I just thought it would be a good place to put all the great moments

Meeting Ali and Geoff and making friends
Re- meeting Alan and Ann and Theresa(don't dare use that song) and Bill, Hazel, and Noreen and Alan. Meeting Joe and Susan and Dick. All my friends at the Tap, All my friends at the Endeavour. Singing lots of song I knew, and hearing lots I didn't.
Enjoying a barbeque on wednesday, sat with Maggie and Les. The saddest thing is knowing that it will be 51 weeks till the next time
There are also peple I met briefly that I dearly want to make contact with. If it takes till next year, well that might just have to do.

My message to all you over the pond, is to get yourselves over here for next year if at all possible. Just ask Susan, Dick and Joe - its worth it.
And for all the people that I have not mentioned - I loved meeting you too. I just did not have enough time. I remember saying to Maralyn that I would find time to talk and catch up - but it did not happen - sorry
Jim, Jude. Rob. Ken, Brien, Bren..............I love you all and cant wait until we meet again,


So whats happening in the near future......someone let me know. And if you are reading this and feel I have forgotten about you - just e-mail me and let me know.

Meeting friends old and new, playing with the likes of Johnny Handle and Tom Napper. Making friends with Maggie Boyle and generally having a laugh. (name dropping I know but what the hell they're my memories)

But most of all spending time with Jo-Anne :-)

Can't wait untill next year.

next trip out for me will be either The Heart of Scotland Festival in Aberfeldy around 15th sept or Otley latter in the month depending on finances etc.

My festival career is being somewhat curtailed by work commitments and I don't even think I will be around for Hull Sea Fever unless I can muster up some time on Sunday morning. I really must get a life! Can't make Otley either which is a real bummer -I love that festival!!!

I had a smashing time. Made new friends and met up with old ones. This Whitby virgin has got her heather so will be back in approximately 50 weeks time.

Beats the Isle of Wight any day dunt it Vectis. Ah the blooming heather is all over my blooming flat. We up at Alfleda all agreed it was one of the best so far, some of the harmonies in the Tap were awesome and Ken, Jude and Me doing the 'weigh heigh' in that song about the robbers 'the Cagwoth Athem' or whatever it's called. Roll on next year and hope to meet those who'll be at Bromyard and Otley

Lovely to hear from you Pat - the week in that wonderful house in Whitby was great, wasn't it? Great food (courtesy of you!), amazing singing, loads of alcohol (the photos say it all!), and lovely people. Just hope we can get the same place next year (fingers crossed!) We had a super week, and still telling everyone all about it - probably boring them to tears!

Geoff and I will be in Hull by Friday evening, but Theresa and Bill are at Fylde. Hope to see many of you there - if not, see you all soon, hopefully. Ali

PS Got a good picture of you on the Tuesday evening in the house Pat, when you truly became a floor singer (well, almost!!!!)

Whitby was wonderful! I fitted in whistle/harmony singing w/shops, ballad and folk club sessions, & a variety of concerts. Best of all, my 'I Spy' list of 'catters grew rapidly, and I managed to sing/play in half-a-dozen pubs. The Dolphin a RHB and the T&S were the best. Hope to see some of you at Sea Fever this w/e

Patrish as someone has pointed out Otley is 20th-22nd Sep and I'm going for the first time this year (it usualy clashes with Bromyard). As Les says it must be a big fitting T-Shirt ( a marquee perhaps ?). Will it go with the new trousers my ex - gert brought me back from the US they're sort of silvery white with coloured pool balls all over and no volume control.

If any of you are free on Saturday October 19th we're having a day of singing in Saddleworth at the Conservative Club in Uppermill.If you've ever been to the festival you'll know that one of our best venues is the Tory Club because of the stewards, Arthur and Mary. They're retiring in October (hope we get as good ones next year!), so we're giving them a farewell party, and it seemed appropriate to do it with a singaround upstairs / session downstairs as they love the atmosphere. Don't think there's anything else on that weekend (?) so it would be great to see some of our friends again.If you've never been over our way, give me a call and I'll give you directions. Ali

Having left the uk 18 months ago to take up work in the NZ I have read the Whitby thread with a combined sense of nostalgia and amusement. You lucky folk - ! Our local *folk* club here in NZ ran a celtic theme night (somewhere near St P's day) and they managed to go for 3 hours without singing one Irish song or playing a trad. tune. I can't remember them playing a Scottish one for that matter, either. Plenty of Neil Young and Bob Dylan though. As an elitist folkie (grin - smirk) who has somewhat eschewed the Dubliners song repertoire for over 30 years (except for some great instrumentals- listen to their version of The Acrobat) I am now eating up their words in some hope (vain) hope of getting a sing song going. And I am a bloody banjo player!!

It was great to meet Dick and Susan again, and Joe for the first time- isn't it odd how people don't always look like you imagine they will - I don't really know what i thought Joe would be like, but the reality is a lovely man. I managed to put a lot more faces to names whilst having a great time at the festival. Roll on next August!

I stuck a tune to it and sang it before Whitby Week was out. Coming back from a session just now it struck me that the tune I've used is reminiscent of a hymn tune - . Brendan Behan used it is the Hostage. (The Churches One Foundation or O Jesus Christ Remember) Not exactly the same, but reminiscent I think. (But I'm notorious for thinking tunes are basically the same tune when other people think they are totally different.

But if you've got a tune, Mrs Duck, it might well be just as good for it or better. I'd love to hear it.

I think I may have missed a lot of people because I tended to drink at the Plough rather than the Tap and Spile, when I wasn't climbing hills to get to other venues. And I got a season ticket. Met a fair number of Mudcatters anyway, including Joe, Dick, and Susan

I've put it up on my song website anyway, with chords - Whitby Coming Home. Running it through to put in the chords, I decided maybe it doesn't sound that much like the hymn tune after all. Anyway, I'll likely stick a RealAudio sound file up sometime. (But if anyone ever wants to sing one of my songs, don't worry about changing the tune around if you like yours better, or it fits your voice easier.)

Memories; The children's festival orchestra busking at the bandstand and their playing in the parade...all the lovely people who attended my contemporary poetry writing workshop and wrote so well... the Thursday session in the Plough with the Custards and Selbies....an hour of peace in the tai chi workshop....food in the Duke of York... friends I meet too rarely....crying at Wild Mountain Thyme.

Mouldy; good to meet you properly, too. No doubt we'll meet again, having mutual friends. Whitby's like that - all dashing about with little pockets of peace. The tai chi was one of the best workshops I've attended, so I'm thinking of finding a group near home.

For many years now we have said that we no longer particularly go to WFF for the music but to meet old friends and friends we have yet to meet. The session we had in the Plough with the McShane & Custard Gang was a wonderful memory to me, of folk music at it's best open to everyone of all ages. I was thinking of doing a biy of Rapper next year but this Tai Chi sounds fun what is it? Keith

And back to Whitby.....

I think I manifested something as we were about to leave, and I don't think I'll forget this in a hurry! We'd packed our car, case in first, instruments on top, garland heather, assorted bags etc - loaded to the gunnels. On the road by the car was a seagull feather, which I picked up and passed to Chris. He'd hardly had chance to take it off me before being seagull-shat upon. I couldn't find a tissue for him because I was crying, laughing. He had to go and buy another tee-shirt.Naturally we went to buy a lottery ticket before we came home, but it's not true, what they say about IT being for luck!

That's quite consistent with that idea I had in my song about seagulls really being the spirit of old sailors. Old sailors can have a rough sense of humour.
