I'd try Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, perhaps?    Of perhaps "Til There Was You" would capture the moment nicely...

This always seemed perfect for a second wedding, but I'm not sure about a dad dance, see what you think...

Autumn Wedding

Music: Peggy Seeger
Words: Peggy Seeger and Irene Scott

Strike up the music, the fiddlers are waiting,
Strike up the music, the dance is beginning.
The dancers move round in a circle together,
Love is preparing an autumn wedding.

Two circles form and partners are changing, They smile and touch hands and part without knowing that
Love is preparing an autumn wedding.

Walking and talking and dancing together,
No mention of love, no word of forever;
Two birds on the wing, wheeling and turning,
Love is preparing an autumn wedding.

A full life has taught him the price of tomorrow,
A full life has taught her to lead as she follows;
Both of them seasoned yet supple and bending
Love is preparing an autumn wedding.

Two rivers turn and flow into one,
The ocean lies waiting,it gleams in the sun;
Deep In the wood a wild flower blooms,
Passion unfolds in the bright afternoon.

It's never too late,it's never too early
To sing and make music, to dance and make merry;
The circle of life is wheeling and turning,
Love is preparing an autumn wedding.

Written for the wedding of Alexia Smith and Mike Seeger, 8/26/85.

UGH!! I don't know what happened on the second verse. It should be.

Two circles form and partners are changing
As they move round, two strangers are facing;
They smile and touch hands and part without knowing that
Love is preparing an autumn wedding.

Hope that makes more sense....

My stepdaughter loved dancing with her father to the Saturday night dance from Rodeo.

Don't you know a musician who could knok out a waltz on commission? Local fiddler round here did a lovely one for the Chairman of our local folk clubs Twentieth anniversary

"Love Walked In" by the Gershwins and on that same hopeful note is their "Our Love is Here to Stay". Two of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard. If you're looking for something a bit more folky how about the waltzes "Hector the Hero" or "My Own House". congratulations, vl

Roisin: I wrote the following, "Rebecca's Reel," about my daughter's upgrowing (her name's Accacia, but the tune it's set to is "Rebecca's Reel," a lovely piece in A-modal by the dulcimer player Lucy Sollogub. I think there's some way to improvise about any girl's name into the lyrics.) I thought I might play it or dance to it at her wedding, though she has assured me that will never happen. We'll see. Played slowly enough, I suppose you could do a foxtrot to it. If you're interested, drop me a PM and we'll figure a way to get the tune to you.

1. First her left foot, then her right foot
First her left foot, the-n her right
Tak-ing steps in white, white boot-ies
Al-rea-dy danc-ing Re-bec-ca's Reel.

2. Try-ing out her grand-ma's dress-es
Wob-bl-ing in au-n-tie's shoes
First steps in high heels are trick-y
Reb-ec-ca's reel can ma_ke you smile.

Cho: She's the danc-er, she's the dance
She's sway-ing to the song of life
Glo-ry to its puls-ing rhyth-ms
Dance your dance, Rebecca's Reel

3. On the side-walk to her friend's house
Skip-ping lines and ski-pp-ing cracks
Run-ning in her dirt-y sneak-ers
Still she's danc-ing Re-bec-ca's Reel

4. In the dis-tance, bells are chim-ing
A mel-o-dy that's hers alone
Where's my love-ly danc-er go-ing?
Re-bec-ca's Reel will sho-w the way.
Chorus

If you want something folky how about The Roseville Fair? I love Chris Wood and Andy Cutting's version. It's so lovely.

THE ROSEVILLE FAIR
(Bill Staines)

Oh, the night was clear, and the stars were shining
And the moon came up so quiet in the sky.
And the people gathered 'round and the band was a'tuning.
I can hear them now playing "Coming Thru the Rye."

And we danced all night to the fiddle and the banjo.
Their drifting tunes seemed to fill the air.
So long ago, but I still remember
When we fell in love at the Roseville Fair.

You were dressed in blue, and you looked so lovely,
Just a gentle flower of a small town girl.
You took my hand, and we stepped to the music.
And with a single smile, you became my world.

We courted well, and we courted dearly,
And we'd rock for hours in the front porch chair
Then a year went by from the time that I met you
And I made you mine at the Roseville Fair

So here's a song for all of the lovers,
And here's a tune that they can share
May they dance all night to the fiddle and the banjo
The way we did at the Roseville Fair.

Without gettting too Schmaltzy...

How about 'When I Grow Too Old to Dream'...

Canadian Tenor John McDermott does a creditable cover on his 'A Time to Remember' CD...

Congratulations,

M.

Hard to believe that there isn't a nice waltz out there along the lines of "If He Breaks Your Heart, Your Dear Ol' Dad Will Break His Face"... or maybe there is and I just haven't heard it...
