25 Aug 02 - 05:09 PM (#771399) Subject: RE: Scotland, ae sae braw? From: GUEST,Griff Whoops, I pressed return before I'd typed a message! Anyway, I'm looking for lyrics for a song with the above name. A work colleague who knows I'm into traditional music has been asking me if I know this song which her grandfather used to sing apparently. I think it's probably from the music hall tradition and the fragment which she remembers is:
My heart is ae in Scotland though I'm so far awa' Take me back amongst the wild woods, Take me back amongst the glades, Take me back amongst my ain folk, That's aye sae dear tae me. Does anyone recognise it and know the rest? Thanks, Griff |
25 Aug 02 - 06:11 PM (#771420) Subject: RE: Scotland, ae sae braw? From: Jim McLean It's called MY AIN FOLK and can be found in the DigiTrad and the phrase is Scotland aye sae braw, 'aye' meaning always. Jim Mclean |

From: Teribus Scotland, Scotland, scotland ae sae braw, My heart is ae in Scotland though I'm so far awa' Take me back amongst the wild woods, Take me back amongst the glades, Take me back amongst my ain folk, That's aye sae dear tae me. Unless this is an introduction it doesn't seem to fit the tune for My Ain Folk.

26 Aug 02 - 04:18 AM (#771613) Subject: RE: Scotland, ae sae braw? From: Jim McLean I'm afaraid I jumped in too quickly with my Ain Folk. Scotland Aye Sae Braw is a different song and I can hear it in my head. I'll work out the lyrics and post them later if someone doesn't do it first. The end of the verse says Sae dear tae me, say dear tae me, that's aye sae de-e-ar tae me. There's also a few words ' my ai-ain wee-ee hoose' Pretty maudlin stuff. Jim McLean |
26 Aug 02 - 07:15 AM (#771653) Subject: ADD: Bonnie Scotland (McNab) From: Jim McLean Got it! It's actually called BONNIE SCOTLAND and was written by someone called MCNAB, published by Kerr's Music. I actually recorded it years ago with Roddy McNeil. BONNIE SCOTLAND (McNab) [The chorus is the first part:] Bonnie, Scotland, Scotland aye sae braw, My heart is back in Scotland though I am far awa', Take me back among the wildwood tae view the rowan tree, Tae wander by oor ain wee hoose, That's aye sae dear tae me.
Bonnie Scotland I adore thee,
Chorus:

Bonnie Scotland I adore thee, Though I'm far across the sea, Still when loneliness creeps o'er me My thoughts fly back to Thee. Oh in fancy I can see them more, Those bonny heather braes, And dream about my childhood there, Brings back sweet, happy days. Bonnie Scotland, Scotland aye sae braw, My heart is back in Scotland though I am far awa', Take me back among the wildwood and view the rowan tree, Tae wander by oor ain wee hoose, That's aye sae dear tae me. Dear tae me, Sae dear tae me. Oh, I long to wander o'er her braes, And ramble through the glens; To see the bonnie bluebell (row?) Oh Nature's lovely gem; And oh, to hear the neighbors (?) sweetly sing her ???? Oh, take me back to Scotland ?? The land I love sae dear. As you can see, I had some problems with this, so I've marked it as "in progress" instead of "ADD." This is from the John Allan CD, Sae Dear Tae Me, available on Spotify. |
