Help: Amazing Grace/ House of the Rising Sun

About a year ago, I heard a group signing the verses of Amazing Grace to the melody of House of the Rising Sun. I do it in D minor on my autoharp, and it's beautiful. Is it true that this arrangement is older than the more common version of Amazing Grace that we hear today?

AG/HOTRS indeed seems to work. A-Grace is so wonderfully versitile. Other threads have reported, as my daughter learned in her one foray into bible camp, that A-Grace does well with the theme from Gilligan's Island. And you can also do A-Grace to the tune of Take Me Out To The Ball Game (and vice-versa, of course). Others?

I believe the tune family from which that associated with 'House of the rising sun' derives is older then the tune commonly associated with amazing Grace - if that is what you were asking.

But I don't believe that USING 'house of the rising sun' to sing 'Amazing Grace' has *ever* been common.

This sounds like the comedy quiz thing on radio4 where they make the panelists sing the words of one song to the tune of another while the audience falls about laughing. Why would you want to for Petes sake.

Amazing grace sung to 'House of the Rising Sun' is quite beautiful - but when people find out what the tune is normaly associated with many take offense.

There are at least a hundred tunes in the Scottish Psalmody which will fit Amazing Grace.

The metrical Psalms are all either in common metre (EG Psalm 23 "The Lord is My Shepherd") long metre (eg Psalm 100 "All people that on Earth do Dwell") (or short metre( eg Psalm 57)

Common metre is, as one would expect, the most common so any common metre psalm tune will fit Amazing Grace, as the metre is the same as the common metre psalms. The tune Crimond to whuch the 23rd Psalm is usually sung would fit nicely.

I don't remember the Animals doing Amazing Grace, but if they had I'm sure Alan Price would have put a great keyboard solo in the middle.

That group is the 5 BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA. It's a great arrangement, but I don't think that it's a common one.

Two other tunes to which AG can be sung:

The theme to "Green Acres"

"Purple Haze

And, Orac, I can't speak for anyone else, but the reason I would do it is simply to try to have a little fun with a song that is anything but fun in its usual format. Unless, that is, it's being done by a hundred people crammed into a tiny campground bath-house at 2:00 AM. That's fun!

--A guy soloist sang Amazing Grace to organ at my brother's funeral. I thought, how cool, a 60's song by a black female trio. Must have been one of my brother's favorites. He loved female song artists, any color, any size, any religion. My brother knew who they were, what they sang, and in particular how they looked in their stage attire. I knew zip about most female singers, being a girl. The only way I liked to know about them was if I liked to sing their songs. So I liked Edith Piaf, Billy Holiday, and Laura Nero. However, I knew the Animals' 'House of the Rising Sun' well. So I was surprised to find out today that Amazing Grace is listed an old, ...real old,... hymn on a midi website. The generation that first dug 'Amazing Grace' was the generation that first dug (and wrote) the American Constitution. --I don't know if its because my brother died on Sept. 11th, 2002, but life has never been the same since; it's become increasingly 'amazing'. Anyhow, found this on the web earlier today, then chanced upon your thread, and thought this info. might answer or add to some of your questions. --Note: there's an old hymn/folk tune that refers to a rising sun called 'From The Rising Of The Sun', personally, I find it a pretty hip tune. Let's say, it's a tune that could please the ears of many a generation and enjoy many a vibrant variation. Dig? --Q: To those of you on this thread, thanks for inspiring me to share with you all, though this is my first visit to the site. Could you ask your personal muse, why the Amazing Grace thread today? What threads lead you to your jottings on this thread? Are ya maybe gonna toss a thread of golden gospel/folk/historic tune into your own personal music mix? Me? If there's a straw in a haystack, and if I was a writer, I'd as likely be contented with the surprisin' grace one might enjoy while looking for that very unique straw. A writer won't likely be tempted to stop looking for something so important and elusive as a straw in a haystack. ...And that, even whilst all t'others is making merry out the dance floor. --Perhaps I once heard a comedienne share a witticism that a bit of ol' gospel is always good for a revival.

AMAZING GRACE

by John Newton, (1725-1807) American folk melody
fifth verse by John Rees (1828-1900)

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
We will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.

Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come;
'Twas grace that brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

When we've been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise,
Than when we'd first begun,

If the Animals had done a version of 'Amazing Grace', Alan Price would have given himself a composer credit and made a fortune!

WHilst on this thread, what other songs can be sung to different tunes, I know Wild Rover can be sung to almost anything but there must be others such as Pinball Wizard to the tune of the White Cockade

I've heard a shanty group's CD (I believe the Corsairs) on which they had many different versions of Amazing Grace. Only the first verses, but among the versions were: House of the Rising Sun, Gilligan's Island, Scooby Doo, 16 Candles, Dallas, Adams Family, Ode to Joy, Sailor's Prayer, 76 Trombones, and Mingulay Boat Song. By far, the best is the Mingulay Boat Song-it's such a pretty song to begin with. Yes, Amazing Grace is a very versatile song.

My two favorite versions of Amazing Grace are to the theme of the Mickey Mouse Club show, (for you folks of an age or with more cable channels than you know what to do with) and always a crowd pleaser at church youth groups.

The other less likey tune is "Stairway to Heaven" which oddly enough sounds better with different lyrics.

And these all work in reverse, I.e. HOTRS lyrics to AG, or in combination, Stairway to Heaven lyrics to HOTRS tune, etc. So get out the and mix and match.

Hernando's Hideaway works too. Good English Common Meter, every single one.

Don't forget you can reverse the process on any of these. Mickey Mouse words to AG, etc.

I play it in open G tuning on my steel body resonator and it sounds real nice but if ya' ever want to hear it played "balls to the wall" try Mississippi Fred McDowell's version on his reso. Now that guy really sueezed the last drop out...
