Palio races are held throughout Italy, but the one in Udine is the ONLY one for female riders. It is much more genteel than the famous one in Siena. It is also a festival of arts, and the first few times we went there was traditional music and dance from various countries. We performed on the main stage as a duo called Pavane - which is where I got my Mudcat name. Last year, my daughter was one of the riders, and won her race - pictures on the web site. Takes a lot to race thoroughbreds bareback! Due to financial constraints, the event is much smaller this year, just two days instead of 4, so it will be held on Sat 7th and Sunday 8th. |

"The folk songs of the Piedmontese tradition are severe and sad, more narrative than lyric and often draw on historical events; dance tunes are cheerful and quick. The traditional musical instruments are the hurdy-gurdy, the accordion, the bagpipe, the mandola, the violin, several plucked instruments as well as a lot of flutes." I hope this thread grows some legs. Last June I met Beppe Gambetta at Old Songs. He told me of an Italian web site that compares to (he said) Andy's Front Hall. He gave me the address and I looked it up. It has plenty of music on it. Unfortunately I do not have the address here on this computer. It may be at home. Let me check there and I will post it here tomorrow. |
