He sings the "And isn't it crazy" verse last. Is there more to tell about the songwriter, and about the background story of this song? -Joe- |

As Stewie pointed out in his 13 August 02 post above, Barry was living in Hastings when he wrote "I once was a fisherman". I've been lucky enough to see Barry when he was performing with Robin in the 1970s, and solo when we booked him at Herga in the 1990s. Kitty |

17 Jun 11 - 03:27 PM (#3172024) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Once Was a Fisherman (Barry Dransfield) From: Sian H And Joe, The background to the song is the ban on fishing which applied strict restrictions on the quota of fish (mainly cod) caught in British waters. It had a detrimental impact on fishermen here in Hastings. People may remember hearing of the 'Cod Wars'around the time the song was written. |
03 Jul 11 - 06:09 AM (#3180606) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Once Was a Fisherman (Barry Dransfield) From: Ross Campbell The "Cod Wars" were to do with Iceland's unilateral extension of its claims to the grounds on its surrounding continental shelf. The chance of a negotiated settlement to allow continued British fishing presence in those waters was thrown away by the arrogance and stupidity of the supposed diplomats involved. The quota system which gave rise to this song and the effects it describes came much later, when overfishing by British and other fleets had virtually destroyed stocks in British waters. Ross |
