ADD: Plastic (Shel Silverstein)

Looking for a 60's-era gag song called "It's Plastic" (or something like that). It dealt with a variety of items that turned out to cheap plastic imitations of what they originally seemed to be. No idea who recorded it.

I recall an old 50's tune A Plastic Heart....

They're making almost everything of plastic nowdays

several things toys, etc....

I wish I had a plastic heart so it wouldn't break.

PLASTIC

(Shel Silverstein) Hollis Music, Inc (BMI)
(on "The Best of the Serendipity Singers" - Mercury CD)

Well, a little bitty termite, he come a knockin'
Knockin' on my front door;
Well, he walked right in, sat right down,
Started nibblin' on the kitchen floor.
Well, he chewed on the walls, on the ceilings in the halls,
Lord knows he tried,
But he kept gettin' thinner, never got no dinner,
Finally, he sat up and cried,

He said, "It's plastic, I know it's plastic
Well, I know it ain't no wood, and it can't do me no good,
Because it's plastic, I say it's plastic
Everything's gonna be plastic by and by."
Well now, early one day in the month of May,
I went down to the beach
There were cuties and beauties in their little bathing suities,
And all of them within my reach.
Now a 38-24-36 miss just happened to be walkin' my way;
I said, "Please don't think me nervy, but you look so very curvy,
Tell me how you got that way!"

She said, "It's plastic. Oh, yes, it's plastic
It's as pretty as can be, but ya know that it ain't me
Because it's plastic, I say it's plastic
Everything's gonna be plastic by and by."
They say that someday soon, we'll have a plastic moon,
Shinin' through the plastic trees.
There'll be plastic ladies with plastic babies,
Bouncin' on their plastic knees.
Now, you may not agree that it's all gonna be,
And this record may make you sore;
But if you have a desire to throw it in the fire,
Or smash it down on the floor

Remember, it's plastic, I know it's plastic
Yeah, you can boil it, fry it, or bake it
Well, you know you just can't break it
Because it's plastic, you know it's plastic
Everything's gonna be plastic by and by."

I'm just a little "iffy" on the words of the last chorus, but it's close.

Thanks, Joe, I'm sure that's the one. I should have figured it would be Shel Silverstein. Now I'll have to track down the music somewhere. ANy ideas?

Well, Bert, I'm not good at transcribing tunes from a recording, but I can send you a WAV if you're able to receive attachments with your e-mail.

I assume you're the Bert from Phoenixville, PA. That's not so far from me - I'm in Perkasie, PA. I have a friend friend in Spring City who goes by the name of Barry Lee - hell of a guitar picker! He even has a web page at http://members.aol.com/J100sb/index2.html. I happen to be the WebMaster for the Bucks County Folk Song Society (http://pages.prodigy.com/bcfss/), which is why I have become interested in this site. Unfortunately I don't seem to have the kind of time for browsing that you guys do. You can reach me at acoffman@prodigy.com. Which reminds me - how do you stick HTML tags in these messages; I'm kinda new at this.

Duhhh - it just dawned on me how HTML tags would work in this message - I jest types 'em in and the browser renders 'em. That simple. It must be the lateness of the hour. Anyway, here's Barry Lee's Home Page and here's the Bucks County Folk Song Society Web Page. Feel free to EMail me.

Subject: Confusingly similar user names
From: PoppaGator

Serious thread creep: I'm surprised that Mudcat allows a new member to register with a username identical to that of an established member -- did that really happen with Bert and Bert?
    We try to limit confusion in that area, but confusion sometimes does happen. If somebody new registers with a name that is bothersomely close to yours, please let me know and I'll try to work something out. The "new bert" situation arose before we identified unregistered users as Guests. "New Bert" was not a registered member.
