Subject: Songs with Cities or Towns in title?
From: GUEST,Martin S

Just for a bit of fun, I'm putting together a music quiz that needs "familiar" songs with the names of Towns or cities (worldwide) in their title. I'm finding this particularly and surprisingly difficult! EG New York, New York I love Paris in the springtime Liverpool lou

You get the sort of thing? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thank you in anticipation. martin

Greg, you mentioned Himazas - one of my favourites:

(I'm Going Back To) Himazas

I'm going back to Himazas,
Never again to roam.
I'm jogging along,
And humming a song,
"A day's march nearer home",
There's a cottage so neat
At the top of the street
And it's numbered ninety four, so,
I'm going back to Himazas,
Him as 'as the pub next door.

Written by Fred Austin, published 1927.

PS There's also Durham Town, The Rochdale Mashers, What Kind of Fulham I, Meet Me in St Louis, Girl from Ipanema, In the Old Bazaar in Cairo, Margate, and no doubt many, many more.

There was even a song I heard in an old western movie (that I saw on TV in the 1950s) that started out
"I'm ridin' down the trail to Albuquerque,
My saddle bags are filled with beans and jerky." I guess the title was "Albuquerque."

Gotta be some songs with Boston, Cincinnati, Louisville, Albany, Minneapolis, Montreal, Shanghai, Tokyo, Halifax, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Havana,* etc. in the title, eh?

Genie

*Actually, when I first heard the song "Hava Nagila," --many centuries ago -- it was sung by Harry Belafonte, and I thought the song was in Spanish, and I thought the title was "Havana Gila." :-)

Jerry, is that a different song from "A Foggy Day In London Town?"

There's also, "New York, New York, a wonderful town. The Bronx is up and the Battery's down. The people ride in a hole in the ground. ...".

Also, "San Francisco, open your Golden Gate. You make no stranger wait outside your door ...".

There's a singer/songwriter who used to sing in Portland, OR, whose name, I think is Tom something-or-other, and who used to live in Bismarck, ND. He wrote a song called "Bismarck," the chorus of which starts, "Hell, yes, hell, no, It's a rotten hell hole...".

There's also the old song from the civil rights movement of the 1960s,
Oxford Town

and a country song called "Saginaw, Michigan."

Also, I believe the Greek version of the song "Never On Sunday," as sung in the film, is called "Piraeus."

And Miriam Makeba and other sang "Soweto Blues" in the Paul Simon African Concert.

Stick the word "Guelph" in any of these titles for a laugh. It's my favourite city name in Ontario, Canada. My favourite anywhere is Schenectady...it sounds like a sneeze combined with a very uncomfortable contortion of the larynx. NO ONE has written a song with either Guelph or Schenectady in the title for some strange reason...

How about "The Roseville Fair?"

What's the name of that song they play at the beginning of Austin City Limits -- "I want to go back with the armadillo, Good country music and amarillo ..."? Does it have "Austin" in the title?

Another train song that has city names, too, is "The Atcheson, Topeka, and The Santa Fe."

After he did "El Paso," Marty Robbins wrote (?) and sang another song called "El Paso City."

And for Little Hawk, this couplet from George M. Cohan's song "So Long, Mary":

C-flat, I thought Martin was specifically looking for songs with town/city names in the title. If we include all songs that mention a town or city, the list would get very, very long.

A couple that I don't think have been mensioned yet:
Sweet Betsy From Pike
Please Come To Boston
Valencia
Carnival of Venice (not really a "song," though
When Hilo Hattie Does The Hula Hop
Little Old Lady From Pasadena
The Hills Are Bare In Bethlehem
O Little Town Of Bethlemem
Wexford Carol
Coventry Carol

and several that mention Harlem (which is a section of a city, not a city per se), e.g., "Harlem Nocturne." In a similar vein there's "A Rose In Spanish Harlem."

If you're really obsessive you can go to http://www.nima.mil/gns/html/index.html to find zillions of place names from all over the globe. And to go the extra yard you could always search the DT for all place names mentioned and submit the latitude and longitude each place. Surely that's a piece of research that's at least as valuable as the author's attribution. Only jokin'!!

As an aside, an ex-colleague rang a central nessage service chasing the whereabouts of a field technician, to be told by the female operator "He's going to Mt. Charlotte, then going to Mt Mee" (local locations), to which he replied "Well, I hope you enjoy it". He was subsequently sacked.

Here's a small sample of the 22,000 place names for Ireland:

Mount Congreve
Mount Coote
Mount Crawley
Mount Dalton
Mount Dalton Lough
Mount David
Mount Davis
Mount Davis House
Mount Davys House
Mount Desert House
Mount Druid
Mount Druid House
Mount Eagle
Mounteagle
Mounteagle
Mount Eagle Lough
Mountearleret House
Mount Emla
Mount Equity
Mount Erris
Mount Falcon
Mount Falcon
Mountfin House
Mount Florence
Mountforest House
Mount Frisco
Mount Garrett Bridge
Mountgarrett Castle
Mount George
Mount Gunner
Mounthall House
Mount Hayes
Mount Hazel
Mount Heaton
Mount Heaton Lodge
Mount Henry
Mount Hillary
Mounthoward Cross Roads
Mounthussey
Mount Ida
Mount Jennings
Mount John House
Mountjoy
There's surely a mountain of Irish songs that I've never heard.

I've never heard mention of my ancestral home - Ballydorney.

Cheers, John

Of course there's no dearth of what I call "Chamber of Commerce songs".

Minneapolis, Minnesota has a BIG week-long summer festival, called the Aquatennial. Many years ago (40?) and conceivably even today, they had a song which got big play on the local media, called Minneapolis at Aquatennial Time. Not a bad song, actually, considering the drum-beating, sponsored purpose.

OK, time for some insufferable pedantry!

The "anti-war, anti-nuke song in the 1950s/'60's called 'Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Alamagordo, Bikini,'" is "Old Man Atom (Talking Atomic Blues)," recorded by Sam Hinton in 1950.

"Rocky Top" isn't a city or town. "Wish that I was on old Rocky Top, high in the Tennesse hills"

"Deck the Halls with Boston Charlie" is the Pogo Christmas Carol parody by Walt Kelly, "Deck us all with Boston Charlie, Walla Walla, Wash, and Kalamazoo."

"You can't go back to Constantinople," is actually "Istanbul."

JJ, you're not being insufferably pedantic, just correcting some misunderstandings. I had forgotten the actual title of that Sam Hinton song. And I wasn't sure about what Rocky Top was; I think I have some lyrics that erroneously say "...in Rocky Top..." instead of "...on Rocky Top."

Along the same lines, isn't Bikini an atoll instead of a town?

Gorgeous, thanks for mentioning "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav." That's the song sung at the end of "Schindler's List," and it's a beautiful song.

Another town song is (sp?) "Lukenback, Texas."

In Ireland, for every town, village, couple of houses in the middle of nowhere on a bog road, there is some buck eejit writing a song about it. There are some versifiers who couldn't walk past a gap in a hedge without writing thirty stanzas telling you that it's the fairest spot on god's green earth. A brilliant take on this is Brian O'Rourke's song "Drumsnot" but I've no idea where you would get it.

This has probably been mentioned before in this thread, but there's a general feeling in the UK that British place names - in contemporary songs - don't sound quite right, and that their U.S.A counterparts somehow sound more romantic e.g. " Riding a fast train to San Antonio" sounds a lot better than " Riding a fast train to Huddersfield"

This one may be the ultimate. On the CD, Going Back To Brooklyn, Dave Van Ronk sings Garden State Stomp...every word in the song is the name of a town in New Jersey....you can look it up.

"Mer Losse d'r Dom en Kölle" (Cologne Carnival song) and our own McGrath of Harlow's beautiful, "Green Heart of Harlow" spring to mind.
One day someone will write a ditty about Callington in Cornwall. So far no one has been so inspired to my knowledge. They say that it is so dull there that the taxi drivers are safe, because there is nowhere worth driving to in a hurry!

Alanabit. Surely you have not forgotten:

'Twas in Callington town, the bells they did sound
They rang for a hat and a belt laced with gold
But the men of North Lew rang so steady and true
That there never were better in Devon I hold

Mind you Ashwater was the first choice, they only went to Callington as an afterthought

A long time back Greg Stephens mentioned Piddle Trenthyde Jugband -
which Adge Cutler renamed The Charlton Mackerel Jugband - Adge nicked most of Trevor Croziers Dorset songs and relocated them in Somerset , but Adge DID write Pil Pill I love The Still !!
