A team of Austrian animal psychologists has observed that cats, which have rapid pulses, appreciate music with a fast beat and prefer deep rather than high-pitched tones. They seem to love male-voiced choirs, the double bass and the oboe, but detest violins, writes Clare Chapman in The Sunday Times of London. For five days at a time, the test cats were filmed. If they liked what they heard, they moved closer to the speakers; if they didn't, they would stand still or move away." I'm not much of a cat-person m'self, but it strikes me that cats may have cause (call it a 'gut' feeling) to take against certain instruments ... sian |

After a few minutes a couple of curious faces can be seen peering round the corner wondering which of them is being strangled! (I will be the one being strangled if my piper friends read this!!! They get very sensative and defensive about the kind of noise((oops, sorry, music)) they make for some reason:-}) |

(Made life difficult) Another dog - border collie - liked to stand with the small hairs of his upper 'lip' only just touching the sound-box-bit (whatever that's called) of a concert harp. He'd stand as still as stone ... I never got the impression he actually enjoyed it; he seemed puzzled more than anything. sian |

When I am playing she jumps into the open case and purrs away. If the case is closed then she is sat as close to me as possible. I have a wooden flute and when I play that she walks around the room making a loud low wailing noise like she is in pain.......she might well be!!! If I put a CD of chart music or dance music on the first person the leave the room is my boyfriend followed very closely by the cat!!! Cat

My younger cat, Arthur, prefers Wagner (and races around the house like a Valkyrie when he hears it!). But both were quite attracted by my tape of the "Jingle Cats", and both kept trying to get inside my boom-box where they thought those singing cats must be! |

It's funny to watch all of them get poofy tail and walking like Frankenstein around in the room with the CD player. The only instrument I have they seem to like is the harp. So much so, I have to keep it put away where they can't get to it. If I leave it out, I'll wake up in the night to the sounds of kitty compositions on the strings. Robin |

The Mrs. has a very nice soprano voice. One the other side, the cat will run and hide under the bed at the very sight of me getting the fife out to play. The fiddle the cat has learned to ignore. But as for me singing, if I sing something softly and acapella, Phluphi does the head butting thing and purrs. |

Cerys likes watching classical music, but I suspect that this is because of all the bows waving around, other than that, she couldn't give a toss. I used to have a cat that would actually come in from outside to stop me from playing the whistle ( loud complaining followed by biting and scratching if it didn't stop quick enough ) she would then leave in a huff, as if to say "you're only doing it to annoy me...". I don't generally crank up the volume unless I need to hear it downstairs in the shop, a long way from the stereo. That makes him hide for hours. I'll need a bigger stereo, or patch it through the p.a. to make him vanish altogether, or step in front of a truck. The dog however seems to like the blues. At this moment I'm listening to Ralph Vaughan Williams and she's nowhere to be found. If I put Stevie Ray Vaughan on she'd be at my feet drooling...the aural equivalent of rolling in a dead salmon. Swelling strings seem to freak her out, much like her first encounter with a bear. The first time she heard pipe organ music she came right up to me and cocked her head to one side as if to say "what the fuck's that?"... kinda like she looked when she first saw a flying squirrel. I think she could learn to like the pipe organ. What fun. Mooh.

As Gathering-Goers can attest, mine are music lovers, and quite musical in their own rights. They appear out of nowhere for music, lounging on piano tops and in instrument cases. My personal favourite is the yearly listen to "Jeremy Brown and Jeanie Teale" at Christmastime. The first year I played it, the dog parked himself in front of the speaker and listened to it. One of the fairies is named Angus, and so is the dog. I imagine his perception of the story is something along the lines of: "Blah, blah, blahblah, blah blahblah, Angus (dog wags tail) blah blah blah Angus (wags again) blah..." The cats walk by and swat him for being such a yutz. |

She didn't respond much to my Celtic harp, but after I got the concert harp she'd always be in the room when I practiced, lying on her back. My other kitty, who is still with us, hates the whistle. He didn't like the violin when I first started playing, but he's all right with it now. He doesn't seem to care one way or the other. Our old dog, Zenith, barked at Mister's guitar the first time he got it out. She was only about 4 months old at the time. I had a budgie who really liked Michael Martin Murphey's first Cowboy Songs album. He'd just chirp right along with it. |

Plus she's a shy critter and likely to flee into the bedroom when we have sings here. A friend's tabby had similar reactions to the "Jingle Cats" CD as described here. In this case, I believe the cat was stalking around the living room, ears twitching, sniffing at the air with a puzzled look. "I hear another cat, but I can't smell them! It's not the "Anguish" wail, it's not the "Feed me" noise, it's not the "Let me out or I'll crap on your carpet again" howl, it's something unique. Like all youse, I couldn't tell if they were joining the chorus or complaining. The last boyfriend's two dogs did, too. Woof along, that is. My current cats are indifferent to singing but decide it's lap time if I want to practice guitar. They're all just individual. They ALL have always loved the sound of the can opener, however. |
