DAN PEYTON'S RIDE
(Allen Norton Leete - 1889)

At the warn-ing of dan-ger Pey-tron on his horse,
En-coun-tered the tor-rent, once a ti-ny rill,
through wa-ter and mire he tore a-long the street
shout-ing "run for your lives to the hill"
Run for your lives, make haste while you may;
The tor-rents from the dam on us fall;
But they laughed him to scorn,
or else thought him mad;
Not a score _ gave heed to his call.

Chorus:The horse and his ri-der do-ing mer-cy's work.
Sa-ving hu-man lives if they died;
But the flood o-ver-took and o'er whelm'd them on the bridge;
they per-ished like he-roes side by side.

But his work was to save; he kept up-on his way,
Un-daun-ted and fear-less, shout-ing with a will;
Through street af-ter street be-seech-ing not to stay,
but to "run for their lives to the hill"
Run for your lives, he ceased not to shout,
The del-uge com-ing swift as a gale
Mid the mist and _ foam his
heart_con-tin-ued stout,
in the sha-dow of death in the vale

Chorus:

But the del-uge swept down; a wall of wa-ter came,
Re-lent-less _ mur-d'rous, bent to drown and kill;
And Pey-ton with ven-om hunt-ing as for prey
It de-creed he should never reach the hill
Run for your lives, he ceased not to shout,
The del-uge com-ing swift as a gale
Mid the mist and _ foam his
heart_con-tin-ued stout,
in the sha-dow of death in the vale

Chorus:

Up a bank's slipp-'ry sides his snor-ting steed es-sayed
To ob-tain a foot-hold, but a-las in vain,
the de-luge o'er took them, side by side they laid
Im -mor-tal he _ -roes 'mid the slain.
"Run for your lives!" the e-cho _ rang
As the dead swept _ by on the flood
And the theme pierced a-loft while the an-gels sang
Of sal-va-tion through an-guish and blood

Chorus:
