It would have been the summer of '68, and Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks shared the bill in Tampa, FL with Cheech and Chong!!!!!! Damn, I'm gettin old! |

28 Feb 03 - 04:52 AM (#900351) Subject: RE: Help: Dan Hicks- what's he up to From: GUEST,John the bass player Dan is still active. He's been recording albums on Surfdog Records (a studio recording with a number of famous guest artists, a live album and I think he's working on another record now). He put the Hot Licks together again and has been touring for the past several years. None of the original people in the band but the same instrumentation and the same approach. Both some old tunes, and new tunes he's written as well. I toured with the band for most of 2001, mostly either small clubs or large concert settings. Dan puts on a good show and always gets a great response. |

I've never seen him perform, but he frequently has gigs at the Palms Playhouse in Davis, California, not far from me. He's here so often I thought he must be from Northern California. I guess he is - at least he has a post office box in Mill Valley in Marin County - just north of San Francisco. -Joe Offer |

Dan turned it around about 16 years ago when he went on the wagon. Wherever he plays, you should not miss the opportunuity tio see him play. Love ya' Dan, you crazy, crazy cat. Yours, as ever, minnesinger5 |

The last time I saw him, years ago, he was solo and looked like he was drunk or at least seriously hung over... very disappointing. I'm glad to hear he has sobered up and is working again. |

13 Apr 03 - 07:28 AM (#932284) Subject: RE: Help: Dan Hicks- what's he up to From: Larkin I've just got his last but one album from SurfDog records- Beatin' the Heat. It is wonderful and I am playing it constantly. Fine tracks with Bette Midler, Rikki Lee Jones, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits and includes a very different although still brilliant version of my fave Hicks tune , I Scare Myself. Buy it you'll not regret it . Martin |
