FSGW Getaway Program

12 Sep 02 - 10:18 PM (#782661)
Subject: FSGW Getaway Program
From: Ferrara

For those who are coming to the Getaway, whether or not you've been before, I'd love to get your input on the program. This year there are four of us working on it: Jeri, Nancy King, Lorraine and myself. (All Mudcatters as it happens... all except Jeri are also from the D.C. area.)

I'll be posting a partial list of sessions in the next few days, but it will ONLY be partial and PRELIMINARY. The Catch-22 about the program, is that people want to know what's planned before they register, but I can't plan sessions until I know who will be here to lead them.

So, do you have any requests? Either for leaders, or for specific topics for workshop sessions? And most of all, do we have any people who would like to try leading or co-leading a workshop?

Here are a few highlights that are already arranged: "An Hour Wasted With Kendall Morse"; Ken Schatz and Barry Finn will be leading Sea Songs and Shanties; we'll definitely have a long session of Gospel and one of Country & Western, just haven't made the necessary phone calls to set up all the leaders.

Sarah Fulton will provide song sheets for some new songs, and other neat stuff from the music tour of Scotland that she took with Ed Miller as tour guide.

Lisa Null will do a vocal clinic. Dennis Cook and Lisa Null will do a workshop on Styles of Harmony. Rick Fielding and Bob Clayton will do a workshop on playing jams and accompaniment.

Dan Schatz is leading a sing-around on Farmers, Field Hands and Fishermen. Dottie Hurley will lead a sing around of Stephen Foster songs. Dick Hamlet and Corinne McWilliams will lead Comic Songs/Humor.

So. This gives a sense of the kind of stuff we will be doing.

There are lots of people (you know who you are) who I might reasonably expect to lead a workshop or sing-around. PLEASE PM or e-mail me, don't make me come out there and get you! I am so absent minded and disorganized that I need all the help I can get with this.

Rita

Rita, I owe you an apology. You sent me an email asking for input and somehow it ended up buried in my email. I apologize for not getting back to you.

I will be in touch in the next few days.

Forgive me?

I can't come, but I can lend 100 copies a recently-created, very-mixed-styles gospel lyrics (100 or so songs ranging from spirituals to bluegrass to blues and black gospel, with classic hymns of all denominations, and so forth)... and one binder full of chords for a good number of them. If they are wanted and if Mmario stops by for them.

Maybe I can do this next year, and lead some spirituals. I found the info on handicap accessibility very helpful, tho if I had known it sooner I'd have kept the date open and the budget stoked for this year. Dang!

How about a session on songs of crime and punishment?

Also, what about a session on soldiers songs or songs to do with war?

I have put in my request for a "Hobo Songs" session led by Captain Morse and the illustrious Mr. Paton. I think they plan something informal with a formal event at NOMAD.

Let's see.... In order....

Mick of course I forgive you, nothing to forgive. As the champion procrastinator-cum-loser-of-important-papers among my acquaintance, I'm not likely to blame other folks for one puny missed e-mail! (I lost ALL my tax info after I filed for an extension.... Imagine the work I had to go thru to get those taxes filed.)

WYSIWYG, and everyone, I would like your comments on the Gospel session. We like it to be very high energy and synergistic, which generally can't happen if people are reading lyrics. So, I had suggested adding a session called "Gospel by the Book," where it would be a sing-together rather than a sing-around. We would still have the regular Gospel session.

Any thoughts?

Tinker, I haven't heard from Max yet. There are various blues sessions being considered. Rick Fielding would like to do a Blues Guitar Styles workshop.

Do you folks think you'd also like a Blues sing-around if we have room?

Crime and Punishment is excellent. Do we have a leader?

Not so sure about soldiers and war unless it's soldiers' gripes, always a good topic, and titled something like "Gee Ma, I Want to Go Home."

... As my sister used to say with respect to the Kerrville Folk Festival, the Getaway is my idea of heaven. I tend to avoid topical sessions because current events are seldom heavenly.

I would like a repeat of the Songs of the Struggle program one of these years, it was magical. Mick? Interested?

Well that covers it for now.

One more thing, I just hate to write it, but in case you haven't read it in the other Getaway thread, the Patons can't come this year.

If you are like me, you will be feeling disbelief and severe disappointment right now. But they are just loaded down with work and can't take the time away. I will miss them so much. In fact it's gotten Bill and me to consider going to NOMAD after all.... SIGH.

Will keep you up to date as the program evolves.

Rita

Rita:

I should have made it clear that I did not mean to suggest a program to glorify War. However, there have been so many good songs written about soldiers and their lives, that I am somewhat surprised to hear you suggest that this kind of music should not be heard at the Getaway.

A.L. Lloyd (Mars for Evermore), Ewan MacColl (The Second Front Song), John Tams (new lyrics to Over the Hills and Far Away), and Peter Bellamy (Kipling poems), to name a few recent illustrious examples, have written or sung or collected songs that dealt with war and soldiers and sailors. Half the Border Ballads have to do with war. There is a rich tradition of songs to do with the U.S. Civil War. Jacobite songs? Don't get me started. Some of these songs deal with the complaints and mistreatment of soldiers. Some don't. Some of them are just songs that are beautiful, moving or simply fun to sing.

I'm not particularly concerned about having a session on soldiers' songs. There will be plenty of opportunity to sing what I want at the non-topical sessions. However, I do think "soldier" is a word you can say in polite company.

Cheers

Edmund

First, I will be happy to lead the songs of struggle workshop, Rita.

Second, I think that a soldiering session is fine. To suggest that songs spawned by struggle don't have a place at the table is an incorrect view. If I use my own ethnicity as a barometer, I would say that one of the most important lessons I have learned from the worldwide Mudcat membership is that there is great music on both sides of every issue. And issues are what spawn a very large portion of "folk" music. I think it wholly appropriate to have a workshop on these songs. As to promoting war mongering, I believe it wholly inappropriate for us, as a group, to decide whose music has validity. What I might consider a fight for freedom, you might consider songs promoting terrorists. To some, Nelson Mandela was a terrorist. But I would happily sing the songs of his movement.

While I have no intention of bring my sound van to the Getaway, if you are having someone do sound, perhaps for the evening program, might I suggest a program on using or getting used to mikes and pick-ups etc. in folk music.

I've done them before, and include tips on doing sound checks, the differences between festival and concert sound, stage prep, preparing sound plots or riders, as well as correctly using monitors, reverb, preventing feedback etc. I dont mind bringing a small amount of specialized gear, mikes, pick-ups, DI's etc, but I would want the amp/mixer and speakers there. I'm coming to relax and not hump speakers around. But if you've already got the basic gear, I can do the class.

Ricocheting off Claymore's (sorry) idea - I don't know if the focus of what you suggest is on sound people or performers. I think an introduction to using sound equipment for musicians who haven't had much experience would be a good thing. A "Meet Mr. Microphone" workshop.

Last year, I was a bit afraid the varying volume of my singing would blow something up. Luckily, I'd had a very small bit of experience with my computer microphones. I don't know if this sort of thing would be possible or not, but if it is, it would be a GREAT opportunity to practice not popping p's, hissing s's or breathing directly into a microphone. Good to see how various factors in singing or playing can come across when using amplification and maybe get some tips on controlling those factors.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've often longed for a chance to experiment with microphones in a non-performance situation. It would be even better to have a knowledgable person explaining stuff. I also wonder if there are any Sound Guys who've found themselves wishing someone had, at some time, explained things to performers. You know - nipped certain bad habits in the bud.

Rita,

Since I don't have PM privledges, and this idea appears to have some backing, please give me a call at your convenience and we can make this happen. (And yes, if they don't have the gear, I will bring whatever is necessary to make it happen. I could even set up a small studio in the small stage they have in the barn next to the cabins, in order to let the folks try out various combinations of sound equipment.

Rita is out for the evening, but she has seen the thread and thinks it it a good idea....we will have to co-ordinate with the people who bring/run our sound system, but it will 'probably' be ok. More soon.....

(current thinking is to run this at an odd time where it doesn't conflict with much·.Sunday morning...or right after supper maybe....thoughts?)

Hey, I'm flexible. If another person can do it, thats great. Or we could split the classes into two, one doing a Basic Sound 101, while the other could give an advanced class, dealing with channel strips, inserts, bussing, returns, patching and the like. If that is the case, then the two classes should be scheduled in sequence so that one could take both classes in order.

But whatever works out is fine.

Boy, I've got to push Bill out from in front of the computer more often so's I can check on this thread I started.... ;-)

Well, I will try to check it every day. There is such good stuff going on here.

**** Soldier Songs ****

Edmund (CET), I was in a hurry to get something written to everyone in my last post, I apologize because I really didn't think through what I said about soldiers' songs. I like soldiers' songs very much in fact, and I also sing many fine songs of war, pretty much in the spirit of what you said in your latest post. Also agree with what Mick said on the subject.

Dick Greenhaus and I sometimes sit around swapping soldier songs because he knows I like 'em and he knows an awful lot of them. And yes, Ewan McColl's Bundook Ballads is one of my favorite song collections as is Kipling's Barrack Room Ballads.... So I apologize for going off half cocked, so's to speak....

So, that said, would you feel that you could lead a Soldier Songs workshop? If you don't want to do it by yourself, maybe someone can co-lead it with you. I think it would be fine.

********* Songs of the Struggle ***

Thanks, Mick, we'll book it.

***** Sound Set-Up ******

Claymore, your workshop on sound set-up would be very welcome. Dennis Cook is doing another workshop this year, I tend to switch things around from year to year. So if there's no problem about the equipment, we'd love to have you do it. I'll double check, but I'll be very surprised if there's any reason you can't use the FSGW sound system.

I will phone you, probably tomorrow (Thursday).

Also I'll try to get a list of our equipment for you, so you can decide whether you want to bring anything else.

****** Using a Mic

Now, is it possible that Claymore or someone else can do at least a half hour or preferably an hour's session on using a mike? That sounds great to me -- I'll be there if we can work it out! It could be done similarly to the vocal clinic, with some instruction and some criticque of victims -- whoops, I mean volunteers -- who are willing to sing in front of the group.

*********

Sandy, all I can say now about NOMAD is that we've asked KW to reserve a hotel room for us with the FSGW crowd, just in case. It's too soon even to know how soon we'll know!

Best wishes to all, Rita

Not a problem on the mic use clinic. I can talk about proximity effect, cardiod, super cardiod and omni response patterns, dynamic and condenser mikes, off axis response, plosives and sibilates, wind screens, doing festival and concert sound checks, the use of various kinds of reverbs and delays, and various handling/plug in noises. Just make sure you don't schedule me in two places at once. Again, whatever works with the other sound guy will work with me.

By the way, I will be in late tonight as I play at a jam at O'Hurleys on Thursday nights and I have sound for the Upper Potomac Dulcimer Fest over this weekend. Monday night at home or at work might be the best. But leave your number and I will call you back.

Well, Claymore and our local sound genius, Dennis Cook, have been in touch. Looks as if Claymore's going to do TWO sound sessions: Performing with a Microphone, and Sound Systems.

Sounds luscious. Now to schedule them so they don't conflict with any of the other sessions I want to attend ... ha-ha.

What I would really like to do is stretch the Getaway over a week, with just one or two sessions going on at any one time, so that at most I would only miss HALF of the workshops I want to get to.

As program chair, naturally I only set up sessions, workshops, sing-arounds, tutorials etc that I think will be interesting and well attended. So, that means that IMHO ALL OF THEM ARE GOOD, and it drives me nuts every year that I can't be at all of them.

Rita
