Icelandic music needed!

Big problem - I´ve a gig coming up soon and the organisers are wanting some Icelandic folk music in it. I always thought, certainly incorrectly, that music up there started and ended with Bjork. Please, please prove me wrong and tell me where I can find info on the net and to whom I should be listening.
thanx,
John

I have a similar inquiry. Our local community arts centre is going to try a "Nordic Themed" festival next year. They want to do a nighttime procession with music and stuff, and of course figure I should know about the music.

Well I know they have fiddles and accordions and I've heard of Varttina but beyond that I am clueless. Anyone know any Scandinavian musicians in or around Ontario? This would be a pretty good gig for someone but they have to write it into the funding proposal before Oct 1.

Skarpi, it will be in mid-June 2003. Know any players in central Canada? (What, you thinking of jumping over!!??)

By the way is that Blue Skies festival still happening in Iceland? Our local folk festival is the Blue Skies Music Festival, first weekend in August, maybe we should have a cultural exchange! It's a great party in the woods, and next year is the 30th anniversary for it.

Me coming over hmmmmmm It could be I am thinking to go to Halifax to my friends in McGinty band but it is very exspensive so I have save for some money this coming winter, by the way I think the winter is already here, the wheather is very bad at the moment strong wind and rain and very cold . I shall talk to my freinds in band and see what we can do . All the best skarpi Iceland.

Skarpi, that would be cool. We're pretty far from Halifax though. Like about 1500 kilometers. Minnesota is about as far in the opposite direction, west of us.

Like to hear more about your band.

John C.: Would you be interested in a lullabye which I believe goes back to the ancient sagas and/or the tune for a children's song? I have transcribed them from a tape we bought in Iceland.

If somebody would tell me how to post these to the Mudcat, I would do it tomorrow.

They are in the key of D and are nice, accessible pieces.

Hey, John, glad to hear you're still out there doing music! I don't suppose you could use anything off that Anna Thorhallsdottir tape I sent Andy? Just set up a good drone and run away with it? (By the way, did you see the Bjork movie whose name is now eluding me, and did you like it?) How is Rosa Mystica? Is there a website? Cheers, Margaret

I'm trying to post the lullabye to the Mudcat under the name Icelandic_Lullabye. Perhaps I should have mentioned that I don't have any words for it.

Right now, my ISP is saying it can't connect. It should work some time later today, if past experience is any indication.

I put the melody on in two keys, first in D (actually Bm) and then in F (actually Dm). The chords to go with the first one are Bm, F# & Em. The second set is Dm, Gm, Am. On the tape, they play the melody on a saxophone, with lovely guitar arpeggios rippling in the background. The name of the tape is Melodies in the Midnight Sun, arranged and produced by Stefan S. Stefansson. We bought it in 1993 in a rock and mineral shop in Reykavik. (sp)
The title in Icelandic is Softhu unga astin min, where the "th" in the first word is actually an Icelandic letter which looks like a small d with the top curving to the left. The J-card says:

"A young widow can not marry the man she loves because he is an outlaw. She has a child with her land steward and hums this lullabye for her baby when thoughts about her distant lover make her sad."

I hope it goes through!

Change that chord mentioned in the post above from F# to F# minor.

Leeneia (nice name!!), that would be wonderful if that worked. thanks again for your trouble.

Margaret V - great to hear from you again, where ya bin??? I´ll PM you with what news there is. The music you sent Andy would have been ideal - the problem is, Andy the Mooooor went home to Australia a couple of months ago for a short break, got homesick and decided to stay! So now he´s picking watermelons instead of falling off the mountains......

Awrabest,
John

Well, the e-mail went out to alison, but I couldn't send her the MIDI file, only the .nwc file. This is because whenever I Saved it As a MIDI file, Noteworthy Composer created a "piece" consisting of 64 measures of rest.

Ain't computers wonderful?

I hope the piece can get added to the Digital Tradition for the general delectation, regardless.

The tape it came from is one of our favorite recordings. We love it when we ask friends "Do you want to hear some Icelandic folk music?" They nod, glassy-eyed, expecting something dreary , then we play this Great Stuff and they love it!

Here it is ,

Sofðu unga ástin mín,
Úti regnið grætur,
Mamma geymir gullin þín,
gamla leggi og völuskrín.
Við skulum ekki vaka um dimmar nætur,

Það er margt sem mykrið veit,
minn er hugur þungur,
Oft ég svartan sandinn leit,
svíða grænan engi reit.
Í jöklinum hljóða dauða djúpar sprungur.

Sofðu lengi sofðu rótt,
seint mun best að vakna,
Mæðan kenna mun þér fljótt,
meðan hallar degi skjótt,
að mennirnir elska , missa, gráta og sakna.

This are the words for the song " Sofðu unga ástin mín " Leeneia I hope you lik this song this is great lullaby one best here in Iceland.

Sorry about how I wrote the words I don´t know how to do it any other way.

John I might take this up on cd with my own voice and play, I think I can do that on my sons computer. I might late to the mudcat cd.

All the best skarpi Iceland.

Not folk music, but Icelandic: don't forget the beautiful music of the band Sigur Ros. Ageratis Byrjun is particularly lovely.

I don't see Icelandic_Lullabye in the Digital Tradition, but I'm still hoping. I assume that's where to look.
Scarpi, do you know any of the history of the song? How old it is, where the story about the mother, the outlaw and the land agent comes from?
Also, can you give us a quick translation of the words? I could be wrong, but I'm willing to bet that "Mamma" is Icelandic for "Momma." Also, "softhu" is sleep, right?
Thanks for posting them. I hope to get back to Iceland next year. It's so beautiful there, and we love to birdwatch.
If you want to make an end (break) a line of writing, you type

This cold weather you're having - do you think it will get warmer again, or is this the onset of winter? It doesn't seem fair!

Halló all , Leeneia If you come to Iceland let me know about it so we can meet and have a Mudcat meeting.

Direct tranlation on the words are: " SLEEP MY YOUNG LOVE "

Leeneia this is after a poet named : Jóhann Sigurjónsson, it´s about a mother trying to get her baby to sleep, If I translate ruffly direct: go to sleep my young love, outside the rain is crying, your momm will storage you golden things, we shall not wake at the dark nights.

I really don´t know the story but I can get some knowlage tomorrow, I hope my spelling is right.

All the best Skarpi Iceland. Leeneia I coult If you want send you this song by mail You´ll get it next week or so. You just have get to me you address. My E-mail is in the Mudcat storage. All the best skarpi Iceland.

No luck so far in getting the song to post. For some reason, I can't get it Saved As a MIDI file. Now I'm seeing if Joe Offer can do anything with it.

John C, when is this gig?

Skarpi, thanks for the information. Spelling is not important. You do have some mistakes, but you're pretty good.

To make a line break: do you see the characters above the period (.)and comma (,) that look like little arrows? Type the one that points left, then br, then the one that points right. To make an empty space, put one of those sets at the end of the line and another one on the next line.

I'll be glad to e-mail Noteworthy or MIDI files to anybody interested. Just sent me your e-mail address by Personal Message (click) -Joe Offer-
