Lyr Req: WAKE UP MY MIND - the Uglies

Does anybody know the lyrics to this thing? I haven't sung it for over twenty years and I've got a gig coming up in November where I'm supposed to be singing it! All I can find in the memory banks are two of what I seem to recall as three verses.

WAKE UP MY MIND
Burnett, Holden, and Gibbons : recorded by The Uglies, c.1965

I am a man in the prime of my life
I've got a house and a car and a beautiful wife
There's no chip on my shoulder, I've no axe to grind
And no possible reason to Wake Up My Mind.

And the days break and the nights fall and drift into time …

Somewhere there's hunger, somewhere there's war
But I can do nothing so I'll just ignore
The cruelty around me, pretending I'm blind
In case I start thinking and Wake Up My Mind.

And the days break and the nights fall and drift into time …

I read in the papers, a policeman shot down
Two negro's in cold blood in some racial town
And I'm having a new car but I don't know what kind
But one of these days I will Wake Up My Mind.

And the days break and the nights fall and drift into time …

Yes it seems as though fortune has smiled upon me
But now it's too late I'm beginning to see
I've spent my life searching but no peace I find
And it's left me with no time to Wake Up My Mind.

And the days break and the nights fall and drift into time …

Still a good song! Does anyone know anything about these guys??

Cheers! R-J

Thank ya folks! I had forgotten all about that second verse. I used to do it in a Ska/Reggae band back in 1981 and we've got a re-union coming up in November (I think!) and it seems that I'm the only one who even remembered that we used to do the song.

just had reason to look out this excellent song once again - the link Stewie provided no longer seems to work ... found some other stuff though :

It seems The Uglys were a Brummagen band and this thought-provoking little number was BIG, Down Under in Oz in 1965 (not so in England though)...
Dave Pegg was a former member of The Uglys too ...

I had entirely forgotten that song until I saw your thread! Another brilliant song of my youth in Oz
