Lyr Req: Bohemian Girl / I Dreamt I Dwelt in ...

Subject: LYR REQ - The Bohemian Girl
From: Chet W.

There's a song I've looked for - just heard it again on the Prairie Home Companion except with different words - I believe the actual title is The Bohemian Girl, from an old light opera or some such. It starts "I dreamt I dwelled in marbled halls..." and the chorus repeats a few times "You loved me still the same...". If anyone has the whole lyric I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks, Chet W.

(I Dreamt I Dwelt In) Marble Halls

I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls
with vassals and serfs at my side,
and of all who assembled within those walls
that I was the hope and the pride.
I had riches all too great to count
and a high ancestral name.
But I also dreamt which pleased me most
that you loved me still the same,
that you loved me
you loved me still the same,
that you loved me
you loved me still the same.

I dreamt that suitors sought my hand,
that knights upon bended knee
and with vows no maiden's heart could withstand,
they pledged their faith to me.
And I dreamt that one of that noble host
came forth my hand to claim.
But I also dreamt which charmed me most
that you loved me still the same
that you loved me
you loved me still the same,
that you loved me
you loved me still the same.

A little info... Marble Halls, or The Dream, from 'The Bohemian Girl', 1843, by Irish composer and baritone Michael William Balfe, 1808-1870.

There's even a reference to this song in James Joyce's Dubliners.

Dinnae laugh at me, but I'm thinkin' th' song appears on ane o' Enya's albums as weel. It micht be ca'd by anither name, but th' wairds are th' same. An' whether some folk are quick tae scoff at her as "new age," She still soonds richt grand. I wish I cuid reca' th' specific album, but I cannae...ane o' th' newer anes, tho'.

It's on Shepherd Moons, by Enya, and in the notes in her songbook, it says 'The Bohemian Girl' and in particular, this song, is a favorite of both Enya and her mother.

I remember the first time I heard this song was when I was a little girl, watching a Laurel and Hardy movie. It was the one where they were gypsies who took in a little girl and raised her in their caravan. Jeanette McDonald sang "Marble Halls".

ooops, I'm not sure who sang it in the L&H movie. It is not on MacDonald's list, but the Laurel and Hardy 'Bohemian Girl'(1936) is available on video.

Has anyone figured out the chords to this song? There's one or two I can't quite get.

Thanks, Chet W.

My mother used to sing this a lot(years ago), but I don't think she knew all the words. Brings back memories.

Well, well well--this is like a terminal case of deja vu all over again. On a shelf in our living room is a picture of me some few decades ago, in drag, as a 8-year-old Bohemian girl. My dad is standing beside me--he was the pirate King, or was it Gypsy King, who stole me. I still remember my lines, " I want to go home, I want to go home." My Aunt is also in the pictiure dressed as a "maid"?. I don't remember her part. They had my Dad play the part of the pirate King as they were afraid to have someone else "steal" me.

Memories.

Memory? No, That's from 'Cats'.... sorry, Richard, just teasin'. I couldn't help it.

Richard, What did the other 8 year old boys in school do to you when they found out?? Kind of like the having to be a boy playing Little Buttercup in HMS Pinafore. Or did you keep it a family secret? Sounds like it was great fun. Good thing you took photos.

Alice;

I made sure they didn't. In fact the pictures did not surface until recently, by which time I had two grown sons and there was less doubt about my masculinity--which is not to say my brothers and sons don't take the opportunity for some ragging. They aren't something I will post on the web on use on an album cover.
