Oh yeah Mmario? Well then how come I found some sheets of music (you know what I mean) left out on the front step??? Don't make me come up there! *G* We will present the tune at the Sept. 20 jam.

And guess what!?? CONTRADANCING! Yeah! It turns out we DO have it in our county! It was hiding!

well -it's a bit awkward for a non-instrument playing person to say "hey guys - any of you want to try doing this piece of music none of you have ever seen before in yoru life?"

Well, Hardi will present it just that way this month, playing through it first so they can hear it. Any chance of you being here to hear it?

I can send you a copy if you want it Sorcha - the reel - properly titled 'Bodge's Reel' is a reel written by a friend of mine in memory of the actress who played the queen at several renaissance festivals - and who died this summer. I believe the reel was written when he heard she had cancer - he also wrote a lovely hymn for a benefit that was held in Massachusetts that helped defray some of her medical expenses.

Susan: One of these months, I'll take a couple of vacation days from work and head on up there... but from August to November things are too crazy at work for me to wander too far away from my desk. I was called in to work for 6 hours yesterday, fer goonnessake. So I'm sorry to have to miss your Gathering again, but I'll see y'all somewhere down the road (physically and temporally)!

Sharon,

Yeah, but then there's the winter weather driving problem. Tellya what. Join up at my website (link above) and then you can keep an eye on the calendar as it forms up and get announcements and so forth. And then you could pick a month, plan on it, and tell work about the previous commitment you have.

Don't make me come down there! *G*

Susan: I was trying not to think about winter-weather driving... eek! Of course, if this coming winter is as mild as the last one, it'll be a moot point; we shall see. Okay then, I will follow your suggestion and watch for upcoming events, and plan as best I can. "Tell work about the previous commitment"... ha ha, that's a good one. ;^)

In the meantime, enjoy your September 20th Gather; I'll be there in spirit, wishing I could be there in person!

Sharon

I think that of all the people who have attended, Mmario and I and Hardi have the worst schedules of anyone I know. Of course Hardi's is one which really CAN be overwhelmed by last-minute emergencies-- he's a priest, and people need him without knowing ahead of time, often. He manages to be here as much as he can, and doesn't schedule anything around the jam/gathering date except weddings, vestry meetings, and bishop's visits. I make the schedule work for me by keeping clear with myself that my priority right now is building a music community-- not the myriad other things I have enjoyed in the past, which have to take a backseat and which friends understand, now that my health allows me to do more than sit at the puder all day being helpful in e-mail. So that's how we keep time to do this-- maybe Mmario could tell us how he does it-- how he transitions from the hope to the reality. He does manage to be here a lot.

How do you do it, Mmario?

Every once in a while I give myself "mental health days" *grin* - it helps that I'm relatively close (I would be down more often except that it's in the "wrong' direction (usually)to get anything *else* done in combo with a trip down - and I have to combine a lot of things to fit them all in.

I *could* do the jams as a day trip - (I normally would choose not to; because they *are* mental health breaks for me). And occasionally I get frustrated because MY schedule allows for the trip - but family business conflicts (This month for example - by the time you add in the animal duties on top of being at work an hour in the wrong direction - and having no-one available if the gelding decides to break out (he really just steps over the fence - not a problem unless he wanders into the road) AAAAAARRRRGGGHHHHH!

But as WYSIWYG knows- I schedule MONTHS in advance - I will be making reservations shortly for a trip October '04 - and many of the weekends from June to Dec of '04 are already "booked" as well. (tentatively)

Need more beds up there. Hardi is going to build low platforms to hold mattresses. Have any motel contacts for used but not stinky-gross mattresses? Would foam mats be enough? Or I might put small metal trash cans up there to hold tabletops for each bedsdte table, and inside would be an inflatable, pillows, linens, and so forth-- the anti-mouse and anti-dust strategy. Instant room, upon arrival. Put an inflatable doll in there too.... nonononono...... hm, amenities and then AMENITIES! A Rise Up Singing in every can!

At Hardi's mom's, we slept on a creatively made nest-- it was a heavy layer of thick carpet padding his brother uses for a martial-arts workout space, then on top of that a compressed-foam camping mat, then on top of that the three-inch thick foam mats from the camper, and then PILLOWS. And it was the BEST, except for being hard to get up from off the floor. More give than a futon but really firm.

Is that OK for up there?

Excuse me, this is somewhere between a brain storm and a brain fart.

you're talking to the man who sleeps most of the summer in a 4' x 6' tent. I'm the wrong one to ask!

Well, actually, I am talking to The Mudcat, although I may have looked your way while speaking. You know-- THE Mudcat, a very wise creature with a sweet soul capable, of vast thought and superbly accurate wit, in its better moments. The Collective Y'All, as in Y'all Come.

The problem with foam mattresses is that foam disintegrates and could become an allergy/respiratory problem. Spring mattresses would probably hold up better long-term. My 2ยข worth, for the vending machine.

Inflatables are relatively cheap and easy, but for god's sake get one you can hook a vacuum cleaner up to, or an electric pumper.

Slabs of high-density foam aren't that erxpensive, either, and they stack easily -- you can build slipcovers for them pretty easily. As far as I know disintegration isn't a problem for years!
