Anyone who knows the lyrics of a song called Molly lovely Molly, that I once heard Emily Smith sing. First line - as I recall it - says "I once was a ploughboy", and the lines "the mavis and the turtledoves and the nightingale sing" end two verses.

I thought it was on here somewhere already but couldn't find it, so here it is. I learned this version from a Lizzie Higgins recording. I hope it's what you are looking for.

I once was a ploughboy but a soldier am now
I hae coorted wi' Lovely Molly as I followed the plough
I hae coorted wi' Lovely Molly frae the age o' sixteen
But now I must leave her and serve James my King

O Molly, Lovely Molly, despite all your charms
There is mony's the night you hae laid in my arms
And if ever I return again it will be in the Spring
Where the mavis and the turtle dove and the nightingales sing

You may go to the mercat, you may go to the fair
You may go to kirk on Sunday and meet your new love there
But if anybody loves you half as much as I do
Then I won't stop your marriage. Farewell love, adieu.

O Molly, Lovely Molly, despite all your charms
There is mony's the night you hae laid in my arms
And if ever I return again it will be in the Spring
Where the mavis and the turtle dove and the nightingales sing

O Molly, Lovely Molly, despite all your charms

I have this song on a recording by singing group Stravaig, there they sing:
O Molly, Lovely Molly, I delight in your charms

It's a cracker of a song...
I thought it'd be in the DT too, but I couldn't find it...

Cheers

Steven

Well, it took forever to find (doesn't seem to have been indexed by the search engine yet) but here is the discussion from May of last year which contains the text of Lizzie Higgins' version of the song, together with some background:

Help: Lovely Molly - provenance?

Thank you - Drumshanty, Scabby Doug and Malcolm. It is the song!
I managed to get most of the lyrics by listening to a Emely Smith recording of the song - but a few words I couldn't guess, and they are not in my word book. Off course you can sing the sounds you hear - only a very few Danes would notice, if it is wrong - but I prefere to understand what I'm singing.
