A friend of mine has just retired from a headmastership in Birmingham UK. The things that he had had to put up with from the local council are just laughable. His school was not allowed any longer to celebrate "Christmas" .... It had to be called "Winterval" in case it offended any ethnic minorities. Any other gems like this would be appreciated |

Not a very felicitous word but the idea makes sense, so long as it doesn't involve people failing to celebrate the particular festival which may be relevant to them. |

So long as this doesn't get in the way of people feeling free to celebrate whatever is their special feast. |

Those who seek "political correctness" seem to want to cleanse European and American culture of their European and American roots, for fear that the traditions of the majority might be offensive to a minority. I'm all for a diverse culture that celebrates a wide variety of cultural traditions, but I see no need for an "ethnic cleansing" that removes things like Christmas from our culture. That name came about after the Romans decided they'd had enough of the Jews fighting for their freedom, sacked the country, and renamed Provincia Judaea "Provincia Syria Palestina" to try to wash away the connection to the Jews. This was in 135 AD. Then when the Arabs invaded the region, they called it Filasteen (there are no "p's" in Arabic). He probably wouldn't have considered himself a member of any nation, except God's. I also have a problem with some of your other assertions, but there's no need to go into that. |

Anyway Christmas trees are pagan more than they are Christian, and Angels are just as much Jewish and Muslim as they are Christian. Hindu as well for that matter. I suppose that leaves the committed atheists out in th cold, but they can have a happy time feeling above all this seasonal foolishness, and get plastered on New Year's Eve.. |

I mean, look here, haven't we all lived together fairly well (I didn't say completely well, but fairly well) for a while now? When I was a kid I don't recall anyone harping about this stuff. In the 4th grade we had a holiday program, in the Public School, thank you very much, and we had a Christmas part and a Hanukkah part. (In Tennessee in 1977, that was pretty much all there was.) And one could argue, these were educational presentations, and perfectly acceptable in a public school setting. I'm all for everyone displaying the symbols of their holidays. Everyone, from Muslim to Christian to Jew to Whomever. I like learning about what other people do. I too believe we can have some diversity without any ethnic cleansing. We could all be friends if a few of these self-proclaimed "leaders" would just get out of our freakin way and leave us alone. My boss is Jewish. Mister and I went to her home once for Hanukkah dinner. We had a great time. She loves to sing Christmas songs, by the way, simply because she likes music. I sort of like the old Seinfeld idea of "Festivus." Sounds more like a celebration than "Winterval." |
