I do it in D minor on my autoharp, and it's beautiful. Is it true that this arrangement is older than the more common version of Amazing Grace that we hear today? Wilco in tennessee |

Other threads have reported, as my daughter learned in her one foray into bible camp, that A-Grace does well with the theme from Gilligan's Island. And you can also do A-Grace to the tune of Take Me Out To The Ball Game (and vice-versa, of course). Others? |

But I don't believe that USING 'house of the rising sun' to sing 'Amazing Grace' has *ever* been common. |

The metrical Psalms are all either in common metre (EG Psalm 23 "The Lord is My Shepherd") long metre (eg Psalm 100 "All people that on Earth do Dwell") (or short metre( eg Psalm 57) Common metre is, as one would expect, the most common so any common metre psalm tune will fit Amazing Grace, as the metre is the same as the common metre psalms. The tune Crimond to whuch the 23rd Psalm is usually sung would fit nicely. Murray |

I thought, how cool, a 60's song by a black female trio. Must have been one of my brother's favorites. He loved female song artists, any color, any size, any religion. My brother knew who they were, what they sang, and in particular how they looked in their stage attire. I knew zip about most female singers, being a girl. The only way I liked to know about them was if I liked to sing their songs. So I liked Edith Piaf, Billy Holiday, and Laura Nero. However, I knew the Animals' 'House of the Rising Sun' well. So I was surprised to find out today that Amazing Grace is listed an old, ...real old,... hymn on a midi website. The generation that first dug 'Amazing Grace' was the generation that first dug (and wrote) the American Constitution. --I don't know if its because my brother died on Sept. 11th, 2002, but life has never been the same since; it's become increasingly 'amazing'. Anyhow, found this on the web earlier today, then chanced upon your thread, and thought this info. might answer or add to some of your questions. --Note: there's an old hymn/folk tune that refers to a rising sun called 'From The Rising Of The Sun', personally, I find it a pretty hip tune. Let's say, it's a tune that could please the ears of many a generation and enjoy many a vibrant variation. Only the first verses, but among the versions were: House of the Rising Sun, Gilligan's Island, Scooby Doo, 16 Candles, Dallas, Adams Family, Ode to Joy, Sailor's Prayer, 76 Trombones, and Mingulay Boat Song. By far, the best is the Mingulay Boat Song-it's such a pretty song to begin with. Yes, Amazing Grace is a very versatile song. |

The other less likey tune is "Stairway to Heaven" which oddly enough sounds better with different lyrics. And these all work in reverse, I.e. HOTRS lyrics to AG, or in combination, Stairway to Heaven lyrics to HOTRS tune, etc. So get out the and mix and match. |
