At 11:00 my son Matt and I do an acoustic set which ranges from Rockabilly to Elvis Costello (Matt sings the Costello stuff). I'm going to ask Jerry to do a song with us (I guess I ought to tell him) in our set. Susette and Matt and I will have been there from 3 to 5 setting up the sound and doing a sound check. I don't imagine we'll make it back until about 8:30. |

But, folks it's pretty rare these days for Jerry to be doing a solo show ala all those good Stamford Museum years----Folk Legacy Folk Fests etc. etc. As grand as his shows are as a part of the Gospel Messengers, don't miss this chance to request songs from the 2 Folk Legacy albums. The plans for this weekend as far as I know are that there'll be a sing around after my concert Friday night. My wife and I are looking forward to meeting Bobert and P-Vine before the concert and having dinner at the Royal Mile, and maybe there'll be a chance for some casual song-swapping there. By the time the third set of the night is over, I won't be driving a pumpkin(or was it a Porsche.) I'll be one. You know, us old folks run out of steam after a couple real long days with a drive back the next day. I'd sure like to hear everyone, and am looking forward to that Friday night after the house concert. I'm afraid I'll be too washed out after three sets at the Royal Mile, though. If everyone else wants to, that's great. Any reason is a good one for getting together to sing.
Actually, Bobert, I'm exaggerating. I've never driven a pumpkin. Drove a lot of lemons in my day, though. :-) Jerry |

Jerry and Ruth got to chez Fortunato on Friday afternoon and Jerry and I started talking...pretty soon it was time to go to the house concert. We loaded them up and Susette drove us down to Kensington to the O'Malleys. Jerry and Ruth settled into a side room and he tuned and warmed up. Folks started arriving, I won't same names but many mudcatters and DC people. Jerry did two great sets, with everyone singing on the choruses. (Even, as Jerry said, when they didn't know the song.) but they seemed to know all the songs. My favorite of that night was Ten pound radio. Jerry sounded grand. His stories and intros were fascinating as well. During the breaks folks got to know Ruth who hadn't met her (clearly the best dressed woman in the room) and there was great communion. After the concert there was a grand singaround. Back home the Rasmussens called it a night. Saturday morning I put on the coffee and Jerry and I started talking...after a while I lead them down to Wheaton where they parked near the Royal Mile and caught the metro and went downtown to see the electric lights and stuff. Back after a sound check Jerry and Susette and I started talking...later Jerry and Ruth headed down to the 'Mile early and had dinner with Bobert and PVine and Fred and lots of folks. Jerry did the first set, wowed the crowd with guitar playing and story telling and singing (and they came in on the choruses). Much of the crowd came from the house concert aa well, having a Rasumussen Weekend. After Jerry, we did The Shiver Show, and in the third set Jerry and Ruth had a chance to hear my son Matt hat up my rockabilly and blues on the guitar and his Elvis Costello and originals. We had a greaaaaaaaaaaaaat night. Sunday morning we got up early and I made coffee and Jerry and I started talking... Well as you see there was A LOT of talking, a lot of music and much good fun. BillD took lots of pictures so I hope he'll put some up on the mudcat or somewhere so we can all see them. Great weekend, and next friday is KYTRADs National Heritage award concert. Mudcatters (and those still un-fished) you'd better check your pulse. My wife and I had a chance to meet old friends, and make many new ones. (If you don't know it, a new friend is someone you meet in D.C. for the first time, an old friend is someone in D.C. you've met twice.) It was a great treat to meet Bobert and Pea-Vine (who was actually not christened with that name.) Don't be fooled by his e-mails, folks, Bob (ert) is a very refined, extremely well-spoken gentleman. No Hillbilly spoken there. :-)
When it comes to hospitality, I don't know if anyone can top Chance and his wife Susette. But Judy and Dennis Cook, T.J. and Julie O'Malley and Bill D and Ferrara can certainly give them a run for their money. From what I hear from Greg Stephens, you'd have to throw Bobert and hid wife into the mix and it would be a photo finish. My wife and I hope that we get the opportunity to return the favor one of these days.
Having run a concert series for many years, I know what it takes out of you to make performers feel at home. Why, I felt so much at home at Chance and Susette's that I almost took out the garbage...
Sunday morning, when I came down stairs, it brought back memories of memorable visits at Sandy and Caroline Paton's and the verse to a song I wrote came floating back:
"Down stairs, no one is waking
Though the clock on the wall says a quarter to eight
And the banjo and fiddle still lean by the wall
With songs of their own that just wait to be played
And it's almost like being back home

However, after spending the entire day at the rather spectacular "Scottish Weekend" at the Renaissance Festival in the Annapolis, Md area , I definitely needed that emergency dose of double-expresso as my firends and I were leaving at day'send. Needless to say it was a joy to then just sit down and chat-up with this gathering at the Royal Mile while taking 2 pints of Bass Ale to take the buzz off the expresso, but when the stage came to life I was, once more ,in the presense of craftsmen troubadors in the finest of traditions. Jerry is so wealthy of experience & life lessons expressed in stories and song that one gets the impression that the half-dozen nuggets he imparted to us were just samples of the motherlode he had already mined and was only too glad to share. Such a warm and wise and seasoned presense like some Connecticut Yankee in Shelby Foote's shoes. Then came Chance's sets which proves the Ross Perot formulae of "..just surrounding myself with the best quality people" and launching into copious doses of lively feast of accoustic Country Western/Rock-a-billy/Folk/Swing that just beams. Chance's stage presense is just plain one of asking the musical question: " If y'all ain't hear to share in a good time with the music then what's wrong with you, son?". He's so at home with his music that one could hardly resisit when he declares "Open house". First set was reminded one of a "Prarie Home Companion" ...Southenr-style. Call it a Viginia Mountain Home Companion with fine accompaniment by one Suzette with singing harmony and obviously holds her own ground with autoharp and banjo. Then came Chance's 2nd set which took one in yet a 3rd direction where his son Matt showed, through his guitartistry , the serious time he's put in listening to the crafstmen of the guitar and paid close attention. the prqactical result were these well done accoustic leads that took my attention because it was just so rewarding to actually witness one member of the next generation taking guitar craft seriously. One don't get that good without a good mentor teaching by example and instilling how much of a labor of love music-making is. Well done Chance. To quote from that radio station owner character from "O Brother, Where Art Thou" ; " That was some mighty fine pickin' and a-singin'". T'was a full day of fine music and I'd do it again in a heartbeat . |

I told Chance that Saturday night was a revelation because even though I've heard him and Susette do a couple of songs in their living room, I hadn't heard them do their show. Talk about a time warp! And just watching Chance do his modified Uncle Dave Macon/Dwight Yoakum moves was a pleasure all it's own. I can honestly say that I have never seen anyone so THOROUGHLY enjoy performing as Chance. And Susette is the perfect compliment to him. Made me feel like I was back in the hills.
Matt is someone you will hear more from. He is an exciting guitarist... not too many guitar players who can excite me any more. And, while his style is completely different from his Father's, he sings with just as much intensity and honesty. They make a wonderful combination. Like peanut butter and jelly... the whole is much more than the sum of the parts. It was an honor for me just to be part of the show...
And, I enjoyed meeting you, Taliesn. I've seen your home in Spring Green, Wisconsin, but never had the pleasure of meeting the owner.. Jerry |
