I recently heard Martin Carthy's cover of Oor hamlet while flying delta into Ireland. As an american, I've got limited access to Martin's stuff and was wondering if there was anywhere online I could download either his or someone else's version of the tune.

You could buy The Carthy Chronicles...

The tune is essentially a slowed-down version of a well-known traditional reel "The Mason's Apron". You should be able to find this in many a Scottish book of tunes or in one of the many abc.notation tunebooks on the web. The author of the song incidentally is Adam McNaughtan and he sings on his album "wordswordswords"

Email me: edpellow(at)ntlworld.com and I'll send you a copy.

The file is too big for hotmail mind, so I'll need a different (better) address.

You can get Martin Carthy recordings in the States (at Andy's Front Hall, for instance), but you'd have to get the "Chronicles" set, which, although worthwhile, is a chunk of money if you want just one song. John Roberts also does "Our Hamlet" (Carthy's anglicised version of "Oor Hamlet") on "A Present From the Gentlemen", which you'll find at Andy's (under John Roberts & Tony Barrand), or you can get it direct from Golden Hind Music.

You can get both Adam McNaughtan's own recording (on WordsWordsWords, which has been reissued on CD, I believe) and Iain MacKintosh's (a great version, from the LP Standing Room Only) from Greentrax.

If you go to Mike Agranoff's site you can find an MP3 of Oor Hamlet by clicking on the "Recordings" button and scrolling down.

www.johnwesleyharding.com offers an "MPFree" of Wes's version. Slight lyrical deviation, but lots of fun.
