A warning in the public interest, to practical jokers: some people have no sense of humor! A case in point...

MAN ACCUSED IN WEDGIE CASE
The Associated Press

LOWER SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. Aug. 26 — A man accused of trying to kill a friend who gave him a "wedgie" will stand trial on an attempted murder charge, a judge ruled.

Daniel Strouss, 19, was attending a Phish concert last year when Eric Kassoway sneaked up behind him and yanked up his underwear, according to testimony at a hearing Thursday. Strouss, of Richboro, held a grudge for months before shooting Kassoway on June 12, authorities said.

On the night of the shooting, Strouss drove to Kassoway's home and waited until Kassoway came home, then shot him in the arm and leg, authorities said. Kassoway nearly died from loss of blood.

Strouss' attorney, Al Cepparulo, said he did not dispute the prosecution's version of events. "This is a tragedy for the victim. All I can say is my client is going through therapy," he said last week.

I've been tempted. Especially when the "wedgie" was so enthusiastic that I had nausea

Some insults should be punishable by, at least, an invitation to the field of honor at dawn. Too many bits of nastiness are ignored. Of course, exsanguination is too good for practical jokers--they tend to start light-headed.

Yeah, EBarnacle; although I'd probably vote against it if it ever came up, it occurs to me that if the dueling tradition were ever resurrected, people would probably be a whole lot more polite to each other.

Nice to correspond with another epee fencer. I will be teaching my son to use firearms safely next Summer, too.

You colonials are very odd. I think I've got the gist of this "wedgie" thing. I would suggest you don't try it here in the North of England, as you're more than likely to get sparkled. I am fortunately immune as I don't wear trolleys (trolleys = grundies, shredies). All the best PP.

PP - just sprayed my Licorice Allsorts over the screen at your use of 'sparkled'. Shrewsbury is an altogether more genteel place where bums are permanently clenched making wedgies nigh on impossible!

A definition of "wedgie", from this site: http://www.odps.org/slangw.html

wedgie n. Humiliation where the underpants are pulled sharply upwards from behind, causing them to wedge themselves tightly up the victim's arse-crack.

Variations:
* Pure wedgie: The victim is only wearing underpants when the attack occurs, thus inflicting a much greater amount of embarrassment than normal.
* Super wedgie: Pure wedgie but with the assailant then grabbing the crotch of the victim's underpants (from behind as it is exposed) and continuing to pull, resulting in the victim's genitals being revealed. (This is particularly embarrassing if the victim is not quite flaccid.)
* Wedgie war: All-against-all with lots of ganging up, normally in a swimming pool. A good attack is considered to be when the victim is lifted out of the water by his swimming togs to at least his knees. (Note that this activity can be very deleterious to the well-being of swimming togs.)
* Wedgie-proof: The victim's underpants are so stretchy that the wedgie doesn't hurt, or they are wearing Speedos, which tend to just stretch instead of heading painfully for the buttcrack. Can refer to the person or the apparel.
* cf. scanting USA, variations from NZ

...Okay, now it's my turn: what exactly is "sparkled" in the context in which PP is using the term?

Someone has been "sparkled" if they have been rendered unconscious by a heavy blow to the head. Not to be confused "smartened up good style" which does not require any concomitant loss of conciseness. All the best PP.

Here's another Blue Clicky about wedgies.

But, more to the point, what was the young man doing wearing underwear at a Phish concert in the first place? Or is it just the young women who eschew undies at jam-band concerts? Hoola-hoops and lack of undergarments do create some very interesting jigglies!

Guest asks: "What was the young man doing wearing underwear at a Phish concert in the first place?"

Hmmm... that's a point. Obviously, this young man was exhibiting signs of antisocial behavior long before he shot his friend. ':^/

So it's a deliberate form of hungry bum then....?

'Hungry bum' being an affliction that affects most people at some time of their lives. The underwear is gathered into the butt crack by the action of walking, and forms an uncomfortable wadge, removed by the action of 'arse picking', like nose picking but at the other end. The effect is as if the arse had decided to be the top end of the digestive tract for a change.

It sometimes occurs when the elastic becomes saggy and loose, or if a particular pair of trousers of synthetic material are worn with chuddies of a similar fabric.
