing;
Ain?t no way to catch them bastards,
Come and done this thing.

Chorus:

They?ll burn down the whole damn city,
Get paid their share;
What the hell?s the difference, ain?t no reason
For us to be staying here;
Ain?t no jobs left,
Just booze, junkies and welfare;
Arson?s just business,
Business, it don?t care.

You know, this building,
Wasn?t worth much anyway;
You remember how the wind blew, Baby,
How the curtains you put up would sway?
Got so cold, sometimes,
We?d all sleep together in one bed;
Burnt up everything we had,
Thank God, no one?s dead.

When you come home, Baby,
We can drive on down the street;
Of course, by then all the ashes
Will be covered up with weeds;
The thing is, it really scares me,
All the hope and love that burnt up there;
Thirty years of our life,
We tried to raise a family there...

The songwriter, Paul Emery of Michigan whose house did catch fire and whose vintage Gibson guitar recovered from extensive third degree burns, had this to say about his song:

Losing your place is bad when it?s an accident but it?s especially hard to deal with if you know some fucker?s got paid to do it and that he?s just some minor pawn in the economic arrangement that?s responsible for you standing in the street.

Warm regards,
Landlady's Daughter
