Dear Masato,

Since it seems you have the lyrics of the "Sweet Child" album at hand, could you post here *PLEASE!!!* the lyrics of the following two songs :

"A Woman Like You" and "Sweet Child" !...(my favourites of this album!!!)

I would be EXTREMELY, ETERNALLY grateful !!! :-)

From: masato sakurai

Marie, here are the songs.

A WOMAN LIKE YOU
(Jansch)

I don't believe I have seen a woman like you anywhere
And I must admit that I can't see me making it into a dream
But if I had a magic wand to wave
I'd send a dove to catch her love
And I'd send a blackbird to steal your heart

But a broken heart won't cure my endless search, little girl
I'm going to fix a magic spell to weave on you, little girl
I'll fell the long grass to catch you in
I've found the orange too sweet in sin
Before this very moment eagerly

I'd rather wait at the door a thousand times, little girl
Than take a woman unto the heart of my soul
And if I catch you sleeping or lying unawares
I'll carry you off to my secret lair
And I'd bind your heart to my very soul

I don't believe I have seen a woman like you anywhere
And I must admit that I can't see me making you into a dream
And if I had a magic wand to wave
I'd send a dove to catch her love
And I'd send a blackbird to steal your heart

SWEET CHILD
(Cox/Jansch/McShee/Renbourn/Thompson)

You've been working so hard all day
Won't you take your rest?
You've been driving my blues away
Now and it is my turn
Come hide beneath my wings
Sweet child, it may not be so long

Well, I may be a-drinking hard
Like a fish downstream
And I could be riding high
Mark me floating by
And if the rain does fall
Sweet child, I would not let you drown

Well, I would not care to see me hunger within your eyes
I would not care to know where your heart does lie
I would try to trust my heart
But my eyes are maidenly
Sweet child, come to me now, let me take your hand
Well, I do not know you well, yet I tried so hard
Through four and twenty years
Sweet child, I still don't understand

Well, I've heard there are great men
Who could save our souls
With kind and gentle hearts
And love is their goal
I really want to know
Sweet child, who could shoot them down

And I would rather tear him down
With the sin in his life
For such is tears sublime, every mortal soul
I wonder does he yearn
Sweet child, I'll have to comfort him

And I once did see a child, she did sit and cry
Where has the pretty flower in the darkness gone?
In the summer you shall see
Sweet child, I guess it won't be long

Won't you lay yourself down to rest
Let your mind relax
And won't you cuddle into the pines
Of the valley we have passed?
Well, I may not be here long
'Cause I got a feeling to be gone

THANK YOU !!! THANK YOU !!!

How can I *EVER* thank you ???!!!

I second the thanks Masato. (Such was the diction of Beert Jansch when singing, by the way, that lyrics should have been a compulsory appendage to every edition of every Pentangle alburm.)

"how can I ever thank you Masato"? Simple. The rest of us have put a thread together for that exact purpose! (You may find it a bit crowded though - most of us have something to thank masato for)

Dear Masato,

I'm trying, these days, to gather as many lyrics from Pentangle as I can!...(quite a challenge; as I'm trying to get the exact words as performed by the band!) So far I've got 17 songs under the belt + 5 in the waiting - that is: with only a few words I can't make out!... One of them is "Sovay" where in the 4th verse, I can't get what's after "hanged" :

"And you'll be hanged_____ And you'll be hanged______for murdering me!"

Also in the 5th verse I can't get what's after "blush" :

"Which made him blush_____ "Which made him blush_____ like any rose"

So, if you can have a quick check in your "Sweet Child" album lyrics sheet, I would be very very pleased!

(Also, if it's not to much to ask, could you also post here the lyrics of the "Market Song" and "Turn Your Money Green" !!! PLEAAAAASE!!!)

:-) MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE!!! :-)

Subject: Lyr Add: SOVAY
From: masato sakurai

Marie, I copied all the lyrics from my sheet, where no word is written after the first "hanged."

SOVAY

Sovay, Sovay, all on her day
She dressed herself in man's array
With a brace of pistols all at her side
To meet her true love
To meet her true love
Or wished she might

As she was galloping on her brave
She met her true love and he did stand
"Stand and deliver, young man," she said
And if you do not
And if you do not
I'll shoot you dead

He delivered up his golden store
And still she craved for mountain more
The diamond ring that I see you wear
Oh, hand it over
Hand it over
And your life I'll spare

From my diamond ring I would not part
For it's a token from my sweetheart
You can be damned, you rogue, said he
And you'll be hanged
And you'll be hanged then
For murdering me

Next morning in her garden green
Young Sovay and her true love were seen
He spied his watch hanging from her clothes
Which made him blush, lads,
Which made him blush, lads,
Like any rose

Why do you blush, you silly young thing?
I vowed to have that diamond ring
'Twas I who robbed you all on that plan
So here's your gold, love,
Here's your gold and your watch and chain

I only did it for to know
If you would be a man or no
If you'd given me that ring, she said
I'd have pulled the trigger
Pulled the trigger and shot you dead

Masato ...... was this transcribed from the LP or were the lyrics provided??
I learned the song some years ago with the last line of the first verse as
away did ride
and the first line of the second verse as
As she was galloping o'er the plain
It certainly makes more sense that way.

There do seem to be some strange readings there; rather different from what I recall them singing (I don't have that record, so it was rather long ago!) I think they got that version from Bert Lloyd at some point, though they often didn't credit their sources.

...as although I've only suggested that you would just check and fill in the blanks of a couple of sentences in "Sovay", you've actually been well inspired to post all the lyrics of the song!... It surely gave me the opportunity to clarify a few other things here and there in the transcriptions!...Many thanks for that!!!

*PLEASE*, Don't forget also to post here the lyrics of the "Market Song" and of "Turn Your Money Green" (they both come from the same album!)... that is; when you've got the time of course...and only if you don't think that I'm seriously starting to ask too much of you !!! Cliff Haslam/Martin Carthy version of SOVAY is in the DT.

MARKET SONG

As I walk unto market
Each day I can hear them cry
Sweet apples, sweet oranges
Sweet apples, sweet oranges
Fresh, freshly sent for you out today
Come and buy them
Sweet apples, sweet oranges

All alone I walk with no one
Beside me would sooner buy
Sweet apples, sweet oranges
Sweet apples, sweet oranges
Walking through the stalls
I am amazed by them all
Come and buy them
Sweet apples, sweet oranges

Like a child my mind was a-wandering
Far from here across the sea
It's the sweet apples, sweet oranges
Sweet apples, sweet oranges
I hear, I hear the cries of the beggars
What to buy
Sweet apples, sweet oranges
Come and buy them

Through the forest I could see them
A-hanging there so ripe and red
Sweet apples, sweet oranges
Sweet apples, sweet oranges
Get up, get up, my man
You're not betted down, belong to you
Gotta buy them
Sweet apples, sweet oranges
Sweet apples, sweet oranges

TURN YOUR MONEY GREEN

Stick with me, baby, and I'll turn your money green
Stick with me, baby, and I'll turn your money green
Show you more money than the Rockefellers ever seen
When I was in Missouri, they would not let me be
When I was in Missouri, they would not let me be
Wouldn't let me turn until I came to Tennessee

Stick with me, baby, and I'll turn your money green
Stick with me, baby, and I'll turn your money green
Show you more money than the Rockefellers ever seen
If the river was whiskey, baby, and I was your girl
If the river was whiskey, baby, and I was your girl
I'd duck to the bottom
I never would come up

Baby, it's all right, baby, any old way you do
Baby, it's all right, just any old way you do
Someday you may want me
Baby, then I won't want you

Stick with me, baby, and I'll turn your money green
Stick with me, baby, and I'll turn your money green
Show you more money than the Rockefellers ever seen

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!

and... once again, if it's not too much to ask, it would be very sweet of you if you could post here *in your own time; when it suits you!!!* the following songs:

"In Your Mind" and "The Time Has Come" which, of course, are still part of the same album!

IN YOUR MIND

Sunlight through the morning cloud
In your mind, I can see
Sparrows wake and shake from sleep
In your mind, beneath the sun

Often I walk and run
In your mind, beneath the sun
There is no sign of woe
In your mind, all is quiet

Oh, the value could be mine
In your mind, like a fool
Searching for the true and wild
In your mind, you are free
Time to rest and reason with
In your mind, in your mind

THE TIME HAS COME

Oh, my babe, don't you know
The time has come for me to go
Tomorrow comes like yesterday
The autumn fades our love away

So, don't you think of me no more
I'm going to some far-off shore
And when I'm there maybe I'll find
Some other young man moves into my mind

Oh, my babe, don't you know
The time has come for me to go

I've just asked for the thread name change as you suggested, and hope it's going to be dealt with soon!...

Meanwhile, THANKS A LOT for your last posting!... Even if the "Japanese edition" transcriptions are not always 100% accurate, they still help me tremendously!

I think we are nearly through, now, with the "Sweet Child" album! (...unless you've got some Bonus tracks like on the CD release! :-)

So Masato, *when you feel like it* , could you do a (last?!) posting here of the remaining songs, which are (I believe) :

"I Loved A Lass" and "Moon Dog"

For my part, I'm posting now, hereafter,

"Watch The Stars", "No More My lord" and "I've got A Feeling"... so that you can only have a quick check, and tell me which sentences are wrong!... I'm trying to share your workload here! :-)

Looking forward to hear from you,

From: masato sakurai

Marie, here you are.

I LOVED A LASS

Oh, I loved a lass and I loved her so well
That I hated all others for eyes that sparkle
But now she's rewarded me well for all my love
She's a-goin' to be wed to another

When I saw my love to the church go
With bride and bridemaids she made a fine show
I followed her on with a heart full of woe
She's a-goin' to be wed to another

When I saw my love sit down to dine
I sat down beside her to the board and the wine
I drank to the lassie that should have been mine
She's a-goin' to be wed to another

And the men in the forest they asked it of me
Saying how many strawberries grow in the salt sea
I answered them back with a tear in my eye
How many ships sail in the harbour?

MOON DOG

He's a beggar on a street corner
To most passers by that's all he is
Playing a black pawnbroker
Moon dog is

But to me he's something special
As he sits alone a-playing his drum
If I play he's right here with me
Moon dog is

All you people who did see him
Won't you tell me what I misseed
By never seeing this son of rhythm
'Cause that's what Moon Dog is

I'm glad this thread is reopened, as I missed it originally. I was about to make the correction in first verse

'of her that spak ill' but Sumer got there first.

I also love the last verse alhough not sure that I understand it any better than when I used to sing it in clubs 25 yr ago.

What a collection of great songs and memories. I will have to dust off my copy of Sweet Child which is definately British rather than Japanese. Might even dust off my song book and sing a few again.

Found this thread when I was looking for the words of "I loved a lass"

I have been listening to Ian Campbell's version of this song recently and he sings five verses rather than the four given above.

The fifth verse is:

Go dig my grave both wide and deep
And cover it o'er with flowers so sweet
And I'll turn in to take a long sleep
And maybe, come time, I'll forget her.

I feel this verse adds to the song and makes it feel complete.

BTW, I was somewhat surprised to find that this song was not in the DT database.

There are several versions of the song (Roud 154) in the DT. There are more in the Forum. See thread  Lyr & Tune add: The False Bride  for a list; there are probably others by now. It is fairly old, and like many traditional songs is found under several different titles.

Malcolm, thanks for the info. Some interesting variants there, though the theme remains the same.

It is fairly old, and like many traditional songs is found under several different titles.

I appreciated that it was a traditional song, but the second part of your statement highlights a problem when searching for the words of a traditional song - that of varying titles.

I followed your link and among the many variants, I found that I had two in books on my bookshelf, if I had only realised it.

'Titles', as Dick Greenhaus has often said here, 'are a snare and a delusion'. Often they vary; often people post lyrics here and elsewhere under mis-spelled or even completely imaginary names. Always search, if the title you expect doesn't get you very far, for a phrase or phrases from a text you already know. That will almost always get better results, and clues to further examples.

Lyrics "I loved a lass" correction

Hi, I think that the first verse should read

"I loved a lass, and I loved her sae well
That I hated all other o' her that spak ill"

15 Mar 08 - 03:44 PM (#2289210)
Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET CHILD (from Pentangle)
From: GUEST,John

I'm sorry I shoul have noticed the I loved a lass had already been corrected.

I'd like to submit the following version of Sweet Child, I've make a few corrections which I think are correct. There is only one verse that I'm really not sure of but I think that my version is better than the previous one.

And I've thought about a man
With us in his love
Who sheds his tears upon every mortal soul
I wonder does he yearn
Sweet child, for death to come for him

The first three lines are very unclear. "Love" in the second line could be "life", but doesn't make much sense to me. I've tried to isolate both Bert's and Jacqui's voices. I'm not absolutely sure if the last doesn't end "for death to comfort him". I prefer "come for him".

I think this follows quite well after the previous verse, perhaps as a reference to Christ, although theologically I'm not at all sure what a priest would make of Christ 'yearning for death'.

Sweet Child

You've been working so hard all day
Won't you take your rest?
You've been driving my blues away
Now it is my turn
Come hide beneath my wings
Sweet child, it may not be so long

Well, I may be a-drinking hard
Like a fish that swims
And I could be riding high
Mark me floating by
And if the rain does fall
Sweet child, I would not let you drown

Well, I would not care to see untruth in your eyes
I would not care to know where your heart does lie
I've try to trust my heart
But my eyes are pale and weary

Sweet child, come to me now, let me take your hand
Well, I do not know you well, yet I tried so hard
Through four and twenty years
Sweet child, I still don't understand

Well, I've heard there are great men
Who could save our souls
With kind and gentle hearts
And love is their goal
I really want to know
Sweet child, who could shoot them down

And I've thought about a man
With us in his love
Who sheds his tears upon every mortal soul
I wonder does he yearn
Sweet child, for death to come for him

And I once did see a child, she did sit and cry
Where has the pretty flower in the darkness gone?
In the summer you shall see
Sweet child, I guess it won't be long

Won't you lay yourself down and rest
Let your mind relax
And won't you cuddle into the night
I will guide your path
Well, I may not be here long
'Cause I got a feeling to be gone
