Colour and musical instruments

Subject: Colour and musical instruments
From: GUEST,Marie

Hi, I'm conducting a little survey about the possible link between somebody's favorite colour and the type of instrument they are playing ( or would like/be most inclined to play!...) This kind of research is I believe, not dissimilar to the one conducted by Bearheart about planetary influences and musical preferences! I myself do some research into colour therapy, and more particularly: looking for a deeper understanding of the language of colour in relation to people's choice of instrument in order to see if there could be any meaningful pattern coming up in the long run!... Anybody interested should tell me about the colour and musical instrument they feel most drawn to!... (It would also help me to know why you prefer a particular instrument above the rest; if this apply! :-)

Thanks in advance!

PS: I will share the results of the survey in this forum in due time!

My favorite color is blue. My favorite instrument is the acoustic guitar. High-pitched instruments like the fiddle or mandolin start to grate on my ears after a while, but, I've never been particularly drawn to the deeper tones of the bass or cello. The in-the-middle range of the guitar suits my ears to a tee. It can also be played in a variety of ways (strummed, flat-picked, fingerpicked) and can be tuned a zillion ways besides plain old EBGDAE.

And, not no prejudice your research or anything, but everybody knows fiddlers like red and bass players always wear black. :-)

I delight in every color. This earth is a feast for the eyes. However, my favorite color changes with my mood, though blues and greens are always in the lead.

I play acoustic and electric guitar, bass, a bit of keyboard, banjo, flute and now I am working on the fiddle.

Ah! I see the relation! I am blue when I cannot play like I desire and green with envy at those who can!

Green for my favorite colo(u)r, mostly because I like so many different shades of it, from baby apple green to the deep rich hunter green, and points between. To me, green is the color of life and growing things.

The instrument I most respond to is the acoustic guitar, although like colors, I also like a LOT of others.

Purple - purr-ple - purrrr-ple. And any of its variations like magenta, indigo, lavender etc etc

My main instrument is the Celtic Harp, but I also play flute and have dabbled a little bit with African & Middle Eastern drumming. I love all colours, except lemon yellow and bright yellow, although I like yellows in the orange range. (My Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome may account for this, because it is the glare of those yellow colours which is hard to take, and the SSS consultant said that it is common for people with this condition not to like yellow.)

I love listening to cello music and my latest bright idea is to learn saxophone - well, one of my latest bright ideas. In fact I love all kinds of music except really high pitched things like fifes. Can't stand listening to music or singing which is sharp. Flat is not as annoying as sharp.

I like almost all colors, and I play flute, recorder, guitar, mountain dulcimer, piano, and drums. The only color I steadfastly dislike is a dark, golden yellow. I think it correlates to my loathing of the saxophone.

HippieChick: when you say that your favorite colour is "rainbow"; do you mean in fact, all the colours of the spectrum?!... If this is the case, I've got a little experiment for you (...and the rest of you folks!...) First, go to this link : http://www.aura-soma.net/products/equilibrium/bottles/ Instructions.asp

(Sorry, I can't do the "blue clicky thing"!)

...and report,in your next post, the number of the combination(s) you have selected! (the number of each bottle is preceded by the letter B )

Have fun!... and I'm looking forward to seeing your results! :-)

Fav. color blue, with rich earth tones like umbers and siennas a close second.

Fav. instrument acoustic guitar, tho I like all stringed instruments (and alto sax). I did fall in love once with a brilliant hi-gloss red Washburn Hummingbird...but the application of cold compresses and time gave me the strength to resist.

will now go try out aurasoma....

Favorite color is currently green, favorite instrument is the harp. Although I also like dark red and the cello and blue and the guitar--and for some reason I do associate all those colors with those instruments. I wonder if the association Bee-dubya-ell mentioned of fiddles with red is related to my association of cellos with dark red?

Green is the bridge between our will (yellow) and God's will (blue). Inter-connectedness which may lead to being able to give and receive love freely. Nature (birth, rebirth, growth), harmony and balance are all green aspects. It is about breath, circulation, being in the flow (breathing in & out - photosynthesis).

I've just checked out those bottles. Well, it's interesting. I chose 4 that I liked first, and I could relate to the texts. Then I thought I would choose some that I didn't like and pretend they were my choice. Well, they weren't about me at all. Then there were some colours that I could have chosen and would have been happy with as well. So I chose those last. Funny thing is, I would have related to those as well. So there you have it: not all in the world can be explained, and I liked the experience. I wonder whether everyone choses different bottles. It's intriguing. An

I like blue and accoustic guitar, I don't like green, shawms, and tunes that only work on piano. I hate songs that only work if synthesisers are involved.

I heard on the radio of a jazz pianist who associated colours with tunes, based on the colours of the record labels he had as a child. I find I do this to some extent.

An, When I look at your selection,I feel that there has been a lot of issues (and chances are,it's still the case!...) having to do with your emotional life!...which makes it a little awkward for me to deal with your reading "out in the open", here, in this forum...Perhaps you would be interested to give me your E-mail address where I would feel more comfortable to share my thoughts on the subject! What I would like to say musicalwise here, though, it's that it's interesting to note that you placed your favorite colour (light blue) "only" in third position!... If you remember your selection: orange/orange, pale yellow/pale green, pale blue/pale yellow and magenta/gold. Could it be then (and this is my rough attempt I was talking about in my last post :-) that you tend to use your music the now to help you cope with your situation... as a kind of "refuge" or "protection"!... Why do I say this ? Well, it's probably time that I share with you, folks, my own associations between colour and instrument (which share the "same energy or vibe"), so that you can all compare your selected instrument and favorite colour and see if it somehow matches my own findings which I started a few years ago! (Remember that my attributions are not "set in stone" so all your remarks, suggestions or objections are welcome :-)

...pretty minimalist so far! (judging from the post above! :-)

So here goes:

RED: Drums (and more particularly the drum kit)

PINK: Violin (used to think: LILAC)

CORAL(a blend of red, orange and pink): African,Shamanic and Oriental drums and frame drums (used to place here also the harmonica(mouth organ) and the accordion; but now, tend to think they are MAGENTA!)

ORANGE: Saxophone

GOLD: Sitar(...or maybe it's ORANGE...) Brass instruments found in Jazz music (used to place here: the lead electric guitar!)

YELLOW: Rhythm electric guitar

OLIVE GREEN: elecro-acoustic guitar

GREEN: acoustic guitar + singing (Folk music!)

TURQUOISE: synthesizer, electric keyboard (New Age music)

BLUE: Piano (Classical music) (LIGHT BLUE: used to think: classic harp (not Celtic harp!)

ROYAL BLUE: Bass guitar, double bass Contemporary classical music Blues

VIOLET: Cello, Church organ

MAGENTA: Flute

DEEP MAGENTA( the "colour" which contains the whole specrum but with a predominance of violet, magenta and red): a mastership of a fair number of instruments! :-)

So there you are...

You can see An, where I'm getting at, with regards to your selection: all your colours in the third position reflect, I believe, your singing, piano and guitar playing you're talking about! :-) Remember as well to look for the "hidden" colour of this combination: pale blue + pale yellow = pale green !

I'd like also to add for those who have posted their selection numbers that I will deal with your readings in due time, let me know in advance if you prefer a "private" reading or not!(don't forget then, to send me your E-mail address!) Meanwhile you can try to see how your bottle combinations fit with my Colour/instrument chart and see the commonalities or not!

I need to say here that there is still a lot to talk about,as for example, one could be drawn to an instrument whose vibration is the complementary opposite of one's own vibration! It is not as freak as it sound! Complementary colours work hand in hand! They tend to "feed" each other! I think more particularly of the case of Sorcha here: Clearly you are a "Green" person... and yet you are drawn to the Fiddle which I would either tend to link with Pink (although it is not the same instrument as violin!) or with Magenta! Both colours contain a lot of Red... Red and Pink (which is in fact: a "diluted" or "pale" Red!) being the complementary of Green!

What to say now of those of you who are into acoustic guitar and favor the colour blue?!!... Well, there is another concept I would like to talk about but I will deal with it later!... Meanwhile, have fun with your "colored music" :-)

as for example

OK, my bottles come out at 9, 50, 28, 100. Sorry, but the descriptions really don't reflect me.

Ideal instrument has to be the guitar. Choosing just on looks, not sound:-

Acoustic guitar-wise: the Tacoma Chief instruments. Very plain with no decoration, just the basic woodgrain, but an unusual design.

Electric-wise: Fender Strat, "natural" wood finish, black scratchplate, chrome fittings.

So I'm very much a "natural-look", no sunbursts or anything. Although I saw a lovely Tele the other day which had a highly-figured wood finish stained bright jade green. But really I'll play a hunk of unfinished tree-trunk, bark and all, if it gives the best sound.

Graham.

Grab, I'm sorry to hear that the descriptions didn't fit you! There are here, I believe, three different possible reasons for this: First, Aura-Soma has a "New-Agey" approach to colour which can be off-putting for some! Second, you would be surprised to see that if you had chosen the bottles in real life, your choice might have turn quite different!... and of course, closer to the reality of who you are! (as the pictures on a screen doesn't give justice to the "real thing"!)This is why I would advice people to try and make their selection from "home-made" samples of colours; looking in a magazine for example - even if that means just choosing one colour(instead of a combination of two) at a time! Third, having an Aura-Soma consultation through the net is a bit like having one's natal chart computerized... all the datas don't seem to fit together and can be contradictory at times! I guess the human brain is still superior for that kind of thing :-)

Saying that I can see reflections of your first bottle choice with your comments about how you're going about guitar preferences! Indeed looking for a "natural" finish is pretty much a "green" thing!... while looking at the same time for something "unusual", well, that's pretty much a "turquoise" thing! (Turquoise being about the expression of one's individuality or personality that denotes itself from the massa or the more conformist aspect of plain blue! It can also be at times, a difficulty to be able to express one's individual aspect in relation to the rest of society!)

And now... I don't want to hear from all the "blue" folks of this thread that I just hinted at their "conformist" aspect! :-) Well, I suppose picking up the acoustic guitar as one's instrument of predilection is not very original! I haven't seen here anybody mentioning the triangle yet!(Gosh, I'm getting*sad* here! :-) Now,seriously, "blue" people can have difficulty with authority sometimes... :-)

Short answer: Color=Blue, and Instrument=Acoustic guitar. Slightly longer answer: Color=Shades of blue from turquoise to indigo and shades of purple from lavender to maroon, and Instruments I've enjoyed most=Acoustic guitar, mandolin, autoharp, clarinet, bass clarinet, piano... and I want to learn to play the hammer dulcimer.

So I picked B #0 Spiritual Rescue; my "master" is/are Pallas Athena & Aeolus, my tarot card is The Fool and my tarot correspondence is the Eight of Swords (that can't be good!). Hmmm... it sez my I Ching sign is wind-wood above, wind-wood below. I do enjoy playing woodwind instruments; any correlation? (Even if so, my primary instrument is acoustic guitar.)

Just a question, Marie. You didn't refer to purple in your list. Does "violet" mean the same as purple, or are they different?

Also, where does Celtic Harp fit into your list?

I find your list interesting because the colours I chose - apart from purple, of course, and magenta were orange (called gold), and pale violet and pale coral and blue/royal blue. My list of instruments seems to fit your correspondences pretty well. Harp, flute, African/Middle Eastern drums, cello, saxophone.

I started playing piano at 3, chord organ(keyboardythingie) @ 8, flutophone @ 9, flute at 11, guitar & my brother's Hammond B3 @13, harmonica @ 14, and then in college in my 20's, I was a voice major, I took up the baritone horn (euphonium) for an extra marching band scholarship, found a mountain dulcimer & trombone in the bargain basement of a thrift shop for $7 each & learned to play them both, also in music school, clarinet, alto sax, & lots of percussion instruments & the recorder, kazoo, in my 30's, pennywhistle, kalimba, synthesizer, & a bunch of wierd things from other countries, in my 40,s Bodhran, autoharp, banjo, zither, washtub bass, washboard, laud, jaw harp, spoons, concertina, bowed psaltery, & who knows what will be next! OK, colors---fav to wear, or fav to decorate with or what?! when I was very little--about the middle of elementary school--, my 2 fav colors in the really-big crayola box were Maroon & Sky Blue. In my teens, my fav color to wear was purple, plum, lavendar, burgundy--probably in that order, In my 20's, I painted my living room a sunny, lemon yellow. Then in my late 20's I painted my bedroom peach. In my later years, I wear mostly black, I would like to do my bedroom in violet, & just did my bathroom in pink.

Speaking of color & music, a friend of mine in music school who happened to be legally blind, told me that he had always associated certain colors with specific notes! I asked him to describe it to me. It was fascinating. There have been many studies on color & how specific colors convey certain ideas to us in our American culture. Here, I grew up wearing black to all performances (performance "noir"!), formal gatherings, and to funerals. When I was in Korea, the people wore all white to the funeral! If I want someone to trust me, I wear black or possibly navy. It is the color of nuns, priests(no bad jokes please!), & often police wear black or navy. Yellow legal pads--the emporer of China (& maybe his wife, child)were the only ones allowed to wear yellow in China--it's the imperial color. It is the color of intelligence! I used to take yellow kleenexes with me to college exams. I graduated with a 3.64 GPA.

You will find that creative people (such as musicians & painters & other visual artists) will often wear more silver jewelery, wear colors outside the plain old blue, such as purples, pinks, blues with reds mixed in--aka the purples! Guys will more often than not say their fav color is blue--it is more safe ( accepted by the masses) for mens' clothing. I am interested to see if there is any corelation between colors & instrument. Now, what do you do with vocalists? Do they enter into your equasions?

Subject: RE: Colour and musical instruments

Helen, Purple is indeed a little bit different from Violet... It is a bit more intense, a bit deeper out of the fact that it contains more red! You could, if you like, "sandwish" it between Violet and Magenta! Saying that, they can also be considered the same colour, as some people when they refer to the spectrum, they talk either of purple or violet! It's I suppose a question of terminology which,I believe, has never been officially standardized with regards to the naming of colour! But for our purposes, you could consider it pretty much the same as Violet with regards to its meaning!...with perhaps a "shamanic streak" to it! (Purple being close to Magenta,as said earlier...Magenta being one of the colour of Shamanism (healing with shamanism); the other one is Coral and is more about living shamanism as a philosophy of life!...whereas Orange is more about Buddhism!(there is indeed in Orange less Red (less of the "mother earth energy"; less of the "tribal" energy than in Coral!) and more of the Wisdom of the Gold! Orange being "sandwished" between Coral and Gold! Now, back to the music side of things: I was very aware when I was posting my own list of correspondances that I would omit a lot of the instruments that, you guys, are playing! My list is only a starting point and when I did a few years ago, I wasn't into Folk music at all! (In fact, I'm still pretty new to it!)So, I was not thinking spontaneously of instruments like the Fiddle or the Banjo (maybe the Banjo is Olive Green!?...)...or the Celtic Harp! :-) The problem that I've got now is the fact that I strongly (and have always...) linked Folk music with the colour Green; and therefore any traditional or Folk instruments you might think of! (especially the stringed ones!) While I'm writing this, I try to hear and visualise the Celtic Harp...and I would say: maybe Emerald Green; in other words, the colour "sandwished" between Green and Turquoise! I can feel your disappointment Helen! All this "fledgling" theory of correspondances that seem to crumble! :-) But, wait, I was surprised to see that in your selection of four bottles, your "missing" colour (in other words, the one that doesn't appear in your selection in a very obvious way)is precisely green! A missing colour needs to be considered as well for it has also something to do with you!...Saying that it is only the case when it is pretty clear it is absent from the selection! Sometimes, it can be more difficult to see which one is missing! (I think more particularly, here, of Mary Garvey's selection!) Sometimes, even, there are no colour "missing"! :-)

Now, if you look back at what I said about Sorcha whose missing colour can be considered either Red or Pink! (She's the one who's gonna be left with the final decision on that one :-)... maybe, you can start to understand where I'm getting at in your particular case! I think your spontaneous or (unconscious) choice for the Celtic Harp helps you to feel more "whole", more in harmony with yourself; in other words it helps you to ground your more basic energy or true nature! Hence you feel more complete, less scattered perhaps in your thoughts, actions and emotions thanks to the playing of this particular instrument ( which "works" for you in a special way than, say, if you had opted straight away for the saxophone!) I let you ponder on that one... :-)

Marie, are you familiar with the Luscher colour test? There's an on-line version here, which seems more than a bit negative with the "random" answers I gave. It used to be avalable in paperback form in the 70s, and you might still find an old copy. Like Monopoly, it's a great way to alienate your friends!

If you ask me my favourite colours, you can ask me again tomorrow and I'll give you different answers! The artist in me got shouldered out years ago when I began to play and sing, but makes me awkward at replying to things like this. I know the kinds of combinations I like; and how to relate them to the kind of mood I want to encourage (maybe I should have been an interior decorator?) and I like textures as much as colours.

if it gives you any guidance, I play a 12-string guitar that's in a natural (i.e. not very shiny) finish with a light top and slightly darker sides and back; I bought a mandolin with a red wood-grain top (in preference to green or blue), but I've been kicking myself for over thirty years for passing up a mandolin-banjo with an wood-inlaid back.

Kaleea, I'm quite impressed by your musical skills!... and also by your knowledge of the symbolism of colour! If you do happen to come back to this thread, perhaps you could help me to "enlighten" the rest of the folks here! :-) Anyway, what about singing and voicing or vocalising?... Well, if you go back to my chart, you will see that I tend to relate singing with Green! I was not just referring to Folk singing but any genre like (Pop or Rock etc...) Now, when it comes to "proper" voicing; Opera, classical singing, I would like to think deep Blue (not Royal Blue!... but just deep "plain" Blue...Royal Blue contains a little bit of Red... that's what makes it "Royal" I suppose! :-) To use an earlier expression of mine, Royal Blue is the colour "sandwished" between (plain)Blue and Violet! Well, that was for the annecdote!...Categorising singing is a bit confusing to me, to be honest! I'm tossed between the "theory" or "traditional teaching" that Blue refers to the throat chakra according to the Hindus... and therefore, logically, the voice and everything having to do with it!(communication, singing or even stuttering!...)But also, the fact that I'm trying to follow my own feeling, gut or intuition about the possible "true" link between instruments (of any kind!... the voice being one of them!) and colours!Unless of course, I'm a synesthete who isn't aware of the condition... in which case this research would be just a joke and have no point for me! :-) click here

Steve, Yes, I know about the Luscher test, though never experienced it myself! I tried to get through your link but it lead me to a direct download which I can translate!... So I tried a Freeserve search and it lead me to some simpler versions of the actual test... and I agree with you, it sounds pretty negative!... and, furthermore, I don't always agree with the interpretations or the meanings attributed to the colours! But saying that, the inventor is one of the pioneers in colour psychology...so I give him credit for that simple fact!... :-) With regards to your possible favorite colour(s): try to remember the time when you were a young child (5-6 years old) and the colours you were most drawn to when playing with, say, your crayons or colored pencils!... (Children, as a rule, tend to be less "inhibited" than us, adults, in recognizing our "true colours"!)

Happy memories!... :-)

Well, Marie, I can remember quite distinctly that when we were issued with pencil- and wax-crayons at school (at age five) I thought the sight of the colours neatrly laid out in sequence was absolutely wonderful. I still think there's a bit of magic today in a box of coloured pencils. I'd like to think it's very healthy to see relationships rather than component parts!

Marie, I have found that a disproportionate amount of little girls (starting from preschool age) have an inexplicable preference for bright pinks (That's why so many girls toys are wrapped in bright pink). Around 7 years of age the girls then start to say that bright pink isn't for them, they've grown out of it, or want to pretend they have. Perhaps it's only then that they start to find new preferences in colour? I haven't found the same pull towards one colour in little boys. By the way, thank you for your private message. I am going to be a bit cruel and not say how you're doing so far. I 'd hate to feel I have steered you in a direction. I'm looking forward to part 2 of your reading. An

An, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to be a bit "cruel" here, as well!...(... it's only fair! :-) ...but I don't think that (at the start) little girls -as a majority- are more into pink than any other color! True, they're getting EXPOSED through a lot of it in their "tender" age, but I believe that's a marketing thing!... A lot of girlie toys like Barbies, dollies, make-up kits are packaged in pink, more because of the associations this particular vibration is conjuring up! Pink has indeed a lot to do with caring (and more particularly the motherly care!) In its purest form; it is the unconditional love a mother has (ideally speaking!)for her new born babe...It is also a very feminine colour...and it still strikes people to come across a man wearing a pink shirt! It is also a "sexy" colour in its own way!... emphasising more the aspect of soft, romantic feminine beauty (than the other colors with sexy connotations such as red, orange or purple!...) And, of course, because children are easily influenced by adverts, peer pressure etc... it is more likely that, at that age, little girls THINK they prefer that colour above all the rest! You also tend to notice that tomboys of the same age, which aren't into dolls and "household" toys, aren't either into the pink colour! See for yourself what colour you were into as a young child, and what it meant for you!...(Pay attention! this will be taken into account in your reading! :-)

I work in a preschool, but I also have daughters (one of them a tomboy into pink - sorry) and I remember being in love with a pink drinking cup my granma used to have. This was a powdery light pink, as opposed to the brighter pinks fought over at school (drawing pens etc etc). I think the marketing people use pink because their research showed this preference for pink in girls in the first place. At least that's what I have stored in my memory on the subject. It's funny that I should be so stubborn on the subject. I do agree with you that it's a very feminine colour etc., which could explain this preference in girls in the first place. (Yes, I'm stubborn). I have a little theory to run by you: when a woman dresses in vibrant pink, would she be sending out signals that she is looking for a partner? An

Marie,

Regarding your comments about green/Celtic harp connection: spring green (i.e. the colour of new green leaves, expecially on willow trees and camphor laurel trees) was my favourite colour to wear when I was a teenager - apart from my enduring love for purple.

I used to have raging arguments with my mother, when I was little, about wanting to wear purple (not just pale or light versions of purple, but full-on dark versions) and she would keep telling me that little girls shouldn't wear dark colours. She had very specific views on that then, but I think she finally got used to the more recent trends of dressing little kids in darker & brighter colours.
